A few weeks before the 9/11 attacks in New York, a 14-year-old Manashe Khaimov and his family emigrated from Samarkand, Uzbekistan to Rego Park, Queens, joining other Bukharian Jewish families in the area seeking prosperity, religious freedom and educational opportunities. Over time, while enjoying the freedom and diversity of New York City, Manashe grew stronger ties to his identity and traditions, eventually becoming an educator and an organizer within his community. Today, Manashe, 33, leads the Jewish Silk Road Tours, introducing New Yorkers to a taste of his culture and traditions--including food, culture, music and religious sites, building bridges between the Bukharian Jewish community and Queensites of all stripes. On this episode of Queens Stories, viewers will discover the religious traditions of Bukharian Jews at the Bukharian Jewish Community Center and Temple, try on traditional Uzbek costumes and wares at the Bukharian Jewish Museum, taste traditional Samsa meat pastries (similar to Indian Samosas or Polish Pierogis) at the Rokhat Kosher Bakery, and finish with a sumptuous meal at one of many Bukharian Kosher eateries along Forest Hills’ 108th Street. by QPTV | Queens Public Television

Birria-Landia Tijuana Style Birria-Landia is a taco food truck that began in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York in the summer of 2019 and quickly became a favorite of locals and critics alike, earning a high rating from The New York Times. The truck was born from the idea of brothers José and Jesús Moreno, it specializes in rich and juicy birria, a stew made with beef and spices, which the brothers use in tacos, tostadas and mulitas. You can also have a cup of hot broth or bouillon. The best way to eat the tacos is by dipping them in the consommé. by QPTV | Queens Public Television

Off-Broadway in the Boros Fest 2021 - Queens The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) announces the Off-Broadway in the Boros Fest, a series of Off- and Off-Off-Broadway theatrical performances running from September 29 through October 3 at various locations throughout the five boroughs. Queens's show included performances from Gazillion Bubble Show, Hell’s Kitchen Happiness Krewe, Pregones/PRTT’s “TORCHED!," and Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. by QPTV | Queens Public Television

Scott Joplin was a Jazz composer known as the "King of Ragtime," he is best remembered for his tune, "The Entertainer", which was popularized in the movie "The Sting" (1973), for which it won an Academy Award for Best Film Scoring. His opera "Treemonisha"(written in 1907), won a Pulitzer Prize in 1976 when it was brought to Broadway. Born near Linden, Texas, his family moved to Texarkana, Texas when he was age seven. Encouraged by his parents, he learned to play the banjo and piano, and in his late teens, began a career as a dance hall musician. When Joplin died of syphilis in a New York City mental hospital in 1917, he was penniless and largely forgotten. In fact, his grave at St. Michael's Cemetery in East Elmhurst, Queens went unmarked for decades. by QPTV | Queens Public Television
