Tips for baking with arthritis and other hand-related chronic pain

With some changes to techniques, a careful selection of kitchen tools, and tips from fellow bakers, the joy of baking can live on.

I luckily haven't had to deal with much chronic pain or hand pain yet, especially with regards to baking (crochet is another story). That said, these look like some pretty solid tips! There's also some in the comments section.

As this link nears five hundred notes, I'm just... very quietly touched at how many people are sharing it. Whether they need it themselves (or think they will someday), or know someone else who might need it, the fact that all of them are sharing the sentiment of "I want the people who love doing this thing to be able to keep doing the thing that they love" is... yeah. mutual aid los angeles (MALA) has put together a spreadsheet with valuable resources for people affected by the ongoing los angeles wildfires and wind storm. the sheet is constantly being updated with resources such as shelter info, animal boarding info, addresses for distribution centers, volunteer opportunities and so much more.

For anyone looking to donate, as well as the spreadsheet, here's a short list from 'Today' NBC site (Jan. 8th 2025) -

California Community Foundation: Its Wildfire Recovery Fund supports both intermediate and long-term relief in underserved areas.

California Fire Foundation: Provides support to families of firefighters.

LA Fire Department Foundation: The LAFD Wildfire Emergency Fund provides current Los Angeles Fire Department workers with equipment and supplies.

Pasadena Humane Society: Helps with pet evacuations in the Los Angeles area.

Ventura County Community Foundation: Its Wildfire Relief & Recovery Fund provides immediate funding for those in most urgent need.

American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles:Provides shelter, food, water, health and mental health services for those who need to evacuate immediately.

Center for Disaster Philanthropy: Its California Wildfires Recovery Fund helps communities rebuild after the fires.

Direct Relief: Delivers medical aid to first responders battling the fires as well as displaced residents.

World Central Kitchen: Distributes food and water to first responders and residents.

hey so Los Angeles is in crisis right now.

Multiple concurrent wildfires are happening, two of which are extremely devastating. The Palisades Fire, which at this time is the deadliest wildfire in LA history, has burned 18 square miles worth of land and destroyed over 1,000 structures. The Eaton Fire has burned over 10,000 acres. And the Santa Ana winds are rapidly escalating the fires to where containment at this time is borderline nonexistent and firefighters are at a loss for what to do. People have died. The air is extremely hard to breathe from smoke. Elderly, disabled and transient populations are at great risk. Even 20 miles south and 30 miles west of the Palisades and Eaton Fires, the smoke is so bad that there are air quality alerts and the moon is red at night. These have been called “catastrophic urban firestorms” and the people affected need your compassion.

If you are directly affected by the Eaton or Palisades Fires, here is a list of safe evacuation centers:

So, an update -

I haven't posted much lately here, on AO3, or Twitter (although Twitter is just not as fun as it was, but hey, it's there), because I've been dealing with a lot lately personally, and it's really taken a toll on my mental health. My personal time took a bit of a hit as I was dealing with other things, and then whenever I had a few minutes to work on editing, writing, posting, reading, etc., I would often end up just staring at the screen in a brain fog only to crash and wake up realizing that I fell asleep without really accomplishing anything.

I am absolutely committed to finishing projects, and I apologize for the delays. I'm working on myself too, I am safe and I have personal support as well.
