Chapter 1 Act 4: the wealthy

there was once a man.

he had a beautiful fiancée,

and a sweet little sister,

and loving parents.

poor as the family were,

they still laughed and smiled with one another.

But alas, the poor and the wealthy

are forever to be at odds

but the wealthy shall forever have the advantage.

for the poor scholar couldn't stop them

when the wealthy took

his beautiful fiancée

and his sweet little sister

degrading them to the lowest of concubines

in a household wealthy of gold,

but impoverished of compassion.

Chapter 1 Act 3: the sister

there once was a man.

and once, he had had a sister.

younger than him,

cute as can be,

sweet and she looked up to him so.

only natural he loved her.

and he did.

and they were happy.

but remember, always.

nothing good ever lasted for him.

I'm not sure what it is about this quote but it rubs me the wrong way about how they're talking about Jin Ling.

It just...

I hate it. I hate how the entire cultivation world knows him as "Jin Guangyao's son" "pitiful orphan" "victim of wwx" "spoiled brat" "little mistress"

Even Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, he's just "shijie's son" "jiejie's son".

He has a name. Jin Ling, Jin Rulan.

To be honest I didn't like him at first, I thought he was pretty spoiled and stuck up too, but it just. It's not fair to him to be simplified into someone's son instead of his own person.

I've finished the main story, and I now think that he is so much more real of a person than I originally thought he was. He's suffered a lot. And the fact that his suffering such as his parents dying, him being left alone in this world, became so well known that that's all anyone seeing him can think of, it's so tragic. Because he's a person, first and foremost. He is his own man. He's a son, yes, but that's not all he is. He's an orphan, yes, but that doesn't mean he's going to be dumber, weaker, more insignificant than any other man.

Chapter 1 Act 2: the fiancée

there once was a man.

and he had a love

his childhood friend

pretty as a flower,

so kind, so considerate.

only natural he treasured her

and he did.

and they were engaged.

but remember, always.

i just want to ask, does it take precedence over our humanity as well?

if so, then what defines humankind if our humanity can be stripped away for "humankind's interests"

At the end of the day will there even be anymore humankind if we just sacrifice one person's humanity after another?

i just wanted to ask on Lu Feng's behalf because i really feel bad for him. this quote was probably ingrained in his mind since he was young and it was this city he wanted to save so badly that took away so much of his humanity. Well, more accurately he sacrificed his humanity and relationships with other people to help the city but same result so

Sandu + Black Water Arc

I was reading the glossary and characters in MDZS last night and then i came upon Sandu, Jiang Cheng's sword, and the explanation of the name which is as follows:

"'three poisons' a reference to the three buddhist roots of suffering: greed, anger, and ignorance"

as the black water arc is my roman empire that occupies my mind day in day out, the first connection i made was

Greed - Shi Wudu (can't blame him for being "greedy" about his little brother's life though)

Anger - He Xuan (he had a good reason to be angry)

Ignorance - Shi Qingxuan (he really suffered for this one)

idk again this is just my way of organizing the random stuff i crash out about, in this case its beefleaf and the black water arc 😭 im still not over it

Chapter 1 Act 1: the scholar

there was once a man.

he was a son, as all men are.

and proud his parents should be

for he was brilliant, filial, talented, and honest

and they were, proud of him.

but he was most unfortunate.

just which god did he offend in his last life?

unlucky to be born into a household of poverty

unlucky to offend the state officials supervising the state test

unlucky to be a genius, and yet too poor to please the examiner

and thus, he lost his chance at a rank

and yet that was not

even the end of his misfortune.

that was only ever the beginning.
