Did anyone else feel the latest Enola Holmes movie felt very incohesive and messy. Compared to the other two this wasn't great, it had it's cute moments with Enola and Tewksbury and Enola with Dr Watson. Also the one story told by Dr Watson about his relationship with Sherlock which was very sweet.

But Eudoria felt like a caricature of herself, like no mention was made of her being a suffragette, only that she likes to make expositions and is on the run because of that.

And how the whole story played out, it was just messy.

Just another reminder, because this always drives me crazy, but even if monetizing your fic was 100% unambiguously legal and protected, AO3 would still not let you do it because AO3 was founded and is supported by people like me who want a fandom community that is completely divested from making money off of fic.

Yes, this. Lots of fanworks on AO3 are unambiguously legal. Fics based on Shakespeare plays and fairy tales and Greek mythology and The Great Gatsby and your original character from your D&D game are not violations of copyright, because no copyright applies to those things.

AO3 still doesn’t let you monetize those things on the site, because we don’t want the site to be commercial! Because that’s not what it’s for!

It’s not there for you (generic you) to make money off the efforts of the people who build and maintain the site for free! We aren’t getting paid for the work we do to give you a nice site to use, just like you aren’t getting paid for the work you do to create whatever art you share there. Because fandom is supposed to be a community where we share with each other, and therefore we all benefit.

The deal is, we give you a free, stable, safe platform to host your works. In exchange, you get a site that isn’t covered in ads and tip jars and links to gofundme and “read the next chapter at my patreon”. You get one goddamn place on the internet that isn’t trying to make money off you. And we will defend that space and keep it non-commercial.

If you want to make money off your fics, you can instead post them somewhere like royal Road. “Oh, but Royal Road’s culture is so much more negative and stressful and lacks the supportive norms of AO3!” Yeah, because people are trying to make money there. the UK government implementing age verification on VPNs destroys the privacy and security of all VPN users. It also limits the ability of children to keep themselves safe online; VPNs are primarily a cybersecurity tool, although the UK government seems to have forgotten that. They can help keep people safe by encrypting traffic to make it difficult for hackers to access your online communications. Limiting VPN access will do a lot of damage to the cybersecurity of children and adults.

Ok this is it, I have to get something of my chest. Because of this goddamned Odyssey film I keep reading everywhere that Emily Wilson is the first woman to translate the Odyssey and because of this she has a unique take on the text.... NO NO NO THIS IS NOT TRUE she's the first ENGLISH woman to translate the Odyssey but women have been translating and publishing their translation since the 1700s !!!! In French and Italian and I'm sure other languages too!!

I'm so mad because students in Italy have been studying on Rosa Calzecchi Onesti's translation for decades!! Her translation is so well regarded it keeps being used in academia to this day and it's from the 60s!!! There have been dozens of other translations since then but we keep using that one !!!

(and also many other women published their translations both before and after her)

i think the thing that is irking me about christopher nolan’s adaptation of the odyssey, that actually never did about EPIC, is what it claimed to be.

EPIC was made by a guy in his dorm room. it was casted on TikTok. it’s a concept album realized by independent animators on YouTube. inspiration was explicitly drawn from anime and video games. it could be emotional and dramatic at times, but you were watching it on YouTube through monochrome animatics at 2 FPS. Inaccuracies are excusable and (mostly) serve the story being told.

Christopher Nolan called it The Odyssey. It has an all-star cast, and has been posited as a fantastic film. Nolan literally filmed it entirely in IMAX and then was a snob about it being the only correct way to watch it. It takes itself definitively — and very very seriously.

And so. to cut it down. to use inaccurate costumes. to cut the goddamn nobody scene. to change the characters. to cut the gods’ role down. to reduce cunning odysseus to a simplistic action hero. to disrespect the homeland and culture of the story with litter and ignorance. is this even the odyssey anymore? or just a random action flick?
