TABOOETRY - Writing Exercise 1
Write a short poem about an 'Owl'
You may not use the following words (including plurals/other tenses/variations etc. of said word): OWL, WING, EYE, CLAW, BEAK, TALON, BIRD, FOWL, NIGHT, DARK, TREE, BRANCH, FLY, SOAR, SWEEP, MOUSE, PREY, HUNT, CATCH, FEATHER, WISE, SMART,
The poem should be no more that four lines. If you want more of a challenge, it must also rhyme and follow a meter of your choice.
Show the poem to a friend who is unaware of the exercise and ask them to identify what it is about. Post the poem in the comments, including how your friend responded if you like.
I did two, trying to have one have a little bit more narrative.
1.
Sky-spliting, soul-searching, psychopomp
Plume of smoke, silent killer, banshee
Unseen but revered, two-faced omen, godly compagnon
Twin gold coins on a phantom's mask, striking encounter.
2.
I met you at the start of a journey, spot of white against the sunset painted sky
Startled by your ominous cry, me going in and you waking up
A start before an end, twin gold coins at dusk.
Well-met, I blinked and you were gone
I read them to my mom and she didnt guess owl until i gave her hints lol, she caught on the symbolic aspects of it so her first take was "Death" aha. It was a fun challenge, since we cant use the prosaic description we have to reach faaar into the symbolic -at the risk of loosing the starting point.
