Let’s be real...one of the hardest lessons in walking with God is laying down our desires when they don’t align with His will. It feels like a tug-of-war between what I want and what He knows I need.
But here’s the deep truth...
Desiring anything other than what God wants for us isn't just disobedience...it’s misalignment with the very heartbeat of our Creator.
It Starts With Desire…
Desires aren’t inherently bad. God gave us the ability to want, to long, to dream. The danger comes when:
We cling to those desires more than we cling to Him.
We define our identity by what we want, instead of who He says we are.
We pursue things that soothe our soul temporarily but leave our spirit starved.
You can’t want what God doesn’t want for you and expect to live in peace. That’s like asking the ocean to calm down while you’re busy stirring up the storm.
The Illusion of "Good"
Sometimes the things we desire look good:
That relationship? Charming, but not God-ordained.
That opportunity? Glittering, but not graced.
That dream? Big, but birthed in ambition, not obedience.
The enemy doesn’t always show up in red horns 👹 Sometimes he looks like open doors that God never unlocked.
Just because it doesn’t look sinful doesn’t mean it’s sanctified.
The Danger of Delay...
When we hold on to what we want, we delay what He wants to give:
We trade eternal fruit for temporary satisfaction.
We delay healing because we’re holding on to the wound.
We delay the promise because we won’t surrender the plan.
God’s desires for you are not just better…they’re holy, healing, and eternally anchored. But He won’t compete with your idols. If you want His best, you have to let go of your version of “good.”
Why Do We Cling to What He’s Not In?
Let’s be honest. It’s fear. Fear that:
His plan won’t feel as good as ours.
His timing will take too long.
His way will be harder.
But faith doesn’t demand full understanding. It requires full surrender.
And child… surrender is where the glory shows up. 🙌🏼✨️
The Garden Still Speaks...
Let’s go back to Eden for a second.
God gave Adam and Eve everything. But the enemy distorted their desire until they thought what God had withheld was better than what He had freely given.
Sound familiar?
That’s what the enemy still does...twists the truth until we question God's goodness and chase what He’s told us to leave alone.
He’s still whispering, “Did God really say…?”
And the Spirit is still pleading, “Trust Me.”
The Gut-Punch Reflection:
Ask yourself...
Would I still want it if God said “No” forever?
Am I more in love with the dream or the Dream Giver?
Do I crave comfort more than I crave His presence?
A Holy Reframe:
We must stop measuring our spiritual growth by what we gain, and start measuring it by what we’re willing to surrender.
That’s when we grow up in the Spirit.
Prayer 🙏
Lord, crucify every desire in me that wars against Your will. Strip away every illusion of “good” that keeps me from Your best. Purge the idols, expose the compromise, and align my heart with Heaven’s blueprint. I don't want anything You didn’t plant. Burn it down, Lord. Plant what will bear eternal fruit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
TammyS.
