You ever think about just how neglected Charlie was, and still is? His only parent was mentally unstable and hardly able to take care of herself, let alone a kid. He basically raised himself. He somehow made it to adulthood without anyone caring about him enough to teach him to read, or figure out why he couldn't. Now he keeps the bar running because he's the only one who truly understands that the dirty work needs to get done, because he's been the one doing that dirty work for as long as he can remember. So as an adult he moves through life with an old man's level of hands-on experience and a toddler's understanding of any knowledge that must be taught by someone else. Because there's never been someone else. He still walks around with his jacket sleeves unbuttoned like a little kid and none of his closest friends ever offer to do it for him. The others were abused in all kinds of ways but Charlie was just downright abandoned
