QUEEN
Career: Freddie, Brian and Roger founded the band Queen in 1970. At that time, Freddie was studying art in London, Brian astrophysics and Roger dentistry. But they gave up studying later on. John joined the trio in 1971. A friend made it possible for them to record a demo tape in a studio. They got a recording contract in 1972. Their second single 'Seven Seas of Rhye' already became a top-ten-hit in England. But only 'Killer Queen' made them get international fame. With their music, that perfectly combines hard rock with polished melodies and classical appearing harmonies, the band found the exact gap in the market between heavy rock bands, such as Led Zeppelin, and glam rock like David Bowie. Queen are one of the international mega-groups since 1975. Their tours, on which they shine with a gigantic light show, ingenious stage costumes and Freddie Mercury's action show, are sold out everywhere. They performed as top group in Saarbrücken in front of 30.000 fans on their first open air festival in August, 1979.

Freddie is crazy about Japanese
"I could definitely imagine living in Japan some day", Freddie Mercury says. "I already fell in love with the country during our first Japan-tour in 1975. We were celebrated like superstars even before our first concert. 3.000 fans welcomed us at the airport in Tokyo. I will never forget that." Freddie brings himself paintings, vases and clothes from every tour in Japan. Even some of his furniture is from Japan. He is interested in japanese religion and art. He traveled a lot when he was a little boy: Freddie was born on the African island Zanzibar; and as a child, he got to know Arabia because of an uncle who lived there.
Brian flashes in stereo
Brian's pride and joy at the moment is his stereo-camera, which has two objectives and therefore can take two pictures at the same time. "Since I have it, I dream of shooting an all-night film with a stereo film camera. That creates brand new effects on screen", he says. Broan is sure that in two years, he is going to have a movie about Queen shot. He found this new hobby in Munich, where he saw an antique model of the camera in the shop window of a photography store.
Roger is the big joker
On tour, Roger constantly surprises his friends with his acting ability. He is doing that mostly when nobody expects it and when almost everything goes wrong. Whether he dyes some strands of his hair green or imitates famous people – for five minutes, he distracts his friends and diverts their attention. And suddenly everything works out – even though nobody expects him to have this talent. When it smells like trouble, Roger always saves the day with that. "I observe other people – on the airplane, in the cinema, on the streets or on TV. When I slip into other roles, I always make everyone laugh."
John is ahead of his time
John is Queen's alarm clock. Nobody else in the band is as punctual and reliable as him. That is why he often arrives five minutes before everyone else and is 'ahead of his time': He also is the only one in Queen who is interested in sports. When his time allows it, he watches football matches or Formula-1-Races. His favourite football club are the Queens Park Rangers from London. It is his dream to have an own farm on the countryside someday. But for now, he is not going to make it come true:"My heart still too attached to music. When I move to the countryside, I will give up playing bass and become a farmer."
