This Needs to be Said
The shooting in Las Vegas was terrible, but it was by no means the largest mass shooting in US history. The Mandalay Bay loses no significance by not being the largest mass shooting in the US. However, the actual largest mass shooting in the US DOES stand a lot to lose by being forgotten, and the two events go hand in hand.
In 1890 more than 200 unarmed women and children and dozens of unarmed men were slaughtered at Wounded Knee.
US soldiers surrounded a Lakota village and demanded the men with firearms hand them in. One man, Black Elk, was deaf and didn’t understand what was being asked of him. The US soldiers tried to take his gun by force and in the scuffle it was accidentally discharged. The US soldiers then began to shoot the Lakota men at point blank range. The Lakota men who still retained their firearms returned fire and tried to take shelter. The rest of the village FLED.
That’s when the commanding US officer lost control of his troops. The began to chase down and slaughter the fleeing Lakota without instruction to do so. No military order was given. Hundreds were murdered.
Does that sound like a battle to you? When we hear the word ‘battle’ we tend to think of two opposing military forces, both armed and prepared for combat. Calling this event ‘the battle of wounded knee’ and not remembering it as a mass shooting erases the vile acts of the US soldiers. The fact that they happened to be in the military means nothing. In fact, some of these monsters received a medal of honor for the massacre (which, to my knowledge, have yet to be revoked despite urging from Native communities).
What’s the connection between this and Vegas? The US soldiers are the people held up as shining examples to Americans, particularly white American males. While ‘Wounded Knee Massacre’ paints them in a negative light, ‘The Battle of Wounded Knee’ paints them as heroes. Even more recently military men who have expressed delight in killing get movies made about them. White men killing people with guns is PRAISED here. So take a white male, give him these men to look up to, and give him easy access to guns. Those things might not create a murderer, but they sure as fuck don’t help.
So remember the Mandalay Bay shooting, the second largest recorded mass shooting in US history, borne of the same issues that caused the first.

Muslim New Yorkers will pray and break their Ramadan fast right in front of Trump Tower
On Thursday, about 450 Muslim activists and their allies in New York City are planning to protest Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric and policies.
MPower Change, a Muslim grassroots organization, is teaming up with the New York State Immigrant Action Fund to host Iftar at Trump Tower in Manhattan.
Iftar is the first meal Muslims eat after sunset during the month-long fast of Ramadan. The protest will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a short speaking program featuring local community leaders.
But when the clock strikes 8:22 p.m., the Islamic call to prayer will begin and Muslim activists will break their fast with the traditional sip of water and some dates before making their evening prayers.
Iftar at Trump Tower was planned directly in response to the administration’s xenophobic rhetoric and policies like the Muslim ban, Mohammad Khan, campaign director at MPower Change, said. Read more (5/31/17)

‘Ebony’ magazine is under fire for not paying its freelancers
More than a dozen freelance journalists and illustrators are speaking out against Ebony Magazine for not paying them for their work.
A social media campaign to call out Ebony first launched in April, when freelancer Cat DiStasio tweeted that she was owed $2,000 and had not yet been paid.
That tweet prompted other freelance writers and illustrators to share their stories, sparking the use of the hashtag #EbonyOwes to demand payment from the magazine. Read more (6/2/17)

The U.S. hurricane drought could end this year
Since Hurricane Wilma hit the Atlantic coast in 2005, the United States has experienced the longest major hurricane drought in recorded history.
Gerry Bell, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s lead seasonsal hurricane forecaster, said the major storm drought is more a matter of luck caused by naturally-occuring, cyclical U.S. wind sheer patterns blowing west to east into the Atlantic ocean. These winds keep many hurricanes from hitting the U.S. mainland.
Bell said 2017’s hurricane season, which starts Thursday, should be an above average year. Read more (6/1/17)

Don’t compare black girl magic with white power…

Never look down on anybody unless you’re helping him up.
“It takes a lot of patience and grace and delayed gratification for a black woman to go up in the ranks of a company like that,” Lampkin says. “We need to see more examples of that.”
Delayed gratification and grace have been key for Lampkin, 31, as she prepares to launch her app, Blendoor, into public beta testing during SXSW interactive festival Sunday. The app comes two years after being told during an interview with a well-known tech company that she didn’t have enough technical skills.
source
She herself has raised $100,000 in pre-seed funding for Blendoor. Half of that came from Pipeline Angels, a network of women investors and social entrepreneurs funding diverse companies. More than 20% of the businesses funded to date have a black woman at the helm.

Her name is Mallence Bart Williams.
Y'all need to start giving Black and African women intellectual credit for their work. Not doing so is also a tactic of violent capitalism and patriarchy.
