there are lots of different kinds batter and zach, which one is your favourite?^q ^
“Jokers, mostly” Batter replied, something shining in his eyes as he spoke- he seemed to be very much interested in getting somewhere that he could spend his credits. “That and a new bag; mine is falling apart… Luck and fortune tickets, meats, simple things.” He nodded again, and kept his wits about him despite his shift in demeanor.
He didn’t move from where he stood though; it was clear that despite Isaac’s companions didn’t trust him, and he wanted to be sure that he didn’t come off as aggressive.
Isaac nodded, pulling a notepad out of his inventory, along with a pen, as he began to write something down, mumbling to himself, before looking up again.
“Do you know how many Jokers you might need? We have a lot, but the others get mad when I don’t write down how many are bought and things like that. The boys’ll be excited to have a customer besides myself and the other guardians…” As he spoke, he’d occasionally look back at Valerie and Amaranta, both of whom seemed on edge, despite Isaac’s own calmer demeanor.
Batter hesitated. He was really bad with the math of it all; he had no idea how many he would need for the things he had to do... He shifted his weight from side to side for a moment before settling on a number.
“At least 250,” he replied after much pause. “I’m... doing something.” He didn’t much want to talk about it yet; he didn’t know how the others would respond to his current course of action.
Batter kept his hands firmly in the air, not making any movements that might be seen as aggressive. He carefully examined the scene before him; he’d seen that cat before somewhere… he blinked as it dawned on him; that was a Valerie.
“I know, I know.” He replied, still calm. “I won’t try to justify my actions in the past. There’s nothing to be done there, the judgement has long since been passed. I’m seeking redemption. That’s all I’m doing here. I’ll clear out if you need.”
He may have leaned into ‘judgement’ a little more than subtly. He was a man who loved symbolism, even if it was stupid.
Before Amaranta could say anything else, Isaac nudged her to the side so he could stand by her. He shook his head, as he pats Valerie. This was ridiculous, how aggressive the two were being.
“It’s alright. I’m sorry for my companions’ behavior. If it is redemption you seek, then there will be no hostility amongst us.” He gave his companions a side-glare as he examined the Batter’s bag. “That is quite a surplus of credits you have there, friend.”
Batter slowly lowered his hands and nodded, still keeping his bat held awkwardly in his lesser hand; still showing he was no threat unless directly provoked.
“No need for apologies,” Batter said, keeping his head down. “Their responses are justified completely. I do appreciate it though.”
He glanced at his bag over his shoulder and chuckled softly. “Yes… I’ve been out of my file quite some time, and it’s been a while since I’ve had a place to spend. Which is a shame; I need a few things.”
Isaac nodded as he listened. He wasn’t well-versed when it came to Batters, but he wouldn’t let his companions’ hostility go unchecked while he was here. Upon the Batter’s mention of needing things, Isaac perked up… as much as one in his position could.
“Ah! What are you in need of? I’m certain it wouldn’t be much of a hassle back in our Zone!”
When Amaranta tried to express her dislike of the idea, she shrunk back at Isaac’s glare, a ‘My world, my rules.’ type of look, before he turned back to the Batter.

Batter sighed and looked over his bag; The damn thing was falling apart at the seams, both from natural wear and tear and from the fact that he’s had it overstuffed completely. The last time he made any major purchases was over three years ago; and the credits piled up from the specters he fought in the other files. He figured it was about time to get something new, but he wasn’t sure what kind of bag he’d like. He also wasn’t sure this bag would hold up long enough for him to make that decision. He sighed disgruntledly and laid back on the ground, looking up at the smokey sky.
Amaranta lightly shoved Isaac as they stepped out of the entrance of the file, as they joked and laughed, with Valerie settled around her neck. Isaac had insisted on visiting other files, ever since encountering that other Judge. She refused to let him go alone, and had chosen Valerie to accompany them.
They stopped for just a moment, as Isaac doubled over into a coughing fit. She knew that he wasn’t used to the smoke like she and Valerie were, so she chose to let him adjust before they continued, her hand resting on her sword as she watched the area. It felt… off compared to most Zones she wandered off to. Then she realized why - she could feel a Batter’s presence once more. She hadn’t felt the presence of one since she removed herself from the Puppeteer data all that time before. She wouldn’t alert the others to who specifically it was, but she’d let the other person know she was there.
Leaving Valerie and Isaac for just a moment, she stepped out just a bit further, and called out into the Zone, “I know that someone else is here! Show yourself before I find you.”
Batter had grown complacent when it came to knowing when people were or weren’t somewhere around. Had this happened a few years prior, he would have known someone was watching, and been prepared. Probably on the offensive. But as it stood, the voice surprised him.
He knew that voice commanded authority though; and he wasn’t in the position to fight anyone particularly powerful. He put his bag over his shoulder and stood, slowly. He held his bat in his clearly non-dominant hand to indicate he wasn’t a threat while also remaining armed if need be, and put his hands up when he found the source of the voice.
“It’s alright,” he spoke, gently and without agitation. “I’m not a threat, I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
Once Amaranta and Valerie saw the Batter, both chose to take up a position in front of Isaac, like a barrier. “That’s what you Batters all say, but look what happens when we believe you.”
Isaac frowned, trying to nudge Amaranta out of the way, as if to get a better look at the Batter. He looked just as sickly as Hugo did, but he didn’t seem afraid of the Batter. He didn’t exactly understand the former Puppeteer’s anger, but at the same time, he couldn’t dismiss how angry she sounded.
Batter kept his hands firmly in the air, not making any movements that might be seen as aggressive. He carefully examined the scene before him; he’d seen that cat before somewhere... he blinked as it dawned on him; that was a Valerie.
