the comment warrants a huff of breath from her, bitter amusement escaping before she could think better of it. there is no love lost between her and the elder hackett. it is a mutual disdain and magnolia has no desire to do anything to try to mend the other woman’s view of her; not when her own opinion of the matriarch is so low. but, even without potential conflict, she would glad for the comfort of her own home. when they reach the vehicle, magnolia slips her arm from his and wordlessly moves towards the passenger side. she only pauses for a moment to glance at the side mirror at her blood-caked reflection. it’s not an unfamiliar sight. and it conjures memories she would rather suppress so she quickly pulls the door open to climb inside instead. ❛ i bet your ma’s doesn’t have face masks, ❜ she signs once he is settled as well. a small smile is offered a brighter look in her eyes. she can’t imagine it’s healthy for their skin to be covered in blood. and it gives her an excuse to try to rope someone into her a little pampering. it’s quite as enjoyable to always do it alone.

unlike magnolia, jeremiah ignores the reflection he’s seen time and time again, hopping into the truck and starting it up without even a glance in the rearview. strange to see such a bright world after the night they’ve had. no sleep, wandering around the darkness for hours covered in monster blood. the sun casts a golden glow across the entirety of north kill, and if jeremiah hadn’t lived in the town all of his life, he might believe it was a beautiful sight. unfortunately, he knows the deep truths about this place ; the same sun rises every day, and nothing changes. rare chuckle leaves the youngest hackett brother, jeremiah slowly pulling onto to the road and heading back to where he knew magnolia’s cabin was. ‘ can’t say she does. though i don’t go in her room much, ’ she liked her privacy, that woman, and the others were more than happy to give it to her. magnolia’s place of residence isn’t far. they’ve arrived quickly, jeremiah shutting off the ignition and climbing back out of the cab just as fast, walking to the other side to help magnolia out. ‘ never tried one, either. but if it helps - ’ jeremiah shrugs as he holds out a hand.

nick is a monster. not the only one. reggie was sure that even if she didn’t have a concussion, her head would still be spinning. how had the night gotten away from them so fast ? how was it still early and everything was shot to shit already ? the girl blinks hard at ryan’s question, trying to shrug everything off. she was of no use to anyone crying in the corner, even if that’s exactly what she wanted to do. ❛ um … shit, i don’t know ! maybe we should try and find the others ? who knows what happened to emma and jacob. ❜

the fact that the group of counselors had gotten split up so fast was an unfortunate feat. then again, they had no real reason to stick together, before any of this started. ryan hoped emma and jacob were sucking face somewhere, making up instead of being dead, but none of them could be sure of anything, right now. ryan nods slowly in agreement. ‘ can you walk okay? does your head hurt? ’ eyes move back to reggie, over her forehead as if he could see any internal issues through her skin. ‘ we should stay together. we don’t need to lose anyone else around here, ’

her brows raise and she gives him a rather thoughtful look. magnolia shakes her head a little and gestures at her eyes with the knife. brows lift a little higher to make sure he understands, then she points to her jugular, then to her chest. the order which she prefers to work. of course, with impersonal kills she is perhaps more efficient. magnolia slightly shrugs her shoulders. only time will tell what kind of kill travis would qualify as. right now, she has no such desire or need. he has done nothing to warrant it. but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t expect circumstances to arise or change. more often than not, things tend to turn sour very quickly. and relationships, no matter what form they take, are doomed. given the nature of this one, she imagines it will likely resume with some kind of grave antagonism forcing her to leave. she has contemplated it a few times. the most probably conclusion, in her mind, is that her past will catch up with her and he might use it against her. not because he is cruel at his core, but because he is pragmatic. and someone like her only adds danger to these already troubled lives.

how selfish it is for her to remain in this place.

the gait of her footsteps soon falters again. lashes flutter and her head tilts, eyes growing unfocused as her mind reaches towards that feeling of being watched. curiosity has often been her downfall. she knows what little she has been told of the creatures haunting north kill ( such an ominously fitting title ). she knows, also, what she has gleaned from the minds of the residents here. but she has yet to lay her own gaze upon these beasts. she has always possessed the ability to connect with all manner of creatures in ways humans cannot. and a part of her cannot help but wonder if she might be able to do so here as well. maybe it’s foolish. no—she knows it is. but she also knows her abilities are the best she can offer. it’s all she can use to repay them for the shelter they do not realize they’re providing. magnolia’s eyes slowly turn towards travis again with a more sober expression in them. she is not entirely certain they’re not the ones being hunted right now.

eyes, throat, chest. even without words, travis can infer what that means, though he squints toward magnolia as if he doesn’t believe her. you don’t have the guts. it’s true that she’s much younger than him, probably faster, but if it came down to her or him in the woods that he knew much better than she does, travis thought he could win that fight. he’d at least be able to get away long enough to call for a hackett family meeting. he can’t help but wonder, just for a moment, if he’s underestimating her. she’s short, doesn’t look very strong, but travis doesn’t know where she came from, does he? magnolia simply showed up one day, made a home in north kill without anyone’s permission. if the sheriff didn’t know any better, he’d think she was running from something. again, he didn’t care enough to ask.

no snarky comment is given as their eyes meet. she’s stopped again, and though travis turns to scold her for it, the moment he sees her expression, his ear twitches in the direction of a snapping branch, some distance into the thicket of trees to their left. not too far, though. not far enough for travis to feel confident that they weren’t in danger. travis wonders quickly where his brothers are, his father, if they’re safe, or if they’re closer to the threat than travis and magnolia are. stepping back to stand beside the woman, the sheriff clutches his gun tightly in both hands. ‘ i’m takin’ you back to your cabin, ’ travis mumbles under his breath, dark eyes searching the trees around them. ‘ i dunno where it is, but it knows where we are. turn around. slow, ’
