I don’t think Shinjuro was lashing out out of love for Kyojūro so much as he was just grieving and thats how it showed up with K catching the brunt of it

I see what you’re saying but I also don’t think we’re disagreeing with each other.

I guess how I see it, it’s an attempt to break Kyojuro’s confidence in his skill as a swordsman / Hashira to keep him from ending up like he (Shinjuro) currently is. Which is … broken. Because you can’t save everyone and I think when Shinjuro was Kyojuro’s age, maybe he thought that he could. I’m not sure if this is on purpose, but his wife succumbing to illness is a unique storytelling choice in a world rampant with demons in that you can’t physically fight off illness as you could the latter. While this is obvious to anyone else, if you (Shinjuro) are raised in a family who for generations prided itself on it’s protection of those who are vulnerable, what will that do to your confidence in yourself if you lose someone to something slow and invisible? Especially if it’s someone you love?

(Privately, this is why I like AU’s that explore what happens if Kyojuro survives his fight with Akaza, but maybe due to the extent of his injury, is unable to stop Akaza from going after the train passengers or injuring Tanjiro because we never see how Kyojuro reacts if he can’t protect those who need him and man am I curious.)

But I digress—back to Shinjuro: It’s easy to fan someone’s burning dislike of you if it means a truth you’re trying to avoid (or hurts too much to address) stays concealed in smoke. And that’s what he’s doing. I think he’s a smart enough man even in his current state to know that he has to still protect his sons somehow. And this unfortunately is the way he goes about it. And what brings him to tears is that Kyojuro, by his own words, never disliked him. So everything he’s done was for nothing. Once again, his efforts of protecting his loved ones falls flat.
