“And you’re still ignoring your sister, which I got the entire story about before I had you call her. You haven’t asked a single thing about why I haven’t spoken to my parents, or about anything in my past actually. You said “That’s a good idea”, and then laughed. Yeah, really important!” Jess sat back on the couch, arms crossed over her chest.

"I don't mean to ignore anyone. And that's what I wanted to spend today about. I wanted to talk some more, too. After we talked outside? That's what spending time together today would be about," Kyle said. "I didn't mean for it to sound like it wasn't true. The chuckle just came out as a happy reflex," he said, standing by the couch.

“Why are you laughing and saying that’s a good idea? This is important. You’re not really paying attention to a thing I say, you’re not paying attention to your sister. What will you actually pay attention to?” Jess walked back to the living room. “Yeah, movie, whatever…”

“I’m just happy, thinking about it. It’s another step, that things are progressing. I’m trying to be supportive. I know it’s important.” Kyle said walking after her. “And I agreed. I am paying attention...” he pursed his lips together.

“Probably not, but I have to call my parents sometime.” Jess let him go for a second, watching Delilah’s eyes go wide, but the girl said nothing, just smiled. “Well, to quote ‘The Cutting Edge’, and D.B. Sweeney as Doug Dorsey…Just remember who said it first.” Jess’ arms found their way around Kyle’s neck, and she nodded. “Yeah. I totally approve.” She kissed him back, soft, and slow, smiling as it ended. “So what do we do now?”

Kyle nodded. “That’s a good idea,” he said, chuckling with a hum. “Yep...” he winked and grinned some more, holding Jessie by the hips as they kissed, nipping gently at her lips in a playful manner. “We can watch a movie... cuddle a little. Distract ourselves from everything else that’s happening,” Kyle grinned at her.

“Cool? How do you think he’ll react to finding out I’m getting married, when neither of my parents even knew that I was dating you? If you could call it dating.” Jess got up and went back to the kitchen, leaving her coffee, and her phone on the counter as she wrapped Kyle in a hug from behind. “I love you. I find domestic men very sexy.” She grinned.

Kyle licked over his lips. "Not all too well, probably," he said and then chuckled. "We were 'officially' dating for less than a day before you asked me to marry you for real," he smiled. Kyle looked over his shoulder and grinned as he wiped the water off his coffee mug. He set it down and turned around. "I love you too. Yeah? I'm glad you approve," he kissed her softly.

“Sorry…birthday party. I’m a little scatter brained here.” Jess looked up when Kyle sat next to her, her thumb still scrolling the number up and down on her phone screen. “Hey, go finish your breakfast, I’m fine. I was just thinking about calling my dad, that’s all.”

Kyle kissed her cheek as she responded. "Oh," he nodded. "Okay, that sounds cool," he smiled, then returned to finish up his food. When he had eaten what was on his plate, he brought the dishes to the sink, and with his sister's help, started to wash them.

“I guess…” Jess said, pulling her phone from her pocket, and sitting on the couch with her coffee. “I never saw green people…” She spoke absentmindedly, scrolling and stopping, scrolling and stopping, always on the same number, never taking her eyes from it. “Sounds like you had fun that Halloween.” Her own voice sounded so far away, it was as if it wasn’t even hers.

"I don't remember. They weren't a big part in the film," Kyle said, looking at his plate. He turned and looked at her. "Birthday party, but yeah, it was something... What's wrong?" Kyle frowned. He got up from the kitchen to sit next to her.

“Sorry if I haven’t found favor with L. Frank Baum. And what the hell is a Winkie?” Jess just shook her head, she wasn’t about to ask about the Wicked part, but……”Glinda? You’ve got to be kidding me. And are you really gonna destroy my eggs with ketchup?” She made a face, and her stomach churned a little as she carried her coffee into the living room.

“Everyone has their tastes,” Kyle smiled. “They’re the creatures that live in their own country part of OZ. I think they were green in the movie or something,” he said. “It was a costume party and she wanted me to match up with her. Just one time, since no one else had seen it. Our grandpa was the Wizard. He was pretty good at it, too,” he hummed. “I really like ketchup,” he said quietly, taking the bottle out.

“I am so not Dorothy, Dorothy was stupid. ‘Yeah, I’m in this beautiful, colorful land where I can have anything I want. And what I want is to go back to the black and white dust bowl, with an aunt and uncle that yell at me all the time, and a woman who wants to kill my dog’. I DON’T THINK SO!” Delilah was giggling at her as they walked in, nodding her head in agreement, while Jessie reluctantly let go of Kyle, and went about the chemistry of making herself another cup of coffee. “I’ve always hated that movie.” Lilah piped up. “The Munchkins are creepier than the flying monkeys!” Jess laughed at that one, then looked to Kyle. “Sweetheart, scrambled eggs are really easy,” She smiled, “but thank you.”

“There’s that... But the books had a lot more adventure than the movie,” Kyle smiled. “Still, I would have loved to stay or at least come back to the colorful land and seen everything. And the Winkies are actually yellow,” he said and chuckled. He looked at his sister with a sideways grin. “Yet, you always listened to Wicked around me,” he bumped her playfully, and she bumped him back. “I still can’t believe you actually dressed up as Glinda for my birthday,” she giggled. Kyle laughed and rolled his eyes. “Yeah, there’s that, too. I can’t believe it either.” He turned his head back to Jessie. “I know. I guess I’m just really hungry. Do we have any ketchup?” he asked, then hopped off the stool to look into the fridge.

“You could never be cliche, because I’m pretty sure I’ve said the same thing about you.” Jess smiled sweetly at Kyle’s revelation. “You never told me that…but I was kind of hoping. Remember what I said last night: everything that’s happened to us, has happened exactly as it was supposed to to get us to this place. We’re closer, and stronger because of how we started.” She took his hand, but then changed her mind and wrapped her arms around him tight, breathing him in. “We’re gonna make it.” She whispered, taking his hand again and following him inside.

“Like Dorothy entering OZ,” Kyle said and smiled back. “I agree. We’re doing pretty great, and we’ve made it this far,” he said, holding her close to him and kissing her head gently. He loved where they were right now, and decided not to focus on what could have been, because he couldn’t change that. “Yes we are,” he beamed, leading them back into the house and to the kitchen. Kyle cut up some of his toast and took a bite. “This is yummy.”

“Well, you don’t have to be the big shot tough guy around me, you know that.” Jess nodded, smiling with him. “I do. And I never thought I’d love again. Are you saying that it started with the letters? Because during our first face to face, I was just a girl from a few letters, and they didn’t mean anything, remember?” She got to her feet, but shook her head. “I only made enough for you and Lilah, I’m not really hungry.”

Kyle pressed his lips to hers. “I like being ‘just Kyle’ around you,” he said. “It’s been a while since I’ve felt like I really had something to make it feel like I’m doing something right. Probably sounds a little cliche, but in a world of black and white, you brought color in,” he said. “You were something. I didn’t know what, but we had a connection. I don’t know if I told you this, but if the accident hadn’t happened, I probably would have asked you out right away,” he nodded. “I wouldn’t have tried to detach.” Kyle nodded again and offered her his hand. “Let’s go inside and rule the day.”

“I know. On both counts.” Jess said softly, laying her head on Kyle’s shoulder as he sat with her. “And I know that you don’t need me mother hen-ing you all the time, and I won’t. Just for now, okay?” She sighed, taking another sip from her mug, and thinking. “If I didn’t need to keep my eye on you, that bartender would’ve been two grapes shy of a fruit basket…if you know what I mean.” She mustered a little laugh, and closed her eyes as Kyle kissed away her tears. “I was hardly ever emotional until I met you, now I cry at the drop of a hat. It’s kind of pathetic. I love you too, and you should probably go eat your breakfast before it gets cold.”

Kyle wrapped his arm around her tighter. “I probably need right now it more than I’d care to admit. You know, the big shot tough guy thing,” he smiled, and chuckled softly, feeling better as he kissed over her face. “I guess that’s just because you love me so much,” he grinned. “But it’s not pathetic. It’s rather sweet. And it means that you care a lot. Before those letters, I was the ‘no-nonsense, need nobody’ type,” Kyle said, and nodded, getting up carefully and helping Jessie with him. “Good plan, let’s go eat.”

Jess turned around when she heard the door open, seeing the look on Kyle’s face. “You’re not an idiot, please don’t say that. You’re just not used to being worried about. I admit it hurt to be pushed away in there…” She took a sip of her coffee with trembling hands. “I won’t apologize for worrying, and wanting to take care of you.” Her voice was shaking, and she was starting to tear up.

“I blame myself for this…for what happened to you…for the negativity… Nothing you can say will change that, so please don’t try. I just want to stay close to you until it’s all out of your system, and we know what it was. I need that.” Jessie didn’t even notice that she’d started crying while she was talking, and she took a seat on the front steps, hands firmly clasped around her coffee mug. “If it’s selfish to need that, then I’ll take that title. You’re not alone anymore, and you’ll never be alone again. I know you’d feel the same way, and want the same thing, if this situation were reversed.”

“I didn’t mean to hurt you,” Kyle said and stood with her, putting his hand on her back. He kissed her cheek gently, just watching carefully as she spoke. “I know. And no, you don’t have to apologize for caring. I should be the one to apologize for not letting you. And I really am sorry,” he smiled warmly. There was no reason to argue about it anymore. He just listened to her and nodded, sitting down as well as she did.

Kyle wrapped his arms around her, scooting a little closer when he saw the tears in her eyes. “I have you, and I’m really grateful for that. And you have me too,” he said. “And you’re right. I would want the same thing, because if anyone ever hurt you, they’ll regret it. I love that you want to take care of me, and it means a lot,” he said, gently kissing away her tears. “I love you so much, Jess.”

“You didn’t have to. And there are much more important things than you in this world. I don’t want to be your company.” Jess put the butter in the middle of the table, added two pieces of toast on each plate, and gave Kyle a weak salute. “Perfect Army fiancee at your service, and now I’m done here.” She nodded, and picked up her coffee, taking it out onto the front porch.

Kyle frowned a little. He made his way after her, opening the front door to the porch. "Hey..." He said quietly. "I'm an idiot, I know," Kyle nodded. "And we still have a lot to talk about. And we can have that movie marathon we were planning. Guess the negativity of the moment got the best of me," he smiled softly. "Until that hospital visit, recovery was always a one-man-band affair,"

“Whatever.” Jessie retorted, splitting the eggs between two plates, setting them in front of Kyle, and Delilah, and starting on the toast. Did he realize what he just did? “No. I’m sure I can go block a scene for Wes, or take an extra shift at work. I certainly don’t need to stay here, nor do I want to.”

"I didn't say I didn't want you to stay. It's just going to be boring with me here with not much to do, and if there was some stuff that needed to be taken care of..." Kyle said, looking down at his hands, now in his lap. "But the company would be nice too," he said quietly. It had just been something he had been used to for years, and he had realized it would apply differently right now. "Sorry,"

“Actually, I didn’t mean it that way. I just meant you need more sleep, and you know it. Eyebrow down, Mister. You wouldn’t have enough energy.” Jess had already whisked the eggs, and was now stabbing at them in the pan with a spatula, then suddenly reached over and took Kyle’s Monster away. “No twitchy. And out? Did you hit your head and suddenly forget you were drugged last night?”

"I need sleep to be able to get up again later. Got to move around a bit. You know I don't like being kept in one place for a long time," Kyle said, stretching his arms I've his head. "No, I didn't. So that means you're staying here with me, then? The whole day?" He asked, humming, before getting up to get himself a glass of water.
