4th community rewatch: troy barnes though similarly superficial at first is such an incredibly complex character and through his cartoonish and exaggerated shenanigans he maintains his level of realism and similarities to real life queer people that overcompensated for so long they feel unconnected to themselves and this is explored in such a complicated but subtle way that though not obvious at first feel way too intentional to not mean something when piled up

cant stop thinking about the ryanaim establishing scenes at the beginning of leviticus.... especially the mill...

the first time, they're both so nervous, so giddy, trying hard to play it cool even though they both want eachother so badly. the impromptu throwing contest, ryan pretending that naim had a spider on his shoulder just to shove him, the roughhousing... all with such a palpable undertone of want.

the second time when they're smoking feels much calmer, because they've established their boundaries now, since their first kiss. they know, more or less, where they stand. still, it's nervous. naim is rambling, (presumably bc he's high lol) but also because he's nervous. we see that he reacts to stress with impulse (asking jessica that invasive ass question, outing ryan & hunter, etc). and he apologises afterwards. "i shouldn't have told you that, im sorry." and ryan, obviously much more comfortable with his sexuality, says "you shouldn't be." i interpreted it as a double meaning, ryan telling naim not to be nervous around him. "your secret's safe with me." (painful, considering ryan's secret was rather unsafe with naim, lol)

when ryan asks naim if there's anything he likes about the place, and naim's little sly grin when he realises ryan is fishing for a compliment... and he refuses ryan the satisfaction, even with his expression and his actions plainly stating otherwise, he shakes his head. "no. nothing." because he's learning now that he has power too. the first time they were here, ryan initiated because naim wouldn't dare, despite them both wanting the same thing. but now, naim understands that he can also initiate. he can have this, and not just be a passive participant.

the second scene at the mill is sooo dear to me bc it’s actually preceded by /this/ one from naim’s memories montage after the break up. it’s so interesting to me how they go from ryan’s abrupt change in behaviour & the refusal to share an intimate moment w naim to them chilling on the floor and ryan asking naim if there’s something (someone) he likes about bandee… ryan who’s always only known shame and pain in regards to his sexuality, doesn’t comprehend how to engage with what he feels if not through violence (the stoning w hunter, the roughhousing w naim) until naim comes into his life. pushing naim away the moment he tries to show him there’s alternatives to self-punishment… naim may not be his /first/ but he taught ryan so many things

seeing the bus scene in a new light after my rewatch because ohh my god ryan was actually just so ridiculously giddy about naim liking him back. they go and talk to this girl who tells them that the entity looks like who you're most into, and ryan's shifting awkwardly from foot to foot bc welp. guess the truth abt his crush is out there now. what can you do. but then he looks to his left and naim is just as awkward, eyes flicking to him and then away. and wait, hang on a minute. ryan's entity looking like naim is a given, but naim's entity looks like him too. when jessica yells at naim he puts a protective hand on his back because that's something he feels suddenly allowed to do now, knowing what it means that naim's entity looks like him. and when they're on the bus, naim still reeling from the near miss, ryan talks him down, holds his hand, refusing to let fear ruin this. bc he's had a crush on the new kid since he came to town, and he had to work up a shit ton of courage to lead him to the mill and take that first leap of faith. he hadn't lied, when he told naim it was his first time. what he had with hunter was nothing like this. and now he's there on the bus with naim, and even after all the insane shit that's happened and is still happening, he can't help but be stupidly excited by the fact that naim likes him back. yeah this evil demonic entity might never leave them alone, but ryan's just found out naim likes him to the point that it takes his form to tempt him and as fucked up as that is it's kind of validating too. naim likes him, and he kisses ryan back when he leans in, shifts in his seat to give him more room, and you know what? fuck it. ryan's gonna give him the best hand job of his life on this bus right fucking now

ryan throwing a glance at naim over his shoulder in the corridor at school, beckoning, begging, helpless. follow me, he's screaming, come with me, be with me. in the crowded halls where he knows that naim is really naim, where he can watch the flow of people part around him like waves breaking on the shore—affected and interrupted and undeniably real.

ryan sickeningly relieved at turning around to see naim behind him, just in time to watch his form slipping past the tiny crack of the rapidly-closing bathroom door. ryan reaching for him with a tenderness so alien it feels like gold molten in his fingertips. naim meeting him there without pause.

fingers twined in hair. hands on waists. feet stumbling backward, dragging them toward a stall before anyone can see. whispered promises against skin warmed by skin. i know it's you, ryan's breathing against naim's neck, eyes closed against the tide of affection that threatens to sweep him out into depths so blue and dark they make him feel bare. i know, naim's throaty whisper against his ear, it's me. and it's everything ryan is himself too scared to say out loud. ryan dizzy with how brave naim suddenly seems, and holding him a little tighter.

pain being the last thing he feels. hearing the wet tear of cartilage. feeling the hot rush of blood down his neck. feeling his body wrench itself backward. watching his own hands shove naim back. then, like an afterthought, an agony so precise it's nearly blinding.

it's me, naim saying again, and ryan's sob is a guttural thing made by an animal trying to claw its way out of him. ryan rushing for the door, hand slipping in his own blood instead of stemming the flow of it, and bursting out into the corridor with heaven on his tail, yelling for help.

ryan tumbling to the cold linoleum. his arms and legs feeling suddenly thin and frail. his hand falls away. a girl is screaming.

naim's eyes, dark and wide and brimming with horror.
