the symbolism of the goat in leviticus!

i both LOVE goats (like i am obsessed, my name means ill-fated and my neighbors had goats when i was a kid) and i really enjoy how the goat is used in the movie

while sheep represent the blessed, innocent, and pure, goats across history have been treated as vessels for sin.

one reason goats are seen as "ill-fated" comes from ancient hebrew rituals outlined in the bible (leviticus 16). on the day of atonement, a priest would symbolically place all the sins of the community onto the head of a live goat. this "scapegoat" was then driven out into the desolate wilderness, left to die or wander alone, carrying away the people's bad fortune and evil deeds (source)

I LOVE BRATTY NAIMMMM i know once they're out of bandee he becomes a problemmm lol like wdym when ryan goes so there's nothing you like about this place? naim laughs at him, says "nothing" and then blows smoke in his face before kissing him that's INSANE work hello . you're so different at school. the way you walk, talk, everything about you. and when ryan gives attitude he just tackles him to the ground laughing as they go tumbling into the grass.. more generally naim has this impulsive pettiness about him that im obsessed with like i just love to think abt him becoming more confident as they grow older and sassing ppl constantly + him knowing exactlyy what he does to ryan and using it to his advantage all the time

i've been replaying this on loop and i'm feeling:

1) mesmerised by the terror in naim's eyes and how he goes totally non verbal when he's scared like fucking hell joe what shit have u been through to be able to display fear like that. the way he's so terrified he's choking on it, unable to speak or do anything but frantically tap on the glass as tears well in his eyes ugughfhfg it's so fucking visceral i feel sick I LOVE YOU JOE BIRD

2) dazed by how gently ryan talks naim down. hey! it's alright. naim, it's alright, it's alright! look at me. hey, it's alright while he has both hands on his waist like oh my god ryan whelan you beautiful kind boy. what's that quote like "No one will understand the violence it took to become this gentle"... he's so careful and soft with naim it makes my head spin

and finally, arguably most devastating 3) the fact that ryan reassures naim by saying it can't get you there's people right here naim, it can't get you! not realising that it isn't true. bc naim not only witnessed ryan being attacked by the entity at the roller skating rink but also hunter the night he was killed. he watched hunter be strangled through glass just like this, and even though naim broke through the door and chased after calling his name the entity still killed him.

like for ryan this is just naim freaking out because he's frightened of the entity but for naim he fully thought he was about to die. and when he looks up at ryan through the glass, he's not just scared, he's also likely thinking in that moment of hunter and that night, and how ryan is going to watch him be killed just like him.

thinking about naim consistently trusting adults to handle dangerous situations, only for said adults to let him down and cause even more harm

thinking a lot about ryan's relationship with physical injury and pain being kind of . abnormal. i see this coming from a mixture of being raised in regional australia where medical care is hard to access + the classic australian "she'll be right" attitude where you're expected to react to even serious injuries by just walking it off. and also uniquely to him, i think experiencing so much violence from his fucked up relationship with hunter and his entire community watching on indifferently during the ritual and subsequent injuries from the entity rlly fucked him up. i don't belive he engages in self harm in the "traditional" way for lack of a better word, but has a strange sense of apathy towards being harmed and neglects looking after himself if he's hurt.. like can totally picture him being the sort of kid that was constantly covered in injuries, scraped knees, bruised elbows, perpetual black eye. he broke his wrist once when he was 8 falling off his bike but his parents never brought him to the hospital to get it checked out bc he didn't mention anything abt hurting himself until his mum tugged on his arm a week after the accident and he winced. and/or if you want to be emo like me his parents never showed any concern for him or did anything abt him being injured growing up when he came to them crying so he just learned that. oh me being hurt doesn't matter. like idk just... ryan whelan growing up thinking that his pain and injury isn't something anyone cares about so he never brings it and neglects looking after himself.

which drives naim fucking CRAZY btw. like even outside the obvious w the entity (which ryan also downplays to a terrible degree) ryan is constantly getting injuries and saying absolutely nothing about it, only for naim to find out later when ryan's left bloody clothes in the laundry and confronts him like hello wtf happened?? and ryan responds all chill like oh yeah nah all good the handsaw sliced me at work but i stopped the bleeding no worries and naim's like you fucking WHAT we're going to the ED right fucking now what the FUCK and ryan's just like nah mate we all good i even put a bandaid on it! (he needed eight stitches and the nurses were horrified)
