once you notice half of all memes are just a picture of a black person with unrelated text over them you really cannot unsee it
this is actually horrific right? we can all agree about that?
I'd never thought I needed to be paranoid about the fact that photos I share on social media might be turned into memes in a discord run by JuicyBigNut but that's what existing in a public space as a black person is like! not to mention the fact that they don't even know who the man in the picture, yet we know who first spread it and no one has beaten that guy to death yet
videos too. videos of black ppl just speaking with an accent in their normal lives is seen as unserious and comedic. Even little black children are made fun of this way.
it's especially jarring when you're surrounded by AAVE in ur daily life but go on social media to see a video of a black mom talking to her child in AAVE and they're labeled as wild, hilarious, ratchet, ghetto, and the comedy is not found in what's happening but the fact it's happening with black people & AAVE. their life is treated as a minstrel show to white audiences. but to me that's just how ppl talk around here so idk what's so funny.
the way black ppl's movements and speech are made into a joke (or meme) & used as a punchline followed by a laugh track (peak 2000s Disney Channel but also just EVERYWHERE) is so disturbing.
when you see a meme with a black person in it, ask yourself WHY you find it so funny. Is it because of how they're moving or speaking? Is it the accent? Is it because they're so "ghetto/ratchet"? is there even a joke or is the joke blackness?
im glad we're mostly out of the "girls are so soft uwu" era. it was really hard for me to go through as a girl with a segmented carapace covered in hundreds of tiny barbs
im fucking crying
