I think the only Light lives post-Kira endgame that makes sense (other than “Light goes to prison forever”) is that Light has to become the new Watari

It solves several problems:

Light could be a force of good in the world but only if he’s constantly monitored for serial killer relapse? Stick him with the most intelligent* man alive!

L is a force of good in the world but only when he has someone else managing his ADLs like bathing and eating and paying taxes? Stick him with the most neurotic man alive!

Light needs enrichment or he’ll start biting people? Go be L’s eyes on the ground!

L needs enrichment or he’ll go comatose with depression? Maybe the knowledge that your cake is intermittently dosed with arsenic will add some joie de vivre!

Watari has old bones and would like to retire someday? Here’s a convenient poor bastard who’s hopelessly enmeshed with L and who deserves a life sentence of dealing with him!

I think "Light Yagami is inherently a suicidal person and Kira + the entirety of death note after the first two deaths is the result of a failed suicide attempt after a mental health spiral which makes the scene where light begs for his life all the more painful" is not just a headcanon to me at this point
