a template letter to send to the Minister of Corrections

Minister Lotu-liga Jade Follett, a trans woman is currently incarcerated in Rimutaka Prision, a men’s facility.  For her own safety, Jade asked to be transferred to a Women’s Prison two months ago.  Chris Burns, prison director said today on Newstalk ZB that he had only received one transfer this year and it arrived last weekend.  He advised that her transfer was being treated with urgency.  I hope that means that her transfer is approved, that she is in a place where she is safe and free from harm until she is moved to a women’s prison. A men’s prison is not a safe place for a trans woman.  Jade will be subjected to taunts and physical abuse from other inmates.  That is not OK.  Jade has been incarcerated by the state for a crime she has been convicted of.  The same state that convicted her should be keeping her safe from harm.  That allows her to concentrate on her rehabilitation. Jade has people who care for her safety and who are willing to go on a hunger strike until she is moved.  With all the other very public issues that you and the Department of Corrections are dealing with over Mt Eden Prison/Serco, this is something that you do have control over and you can make happen quickly. Please do the right thing and move Jade to a women’s prison where she can serve her sentence. Thank you Regards,
