I'm watching the WHA anime now and I like Agott so much more than when I first read the manga. Getting reintroduced to her character, her frustration is just... SO understandable.

It's like. You're a top student because you bust your ass because your parents will make your life living hell if you don't. And then the teacher puts a new, loud, incompetent student next to you. (In a regular school Coco would probably just be Agott's deskmate, but in WHA Quifrey makes Agott share HER BEDROOM — and without warning at that! — so there's an EXTRA layer of annoyance, especially for a very young teen.)

The teacher makes you share your space with this new kid and makes you responsible for them in the hopes that your knowledge and discipline will rub off on them. Knowledge and discipline that you gained through years and years of hard work!!

And this new kid tries so hard. She wants so badly to be involved, she has good intentions and enthusiasm to learn — but she is still objectively just way behind the rest of the class. And you can't fix that! You're just a kid yourself!

This new student ALSO ruins your school supplies by using them wrong. Sloshes water over you while you're studying. Gets paired up with you for class projects and messes up with those as well.

(You also have poor social skills because you're a child who spent far too much time studying and far too little time playing and hanging out with friends because your parents make your life a living hell if you don't have a perfect scholastic performance so you keep blowing up at this kid. The kid had a nice mom and childhood friends, so she's more likeable than you, and even your other classmates start taking her side over yours.)

We, the audience, side with Coco because she's the protagonist and she's cute and it's not HER fault she's behind! But from Agotts perspective... oh that girl has every right to be SEETHING

This moment is so SO impactful for a number of reasons.

In any other show, wearing a mask would be shown as something toxic that Hunter needed to move away from, and rejecting the mask would be a sign of him healing. Him using it would be considered a crutch, something he should look past and learn to be confident without. And while that’s good symbolism for his journey of healing, growth, and separation from his trauma… I like this a lot better for the messages it teaches.

Hunter doesn’t feel safe in this moment, and so Luz looks around and tries to find a solution that would make him more comfortable. And it helps! Tactically speaking it won’t actually do anything to hide their identity or protect their faces, but it makes Hunter less afraid. Needing to wear a kids halloween mask might seem silly and childish, but it isn’t played for laughs in the show and Hunter isn’t judged for it. Luz even wears a mask as well so he won’t be alone or feel self-conscious.

As much as being the Golden Guard hurt him, it’s what he’s used to and an identity he could feel confident in.

The message I took away most from the Owl House is that sometimes people need to do things differently in order to get the same results in a comfortable and safe way. This is shown everywhere. Luz uses glyphs and paper to do magic, Gus flies his staff in a different way, Eda takes her Elixir, Principal Bump uses his palisman to help see- and Hunter needs to wear a mask to help him feel confident enough to fight Belos.

Hunter finds things difficult, and so Luz offers a creative solution to accommodate his PTSD and make him feel safe.

This is a great metaphor for disabled and specifically neurodivergent people, and can be applied to things in the real world like mobility aids, medicine, and access arrangements. A kid shouldn’t be judged for needing extra time in an exam, or needing headphones or earplugs in loud spaces, or needing to wear certain clothes and do certain things to make them feel safe and confident.

It’s just such a great moment that didn’t necessarily need to be included to make the story work, but felt realistic for the characters. This scene felt so comforting for me as someone who has in the past worried about being judged and seeming childish and silly for needing accommodations, and has struggled with letting myself do things that make the world more accessible- and make me feel more safe.

Magnus Johansson, born in 1683 in Åland (island between Finland and Sweden, technically belongs to Finland but they have their own courts and police and stuff, and they speak both Swedish and Finnish). he was assigned female at birth and described himself as ”both man and women-folk, but still leaning more towards man”. he moved to Stockholm in 1704 and worked as a nyckelharpist in bars and restaurants, playing and singing satirical songs about a vengeful and evil political figure. he got a male passport, started his apprenticeship as a shoemaker, managed a church choir and worked as a cantor.

he proposed to a woman, she said yes. the priest at the church he worked at got suspicious and started digging into his identity, and discovered Magnus was not AMAB.

Magnus was sentenced to 8 days in prison for crossdresser and unlawful proposal (because he was considered a woman, and he proposed to ”another” woman). the chances of survival were slim, due to disease, cold and famine.

we have records of his existence. we know where he was born and where he moved, that he was a musician and the first person that was assigned female at birth to work as a cantor in Sweden. we know he would be considered a trans man in today’s terminology. we know he was sentenced to prison for it, and that the conditions were very harsh and many people died while incarcerated.

we don’t know if he survived his sentence. there are no records of whether or not he made it out.

Actual text of the bill: Expands the meaning of "sexually explicit content" to include the words "or involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism".

Not and. Or. Meaning "involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism" is in and of itself enough to be classified as sexually explicit.

Actual result: Illegal to mention the existence of trans people or admit to being trans in a classroom under threat of being prosecuted as a child sex offender.

Also even "Ban strippers from performing in schools" would itself be a terrible thing, because "stripper" is a kind of person, and I can guarantee that some of those people who also strip in the evenings at one part-time job, have daytime-hours jobs as cleaners, or classroom teachers, or also work with a theatre troupe that does educational material, etc.

Basically it's a way to further regulate the lives of school employees, and to prevent people getting jobs in schools if they have ever been sex workers.
