why paint Meigeni fandom in bad light?
I came across this blog post today [link] regarding the current Mr.Six crediting controversy. I really wanted to laugh at how ridiculous it sounds.
This is how I understand the controversy; Kris was credited in the 3rd place before but due to an external pressure, he descended to the 4th, which affects the crediting since only the first three are fully credited.
The essence of the post was that Meigeni are making a big fuss out of nothing and that it’s somewhat ridiculous because Kris is not saying anything but his fan sites are.
As far as I know, the aforementioned external pressure came from the other actor’s fans, which has led the company to change the order of crediting. If fans jobs are not to talk or question, then why did the other fandom do that?
Also, as a big production company, why are their words uncertain? Can one change the order on credit list within the blink of an eye because of an external pressure (aka other fansite’s requests)?
Why would the fans be contented and stay quiet about demoting their actor from his originally credited place? The post said the production company knows more than us. If they know more than us, then why did they cast him in 3rd place in the first place? They know more than us, as the post said.
Fans will not stop supporting him for this billing but we also want the credit that he deserves, the one that was originally intended for him. It does not make one less of a fan for speaking out for things like that. We dislike seeing how a big production company would change the order around just like that because they were being pressured. If it was them really giving into what fans told them, why cannot they listen to what other side has to say?
Kris Wu’s studio can go ahead and say something about the matter, that is something one will never know, but when there is a fans’ support backing up to what the studio has got to say, it solidifies the claim, if they studio has any.
From the previous records, Kris Wu made ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ a box office success despite the movie being criticised harshly by the critics for its craft. Fans flocked to Tiny Times 3 just because he sang the theme song at the end. Isn’t it apparent that his fans can determine the commercial success of a film? Commercial success is what production company seeks for. Commercial success usually not about how artistic a film is or how the films cinematography is amazing. It is usually focused on how bankable the cast is. Why do you think film producers go for the actors with big fanbases? It’s all about the money to cover the costs that went into the production.
As far as I am aware of, Kris Wu is currently one of the most bankable young actors in the industry, who has a string of endorsements following him. Also, I am certain that Mr.Six made a big deal out of how they cast Kris Wu in the film when the press conference was held. Kris Wu was put in spotlight throughout the entire production process; there were multiple posts on how he’s a joy to work with and how nice he is. They basically used Kris Wu to promote the film; to create a hype and anticipation regarding the film.
As for synopsis, I read the wiki page [click] and to my understanding, Kris Wu plays a certain significant role in the movie and he’s not just a mere cameo nor a walk through. As I assumed from the synopsis, Kris Wu is the leader of the new generation gang leader in the movie. He deserves the credit. An antagonist does not mean he must be credited less because that’s not what an antagonist means. [click for definition] Let’s say we’re going by the antagonist-protagonist theory and the synopsis, then Kris is the antagonist while Feng Xiaogeng is the protagonist, all the more reasons to credit him in a higher place.
The post said, why not follow Kris Wu’s lead by being respectful to everyone and everything?
What disrespectful thing are Meigenis even doing? All the fans did is to gather the receipts of what was done and try to send it to the production company to let our voices be heard about the discontent. Isn’t this the same as gathering signatures in a petition targeted towards a cause in countries that allow freedom of speech? Are the fans being rude? Absolutely not. At least I don’t think so.
Meigenis are not happy because a big production company cannot keep its word on something as important as a cast list and would change the mind after it was officially announced. I do not think Meigenis would say anything if Kris was credited as 4th and remained 4th. Meigenis are crestfallen because he went from 3rd to 4th. There is a difference.
That is not over-reaction. That is an expression of discontent, something that people can do where freedom of speech is a basic right. The post that the fansites even made is not even a demand, it is a request for the company to reconsider the decision.
The post writer said ‘why can’t we follow the path of Kris Wu by staying quiet?’ Didn’t Kris Wu also show the fans to take a leap of faith and do what one believes in with courage and perseverance? Isn’t that what fans are doing now? They are working on something that we believe should be corrected and asking to review the decision.
To that post writer: you painted Meigeni in such a bad light by making his fans out to be irrational people. That post is extremely disappointing to read, considering how it came from an acclaimed Meigeni.
To the Meigenis who brought this matter to light and have the guts to ask for a review, I am in awe.
