The Durst House designed by Bruce Goff in the heavily wooded Piney Point area of Houston, 1958.
The Neuse Deuce 200k
For our shop’s fourth birthday we wanted to do something a little different. We created the Neuce Deuse Challenge and had some fine folks join us for the inaugural ride.
We started at Yellow Dog Bread Co. right across the street from the shop.
HERE IS THE CHALLENGE: 200k along the Neuse River Greenway. Complete it and earn the #neusedeuce patch.
Use either Strava, Map My Ride, or any GPS computer to prove that you completed it in its entirety. You have to do it all in one go to earn the patch. Don’t have any GPS tracking devices? No worries. Timed photo documentation will also work.
HERE’S THE ROUTE: The ride starts and ends at Oak City Cycling Project. OCCP➡️Falls Dam via The Crabtree Greenway to Anderson Point Park, North on the Neuse all the way to the dam➡️South to the very end toward Clayton with a Mingo Creek Greenway detour(out and back) just north of Anderson Point➡️Back North to North Wake Landfill Park via Abbotts Creek Greenway (100th mile on top of Trash Mountain)➡️Back south to the Walnut Creek Greenway➡️Through Chavis Park and Downtown Raleigh back to OCCP.
Cue sheet and route info: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7585738
There’s water and restroom stops available at Anderson Point Park, Falls Dam, the North Wake County Landfill Park, Downtown Knightdale at the end of the Mingo Creek Trail, and the BP on Auburn Knightdale Road.
- Plan on eating, a lot. 124 miles is a lot of energy to burn off, and if you’re not used to riding long distances you need to plan on eating a lot more than you think you do. Jersey pockets alone won’t do it, you should plan on using a handlebar bag, frame bag, rack trunk, or some other way of bringing extra supplies along with you. Energy bars, goos, and chews are good, but you’ll probably need more than that. Pack some trail mix, fruit, sandwiches, and plan on bringing more than you think you need. Bring different kinds of snacks, so you don’t get burned out on eating the same flavor of Clif bar all day. There aren’t many places to buy food on the route, so your best bet is to pack it in. Also, please remember to pack it out! Don’t litter, save your trash and throw it away in trash cans, which can be found at most of the parks.
- You’ll also need lots of water. Much like food, plan on drinking more than you think you need to. Also plan on drinking stuff besides water. While your intial fill of Gatorade in the morning may be good, you may find yourself wanting for some salt and suger later in the day. Single serve packets of Skratch are a great thing to bring with you, or electrolyte tablets like Nuun. These can sit in your bag and be mixed with fresh water from fountains and spigots, helping to keep you hydrated and feeling great.
- There are limited services available on the route. You’ll go through Anderson Point Park several times, which has restrooms, water, and ample shade. This is also a good place to hide a bag with extra food/tubes/tools whatever you may need, so you don’t have to carry everything the whole way. At the north end at Falls Dam or North Wake Landfill Park (Mt. Trashmore) there are more bathrooms and water available. There’s a bike shop (The Bike Guy) at Falls Dam, and they have snacks and cold drinks available. At the southern end in Clayton, there are no services available! Be sure to fill up on water as you come down from Anderson Point. You can ride up from the bottom of the greenway into downtown Clayton to get stuff, but it’s a really steep climb for a mile or two, and you probably won’t want to be doing that at this point in the ride. There is also a gas station very close to the Auburn-Knightdale entrance to the greenway on the southern end, which could be a good option if you need extra fuel. The end of Mingo Creek Greenway in Knightdale is also very close to downtown Knightdale, which has some restaurants and food if you need it.
A few other things to bring with you:
- Spare tubes. Should go without saying, but this is probably mechanical you’re most likely to encounter (flat tire). Bring at least one, and a patch kit. And tire levers, and a pump. A pump is preferred over CO2 inflators on rides like this, because you can use it multiple times if you need to without worrying about CO2 cartridges.
- Multi-tool. In case you need to make any adjustments.
- Ibuprofen. Muscles get sore and cramped, something to alleviate that will be very welcome.
- Sunglasses. Not only can the greenway be sunny, but there’s lots of pollen, bugs and debris. Keep those eyes covered!
- Sunscreen. Especially if you are prone to burning, you’ll be spending a good amount of time outside.
- Snacks. Did I not mention snacks? You will need to eat so much food. So I’m saying it again.
- Lights. Especially if you get a late start, the greenway can get dark earlier due to all the shade.
Some thoughts on bike setup: a good bike for this ride is one that is going to be efficient, but comfortable. Endurance road bikes, which have a more relaxed geometry and wider tire clearance are ideal for this kind of ride. Drop handlebars give you multiple hand positions, which allows you to change up your riding position to avoid soreness and fatigue. Cyclocross bikes, all-road bikes, or touring bikes will also work well. You’ll want a wider tire than you’d run on the road, because the greenway does have some debris and rough patches. For most people, about 28-32mm should be perfect. A quality steel frame is probably preferred over other frame materials, because of it’s dampening effects. A frame bag or handlebar bag will hold all of your snacks and goodies, and a seat bag should hold your tools and flat repair stuff. You shouldn’t need full coverage fenders, but something like an Ass Saver mini fender can help you from getting greenway gunk on your butt.
Mile 100 is on top of Mt. Trashmore, at North Wake Landfill Park. It’s a short but steep gravel climb, you are going to need to be in a pretty low gear to make it up to the top. This is where wider tires are really going to come in handy. While it’s not required that you make the climb to the top, it’s a pretty essential section of the ride and you’d be missing out on a lot by not doing it. I mean, that view!
We did the Neuse Deuce on a Tuesday, which was nice because there was significantly less bicycle and pedestrian traffic. We are aware many people will only be able to do this ride on the weekend, but keep in mind that there is usually more traffic on a nice Saturday or Sunday, especially on the northern and southern ends of the greenway where there is neighborhood access. Regardless of when you do the ride, please be courteous of others on the trail! Slow down when approaching others, and always announce your passing with a friendly “On your left!” or a ring of the bell. There are a lot of other folks who will be enjoying themselves out on the Neuse while you are out there, so make sure to keep the vibes friendly.
You should do the ride with others. Again, it’s a lot of miles, and they will go by a lot faster when you’re riding with others. Also, this ride is supposed to be fun! Do it with your friends. Have a good time. Go eat a big dinner together afterwards and celebrate your accomplishment.
That’s all for now y’all. Go ride jah bike!

Shadow Work
Origins, Meaning and Utility
The Structure of the Mind
Carl Jung theorized the existence of three levels/spheres in the human psyche: the Ego, representing the conscious mind, the Personal Unconscious where memories are contained and the Collective Unconscious, where all knowledge and experiences of the species are shared.
Each Sphere has in it a certain number of Archetypes, used to better describe the components of those structures, and the Shadow is one of them.
What is the Shadow
The shadow can be seen as a instinctual or primitive part of ourselves, it exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings.
It is this archetype that contains all of the things that are unacceptable not only to society, but also to one's own personal morals and values, normally going against social norms and rules as well as what we personally consider right.
The Shadow is often described as the darker side of the psyche, representing wildness, chaos, and the unknown, and it is common for people to deny this element of their own psyche and instead project it on to others.
The Shadow in Witchcraft and Benefits of Shadow Work
Art: Unknown
The Shadow, in witchcraft, can represent The Unknown, hidden depth of ourselves. Speaking in terms of energy, this is an area that can be a deep source of energetic issues, because it’s locked up in the dark and always striving to reach the light.
To not work with one’s Shadow is to make it greedy and aggressive, as well as denying a big part of oneself, making everything a half of a whole.
Through that brief explanation, we can already establish the importance and role of the Shadow in witchcraft, and with that in mind, comes the concept of Shadow Work.
Shadow Work can be seen in a number of practices, meditation, trances, inner journey’s, lucid dreaming, astral travels, spells and divination.
The method can change, but the principle is simple: Centering your intent to self discovery, self knowledge and self acceptance.
Working with one’s Shadow is not only beneficial to one’s craft, as it allows one to get in touch with their intuition as well as allows for easier connection with one’s guide/guides, but it also allows for healing and acceptance of one’s feelings and needs.
Think of all aspects of life as a wheel. If there is one part bent, the wheel can turn, but with more effort. If the owner spends time fixing that bent part, the wheel will turn in a much more smooth manner.
That is what happens when you take the time to do Shadow Work, you have to put in effort, and most of the time it’s not easy, but once done, all other components on the wheel of your life will be relieved to move on without that obstacle that makes their job harder.
The Shadow is not evil, as evil is just a moral compass invented by humans. It is a part of one’s nature, and to deny it is to supress a connection with yourself.
Take the time to know and accept your shadow, and you’ll see that life will be a little easier.

rice water toner🌾
I’ve been meaning to share this recipe not only for its magical properties, but because it’s honestly changed my skin in ways no store-bought toner has
rice is associated with mother-type deities and feminine energy. it can be used in spells for protection, wealth and blessings. when applied to the skin as rice water, it has anti-inflammatory and brightening properties
keep it in the fridge and apply with a cotton pad after the shower, it feels so so good. on lazy days i’ll just use this as my face cleanser, but keep in mind I have fairly normal skin🌜
Materials
· organic white/jasmine/basmati rice· bowl· water· container
Steps
· add a handful of rice to the bowl and rinse it first, disposing of the water
· add your desired amount of water to the bowl and set aside
· let it soak for 1-3 hours and bottle the water in a separate container, then refrigerate (the rice can still be used for cooking)
· optional add-ins: rose petals, lavender, calendula flowers 🥀
disclaimer: patch test and research for allergies

The sabbats are holidays celebrated throughout the year on solstices, equinoxes, and the midpoints between them. These sabbats form the Wheel of the year.
There is a controversy surrounding the dates of these holidays, as people celebrate them all over the earth, not only in the northen hemisphere but in the southern too.
One viewpoint is that the Sabbats should be celebrated as they were originally created to be… in other words, Samhain is October 31st, regardless of where you live. In the Southern Hemisphere, even though you are just gearing up to summer on October 31st, this perspective says that you celebrate the cleansing and releasing, the honouring of the dead just as you would if you lived in the Northern Hemisphere. The other viewpoint (the one I personally agree with) is that you should celebrate when you feel like the season corresponds with the holiday, in other words, your craft, your rules. So if you live in the southern hemisphere, you have the choice.
I’ll be writing the dates for each holiday starting with the northen hemisphere and then the dates that many people celebrate them in the southern hemisphere

10 Prompts for Shadow Work
🌒 🌕 🌘
Keep track of your feelings from day to day. Record how you felt and try to pin point why you felt certain ways in different situations. How could you habe handled it better? Why did you react the way you did?
Write a letter to your past self, or your future self. Then break down your thoughts on why you said the things you did. Address any emotions that pop up during this process and record them. Why did you feel that way? What events in your life made you right what you did?
Are you living true to yourself? Are you changing who you are based on who you're around? What are those changes? Why do you make those changes?
Are you holding on to something or someone that you should let go of? Why do you hold on to it? What are steps you can take to let go of it?
What are your fears? Your REAL fears not just spiders or heights. Why are you afraid of those things? Are there any steps you can take to lessen that fear?
How do you treat the people in your life? Is there anything you could do for them to better your relationships? Are you being a positive, healthy influence on their life or are you being a toxic one? If toxic, what changes are you going to make to your behavior to stop being toxic?
What do you wish other people knew about you? Why do you keep it hidden?
Are you healing from past traumas and or incidents or have you just distracted yourself? What healthy ways could you address unhealed trauma in order to move to a healthier place?
Make a list of people you don't like. Why don't you like them? Are they actually bad or do you see bad parts of yourself reflecting in them and that's why you don't like them? Be honest.
Write down everything that happens to you in a week that makes you feel bad in any way. Examine this list and ask why certain events make you feel bad.
BONUS: Write down what you believe about a variety of things (from religion and karma all the way down to relationships and your career path). Why do you believe those things? Are these feelings set in stone or are you willing to accept alternate views? Why or why not?
Remember Shadow work is all about unlocking your subconscious. This helps you understand yourself better which is important for many different aspects in witchcraft, and your star seed will thank you for it.
🌟 🔮 🌟
Shadow Work.
Shadow work is the proccess of transmuting ones suppressed aspects of ones self. Unconscious habits or some buried thought patterns inside it.
When someone is not getting their shadow integrated they tend to be naive and is not their whole self anymore, thus, not being the best version of themselves.
Integration of the shadow could be a dangerous process. What’s even more dangerous is having an unintegrated shadow. This is a lifetime process and should be studied carefully. There’s no going back after you’ve started it.
Fundamentals of Integrating the Shadow Self
The first and most important step is admitting that you have a shadow self: stop being unreal and all fluffy living inside a rainbow and admit that there’s a dark part of yourself that needs to be balanced with your light self (lets assume).
To proceed, the next step is to look for triggers: anything that triggers negative emotions or makes you feel uncomfortable. This could be anything and it could be thoughts and actions of your own, or someone elses. Look for similarities and start connecting the dots.
Then, you need to ask yourself questions: why am I responding this way? and where has this way came from? this is to know the root cause of that thought pattern, and it is very powerful and necessary in order to move into the next step.
Last but not least, Be the destroyer and the healer: Take the limiting beliefs and start asking: what is this belief causing me? is it serving me or not? then destroy it. Destroying a belief has multiple ways, but for me the most powerful way is to say: I reject that thought. you could say it out loud (and it’s more powerful) or you could say it in your head. Be attentive and creative about it.

Neptune energies in witchcraft
Neptune energy is not commonly discussed in Witchcraft. When it was discovered in 1848, it had not been used in astrological calculations before that, so it’s acceptance in the birth calculations is not always taken into account by modern astrologers. My personal opinion? These energies have always been here regardless of whether or not they were discovered before. So why not work with them? However many people are not familiar with the energies of Neptune and what this planet brings to witchcraft.
Neptune is the ruling planet of Pisces. It takes 14 years to move out of a particular sign, so it is considered to be a planet whose energies can affect an entire generation. This is why the outer planets are so significant- they bring huge changes for long periods of time and affect a significant number of people. Neptune rules over water- in particular the primal waters of the subconscious mind. It also rules over the spiritual realms, divination, dissolving of boundaries within the self, evolution of the mind, idealism, dreams, the ocean, water, darkness, mental illness, neuroses, insanity and demonic forces. It is in every way associated with the deep dark depths of the self and the subconscious- the self that we are often scared to face, the self we hide from ourselves and others. Just like the ocean, the subconscious mind is full of deep dark depths where horrifying creatures wait for us. The ocean can be a calm and quiet place, but it is just as likely to be turbulent and dangerous, just like our emotions. Water has long been associated with emotional energies in witchcraft, but while the ocean can be a source of fear and darkness, it is also a source of life! This is something ocean deities often teach us- to take a risk and plunge in because the reward is great. Neptune in the signs: Refer to your birth chart for more info (this is a summary only intended as a starting point) Aries: Point of illusion is your own ego. You act on psychic impulses but rarely take into account the other’s opinion. Taurus: Imagination and spiritual energies are channeled into concrete expression. Materialistic nature will be an issue buried deep inside. Gemini: Intuitive energies are channeled into logic. Self belief that you can take on anything will get you in trouble. Cancer: Easily impressionable. Need to make self aware of what is reality and what is illusion. Leo: Ego may hold you hostage. Virgo: Over-analyzing of self and others, afraid to venture into the depths of self without doing this first. Libra: Misplaced idealism in what is beautiful and harmonious, will be aware of the subconscious self and will strive to act out what is beautiful unnecessarily. Scorpio: Placement can induce drug and alcohol problems, Scorpio has a need to connect deeply to the self. But if it doesn’t like what it sees it may find unhealthy coping methods. Sagittarius: Intuition allows you to understand spiritual issues and fit them into your own truth of self. Capricorn: Spiritual ideas are given too much of a practical structure to emerge. Allow for things to flow. Aquarius: Heightened spiritual alignment and intuition, takes on vast and innovative changes to the self. Pisces: A vivid imagination allows you to connect to your spirituality. You risk separation from reality.
How to use Neptune energies It can be difficult to understand the importance of Neptune energy in spell work. Many of us probably struggle to connect to the meaning of certain elements, especially water. Yet emotional energy is one of the driving forces behind some of the spells us witches choose to cast. Many of us struggle to contain emotions or in some cases we struggle with feeling them too- in a society that tells us emotions are bad and unhealthy some of us hide them deep in the self. Yet they are something each of us goes through on a daily basis. Unfortunately there is not a lot of emphasis in this society in learning how to feel and process emotions carefully. Sometimes we have parts of ourselves that are painful to face, or are controlling and negative- like a mental illness. But looking within the issue is ultimately a healing experience and not something to be afraid of. We can call on Neptune’s energies to helps us connect with our true dark self- flaws and all through shadow work, dream work, divination and working with spirits. It can also be called on to heal and calm the darkest places by allowing us to come to terms with the reality of what is there. Deep shadow workings Shadow work is essential to becoming a better and happier person. Buddhism often tells us that happiness is within us. Working with Neptune’s energies is key to looking within ourselves and finding our own personal understanding of happiness and who we are. Shadow Work
– Question your reaction to things, why did you react like that; what triggered you; why was that your trigger;
– Question your choices, why did you make that choice; were you running away from something, avoiding something; are you trying to prove something; was the choice of rational or emotional nature;
– Question your desires, why are you attracted to that thing; what does it say about your life; what do you think about people who are attracted to the same thing; how are you different;
