Part 17 in my weekly poster series of 2025
I’ve been working through some feelings lately.
So many baby punks obsessed with how to be punk "correctly" and how to not be called a poser and lame.
Kid let me tell you, you are missing the point. You're still conforming. Just to a different standard. Shake that off, you're free now, you can do whatever the fuck you want. To be punk is to not give a fuck what others think of you and care for your community, and when you do that, it doesn't matter what ratio of political to band patches you have on your battle jacket, punk will recognize punk, and you will belong. There's no point in trying to suck up to elitists. Even when (if) they will accept you you will just be miserable, if it's at the cost of your authenticity (also they are the most insecure and uninspiring people I have ever met and I geniuenely do not reccomend trying to befriend them).
No need to obsess with what's the proper way to do stuff and how much you should care about what, and no need to preach about these approximations on the internet, trust me. Tiktok punk discourse is a thrice removed cousin to punk culture. I feel like some of you are more interested in the idea of being percived as punk more than actually being punk. Once you focus on what you like doing and making, and how you are helping your community you become authentically cool. Coolness isn't derived from what you like to do, but rather how commited you are to it. A guy who knows everything about every tram model is always cooler than some douche who claims he's a skater but you've never seen him at a skate park. Just do what feels right for you. Being labeled as "punk" isn't adding nor subtracting value from you. You aren't a better version of yourself cause you can call yourself punk. It's not a magic word that makes you more valueable. The value comes from being punk, not just being percived as one.
There are defenietly wrong ways to be punk, but there isn't One Right One, and if you've never set a foot in a squat, a punk venue and a protest (all three.), delete every post you made about "how to be punk", cause with all due respect you don't know shit and are annoying. Nothing wrong with being new to the scene but recognize that you are new, recognize that there's things you don't know the history of, and don't be afraid to admit to not knowing stuff.
And never miss a good chance to shut the hell up.
