Final Reflection
1. List three books you plan to read over the next five years that aren't typically what yo read. Ā Explain why you have chosen these books.
-Fight Club
-Uncle Tomās Cabin
-More Margaret Atwood
I want to do some more reading in the more masculine realm because Iām so disconnected from it--I feel like itāll help broaden my perspective. So Fight Club it is.Ā
I actually have an aversion to slave narratives for pretty obvious reasons. Iām in Narratives of Slavery (I took the course to help conquer my apprehensions about them) right now and my professor keeps bringing up how influential this work was during the 19th century, laying the groundwork for the Civil War, even though itās like, complete horseshit and Harriett Beacher Stowe was apparently a terrible person on the low. Iām just curious about all that drama.
Although I do enjoy feminist writing, Iāve actually only ever read The Handmaidās Tale during my senior year of high school, fell in love, and then literally never read anything else by her again until I read that short work by her in this class. I straight up forgot how much I liked her! I want to rediscover some of her other work.
2. Detail 10 experiences you hope/plan/aim to have over the next 5-10 years to make you a better writer.
-I want to become a teacher in order to inspire others and immerse myself even more in English, literature, writing, and language arts.
-I hope to get published. But hey, doesnāt everybody. I feel like thatās something to aim for after you become a better writer, though. But anything can happen.
-I want to get married and start a family. I feel like that lived experience is one of the major milestones that Iām hoping will add an extra dimension to some of my more personal writing.
-I want to keep up a diary. The blogs are a little much, because I donāt actually need anybody to see it, but I want to start writing something at least once a week.
-I also want to start reading way more overall. I want to read at least ten books a year (which is way more than what I can say I have time for currently as far as nonacademic reading goes).
-Iām going to make more of an effort to connect with members of my extended family. Weāre all quite detached and distant from each other, and I feel like if I got to know them on a more personal level, I wouldnāt be so apprehensive about writing about my experiences with them.Ā
-I hope to travel a lot more. Iāve only ever been to New York and Mexico. Otherwise, Iāve lived in Florida my entire life. I want to experience some new environments and cultures to add color and life to my settings and characters in my stories.
-I want to also try writing outside of the mediums Iām used to. I write a lot of creative nonfiction and a good amount of fiction, but no screenplays at all. But Iām a double major in Creative Writing and Theatre Studies so...what exactly have I been waiting for?
-Not just traveling, but also moving to live somewhere else outside of Florida I think will greatly influence my writing. Living somewhere with actual seasons might inspire me to write about the snow or the leaves changing colors.
-I want to have a child to read to. I want to give them my old typewriter and see what they do. I think that will probably have the greatest impact on my development as a writer--fostering a legacy of sorts.
3. Ā List five writing projects you would like to complete within the next 5 years.
-My first fiction novel
-A memoir of my young adulthood (itās been wild so far)
-A solid personal essay
-I want to fill out a planner entirely from January 1st through December 31st without giving up part-way through.
-I also want to keep a diary for at least a whole year.
4. Ā Describe three general career paths that you think you might like. If you want to put "make a living as a graphic novelist," okay, but have a fall-back plan or two as well.
-Teaching. I eventually want to become a professor, but Iāll start off teaching public school.
-Iād love to work on the story/scenario team for a video game developing company.
-Pastry chef. Iām actually 10000 times more qualified to do that as a career than write--I already have five years experience working in bakeries. This has always been my ultimate fall-back plan.
5. Ā About this presentation of a writer assignment, finish the sentence, āI was really surprised to find outā¦ā
I was really surprised to find out how many goals I have for the future. Normally, I feel like Iām just floating through life waiting for the next big thing to happen to me. But I have all of these super realistic, very attainable goals that I can totally take into my own hands to accomplish, but Iām the only person standing in my way, essentially. It excites me to know that itāll only take some commitment and perseveranceĀ on my part to get the things that I want. Outlining it all like this really put things into perspective for me.
