was talking to a friend today and i was talking about my oc, and specifically her relation with pyro, which led to a conversation about JUST pyro because we love pyro. heres some headcanons that i back up with in game lore.
cut below cuz its a lot. im feeding pyro nation today.
- LOOKS -
First for looks, as lighthearted as tf2 is, i think SOMETHING must've happened to pyro to be what they are. I think pyro is human. it wouldn't be completely insane to think pyro isnt human giving merasmus and various mystical magical things goin on in tf2, but i like the idea ore that pyro was a human.
pyro is def chubby no debate on that. probably fairly muscular from holding not only a flamethrower, but an axe and a fuel tank. bros gotta have GUNS to carry all that.
i think pyro was in some kind of tragic accident. i think hes burnt beyond recognition and abandoned his old identity because of it.
- I really have no opinion about pyros gender. dude or chick i think bro has been in pyroland for so long that he doesn't have perception of their own. i like the idea that pyro could be a woman, because sniper makes comments when he dominates pyro in game implying he thinks pyros a lady. idk. im bi and cant choose. i don't think pyro would care for things like pronouns. i think everyones used to calling pyro he and using masculine terms, so i do to usually. but i think its so cute when people make fem pyro art. i love fem pyro sm. (im also a huge fan of fem characters that are androgynous or people mistake for a man. so tuff.)
- though pyro does do things in emotes and in Meet The Pyro that can be interpreted as "feminine", thats not why i suspect pyro could be a girl. i think pyro is just joyous and expressive and tends to do silly stuff for comedic affect. he has no urge to be tough or to be perceived as such. or to be perceived at all?
- PYROVISION -
- PYROVISION LETS TALK ABOUT IT. i have two ideas on how pyro may have ended up with pyrovision.
1.) he just showed up the job interview lookin' like that, which would be funny. (though most likely with a different outfit, same mask.)
2.) someone (maybe engie) had made the mask specifically FOR pyro.
i think the first idea is more fitting for tf2, but i like to think that because pyro is just genuinely hideous underneath the mask, the administrator was like "yoo you gotta cover that up gng 💔"
- HERES THE THING. i saw another post abt this on here before from someone i cant remember. but it was about how in the game, pyrovision goggles exist. on pyros mask, it does say "optical mask."

- so, the mask almost DEFENITELY MAKES HIM SEE PYROLAND. i think it's a way for pyro to cope with being terribly disfigured. In game, it makes everything much brighter, and also changes the text and certain accents in the map.
- i know in Meet The Pyro, pyro sees everything as super sugary and unrealistic, but in game its different (for gameplay and hitbox reasons obvi). Idk. gotta use my imagination here. i think pyro sees teammates normally, but his teammates as little babies. if his teammates were little babies, he'd try to play and entertain them aswell, which means he would be killing them in reality. which, you cant team kill. thats not something the administrator would want. obvi.
- pyro probably has perception of reality to a certain degree. he can probably understand that he's in tuefort, not some random magical fairyland. however, i think theres degrees to it. calmer moments just reading magazines at base? he can probably understand where he is, whats going on, and be (mostly) in reality. if there setting all of tuefort on fire, then reality becomes more warped and structures and surroundings aren't what they usually are.
- COMMUNICATION -
- I think pyro has his own language. we know that pyro can read english, and understand it. In Meet The Medic, we see pyro playing with a lighter and reading a magazine. Same thing goes in Expiration Date.
- maybe through the mask, everyone speaks to HIM in muffles. He obviously reads in muffles implied by pyrovision. i think most times he really just does grunt and make noises, but i also think he genuinely does speak english, and has intentions behind his words. you can hear him say actual words and phrases.
- i think hes very good at communicating emotions. in voice lines, you can clearly here when pyro questions something, or gets upset, or is giggly. hes crazy, so i dont doubt he throws hissy fits n such.
- pyro can clearly understand questions, and respond accordingly. its just hard to understand. pyro probably doesnt know he gets misinterpreted. it would be funny to think pyro thinks he can talk to people really well and that everybody always understands him.
- BEHAVIOR -
- I think theres a big difference between how pyro acts in HIS point of view, and everyone else. We see this in meet the pyro, where he thinks hes walking cheerfully, when hes actually walking very stiff and cold.
- i think pyro CAN be cuddly, and of course VERYYY expressive. but i think not enough people keep in mind that pyro is kinda eerie.. especially in body behavior. i like to think when pyro is expressive, maybe he cheers or laughs or something like that, it throws the team off guard.
- generally pyro is aware of everything and outsmarts the whole team because of his awarness. He literally KNOWS about the teams jobs being in crisis, and goes to the administrator BEFORE ANYONE ELSE, and ends up in a high ranking CEO POSITION because they are so smart. We also see heavy literally try to temp pyro with fire, in which pyro denies.
- pyro is not dumb, or clueless. he knows when hes being played, and he is not a dog who can be tempted with a bone. sure, hes in his own little world, but he knows when he may be in jeopardy. I feel we baby pyro too much, and so does the team. they dont take him seriously, except engie, but to be fair all they know about him is that he likes fire.
- speaking of the ceo thing, i think pyro has good organization and coordination skills. if you can run a company like that, it takes some good organization and thought.
