Buckle up, everybody! Steve Cortez Appreciation Week is almost upon us and it’s time to get ready to let the world know who our favourite shuttle pilot and procurement specialist is! 

🢂 When is it? January 8-January 14, 2018

🢂 How can I participate? Create and share any content featuring Steve! Fic, art, edits, manips, gifs, renders, meta, chats, music, videos– anything you can come up with to celebrate Steve! At the core of this week, we just want to talk about Steve so just get involved in conversations.

🢂 Where is this happening? On this blog, of course! All content tagged with #steveweek18 will be reblogged here to make it easier for all of you to find it! You can also tag the blog directly @stevencortez to make sure I see your content or submit it as well. If it’s been a day or two and your content isn’t being reblogged, send a message and I’ll see to it that it gets reblogged.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, I’ve got a few ground rules to make the week fun and safe for everyone involved. Content decided to not be adhering to these guidelines will not be accepted to the blog:

No character bashing- we love Steve but we don’t have to put down other characters to accomplish this

No whitewashing- Steve is a man of colour and we need to respect that with all of our work

No homophobia or transphobia- this includes putting Steve in romantic or sexual interactions with women or woman-aligned individuals, such as EDI or asari adhering to human standards of femininity 

Note: Romantic and sexual interactions with trans men and male-aligned individuals (such as asari identifying with masculinity) are absolutely fine!

NSFW content will be accepted but must be appropriately tagged and kept under a read more

Ancient Quarians As Pseudo-Pollinators on Rannoch

I’m pretty sure I heard this theory somewhere.  I may have invented it, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t, so maybe someone else knows.  Or maybe it’s official and stated somewhere I haven’t seen?

The theory is that the ancient quarians acted as pseudo-pollinators on Rannoch and were responsible for the spread of plant life around rivers and lakes on the otherwise arid planet.  This was possible because quarians have hair, and Rannoch apparently lacks insects (which is why Tali freaks out about spiders because they’re just so strange).  Pollen from plants (which is resilient and can live a long time) would become lodged in their hair while they migrated out of one area, and then later would become dislodged through manual action, especially during foraging.  In this way they may also be responsible for an increase in genetic variation in plant life on Rannoch in their “walled gardens” by literally carrying genetic information between ecosystems and populations.  So where there were ancient quarians increasingly habitable areas sprung up, along with towns and eventually cities.  Perhaps the success of quarian hair as a vector is also the success story of the ancient quarians themselves.

I’m sure that anemophilous plants also spread their pollen on the wind, but manual transportation is predictable and could probably be tracked by geneticists and anthropologists studying the movement of ancient quarians on the planet.

Favorite part of the lore: many quarians during the Morning War tried to protect the geth and saved them from other fellow quarians. They've been forgotten since then by their own people, but I like to think that the quarians, if they make peace with the geth on Rannoch, will remember them properly and tell stories about them later. This could be a geth-quarian project.

In Mass Effect, one thing I always figured is there would be way more suit variation between quarians in the universe. Totally understandable why there wasn’t due to limitations and being a game and all, but I like to think those suits physically vary extremely depending on personality and role. Gotta recognize each other after all!

This was just a quick idea for more heavy duty armour for Reegar to suit his role as a soldier (and an all around badass.). I’d really like to do more of these with more detail to really give them that ‘quarian’ feel.
