"what are you ordering?" you ask yodogawa, still looking at the beverages menu. you have already picked a matcha tea, but you need a conversation starter.
"what's your recommendation? i don't usually come around here, so i need to ask the expert" he raises his eyebrows while glancing at you, making you slightly hide behind the drinks list. his bold character always shows, even in the simplest actions.
"the iced coffee is really tasty," you reply, "plus, they also have a version with caramel, chocolate or whipped cream". masumi nods and agrees, "i'll get that then, maybe with caramel".
shortly after, one of the waiters of the lovely cafè you're in comes to your table and collects the order, leaving you and masumi alone, waiting for your beverages.
"so, how's work?" you ask about work, even if you don't actually know what he does. masumi never mentioned more than necessary but, by collecting the spare pieces of information that he gave you, you ended up thinking he works as a guard or military of some sort. you also considered the fact that he might dislike his job, so he doesn't like to talk much about it.
“nothing new or worth mentioning,” he shrugs, while taking off his hoodie, “what about you?”
your focus immediately shifts to his arms, where a bandage is covering the most part of his left forearm. “what’s that?” you ask, pointing at it.
“nothing” masumi shrugs again, making you frown. it’s not your first time seeing him with new bruises or injuries, which you have assumed are a consequence of his job. you’ve noticed that his skin heals extremely quickly and also perfectly, so that might be the reason he doesn’t make a scene about them.
“I know you got them at work,” when you mention it, his eyes get somehow bigger than they normally are. “can you just… be more careful, please?” while you say it, the waiter brings your drinks, making the focus shift to the amazing, aesthetic glasses.
after a few seconds, you start talking again. “you know, i hate when you come to our dates with a new scar or injury,” you mumble, without noticing that you called your meetings dates, “it’s so frustrating seeing a person that you care so much about coming every week with a fresh bruise, cut or whatever”
your frustration doesn’t surprise yodogawa. he knew that this moment would have come sooner or later, and now, while he’s taking a sip of his delicious caramel iced coffee, he’s thinking about what he has done to deserve you.
he hasn’t told you that he’s an oni, he hasn’t told you much about his job, he has never shared too many personal details. it was all done with the purpose of keeping you safe, out of the momotaro-oni disputes. you had all the reasons to leave, but you stayed, even when he was expecting you to go.
“okay, I’m sorry,” he exhales, "i couldn't imagine you would be so concerned about my injuries". his usual blunt sarcasm doesn't make you laugh for once and he notices it. "I shouldn't have said it" he admits shortly after.
"i mean, you're an adult and i think you can take care of yourself, but remember that someone cares about you," you say, while looking at your matcha, "i really appreciate spending time with you", you add, hoping that he gets the hint.
"you know, if you're so concerned about me, we should spend some more time together" masumi quickly gets back to his usual self, "...and also because i like you"
you know him enough to understand that this is probably the closest to a confession you can get. he is reserved and he rarely talks about his emotions, so this is quite out of his character.
"i feel the same about you" you smile, "so please, stop getting hurt".
this is the first time you hear his laugh.
