pairing; (mcu) bucky barnes x peter quill
drabble. might be a little ooc. still getting used to writing them both and their dynamic that I (and my partner) have pictured for them. so they, as well as their backstory to how they got together and etc, are attuned towards our hcs and all. some stuff might be inaccurate my bad lol.
“What the fuck did we get ourselves into?”
That's what Bucky is wondering as well. He sits on the curb of the sidewalk, elbows on his knees with the most serious expression you could think of.
He did not sign up for this. Yet as always, as time has proved again and again, he has no choice. It's rather infuriating. He was doing pretty good staying out of the hero business up until Valentina decided to play even dirtier. Maybe he should've stayed in DC.
Yeah no, he wasn't that grounded.
He drags a hand over his face and groans. He can feel the exhaustion seeping in. It's been a long day. A long week in fact. Can he just go home?
Bucky's phone begins to ring, interrupting the air between the new group of heroes. Yelena glances over, her mouth having been ajar as if to continue speaking. But she presses her lips together and looks back out unto the mess that is midtown Manhattan.
Fishing out the device, Bucky lets out a heavy breath of air at the contact name that flashes on screen. His shoulders sag. He's able to relax a bit as he answers and brings the phone to his ear.
“Where the hell are you? And what in the world happened!?”
He rises to his feet. Bucky doesn't even consider bidding the others goodbye as he begins to walk away. Walker and Ava both make a remark but Bucky pays no mind.
“Just come to where…” Bucky trails off, eyes flickering up to the tower down the street. He frowns as he takes in its appearance, suddenly feeling a wave of melancholy. While he never stepped foot into the tower, he could recall Steve and a few of the others sharing stories of the days inside it.
Even if they weren't here, Bucky finds himself feeling sentimental towards the building and what it was for them. Nostalgic even. For a life and age in which he had no part of.
“To where the Avengers tower is,” he finally finishes, a bit surprised by the amount of patience from the other end.
Bucky sighs. Barely been on Earth for a few years and still hasn't recalled much detail on the Avengers and such ‘monumental’ things despite Bucky explaining.
“I'll find you, Peter,” Bucky relents before hanging up. He pockets his phone and rolls his eyes with a shake of the head. The man wastes no time in making his way down the street.
Bucky manages to spot Peter as soon as he arrives at the tower. By some miracle he seemed to have found it.
“Pete,” Bucky calls out. He won't admit it to Peter, but he feels an immense wave of relief at seeing a piece of home, and safety, nearby. Like a dog being called by its owner, Peter's head snaps towards his direction, eyes wide. He has his phone in his hand, looking like a clueless civilian.
“Hey!” Peter puts his phone away and meets Bucky halfway. The two share a quick embrace before Peter gives Bucky a once over. “What the hell happened?” Peter questions with a now concerned expression. He reaches out to grab Bucky's chin and inspect his face, turning him here and there. Albeit in a rather rough manner.
“Peter… Peter.. Quill!” Bucky snaps him out of it, grabbing his wrist and pulling his hand away. Peter sheepishly chuckles and holds both hands up in surrender. “Sorry,” he mumbles an apology. Bucky just shakes his head, dismissing it.
“I'm fine,” Bucky assures, which is mostly true. Though, his body does ache already.
“Yeah well, everything around you doesn't look fine,” Peter points out. A brow raises a silent question. Bucky shakes his head again. “I'll explain it later. I'm just glad to see you,” he admits, “It's been a long day.”
A cocky grin spreads across Peter's face. But only for a moment. “Yeah, well, you're lucky you had people to get me over here quick,” he scoffs.
Bucky grins now, “I mean, aren't you glad to be with someone who knows people?” Peter rolls his eyes. “Who knows,” Bucky adds, “It might go up with how things are looking now.”
Peter blinks. His eyes narrow and his brows knit together. “What do you mean by that?” he asks.
Bucky sighs. He places his hands on his hips, letting his weight depend on one side of his leg. “I'm… a hero now apparently. A part of some group… The New Avengers…Though not really willingly,” he explains. Yet.
“Wait so like… Like the Avengers but not the Avengers?” Peter questions. Bucky gives him a look in which the younger man shrugs. Peter almost smiles before seeing the slight dismay in his partner's face. “Hey,” he says after a beat, “Who knows, maybe this is better. As hot of a congressman you were, maybe being a hero after all is your true calling.” Peter winks.
A groan escapes Bucky. He rolls his eyes and turns, beginning to walk away. Towards where? He didn't know, just anywhere out of Manhattan.
“Aw, c'mon handsome!” Peter exclaims, he begins to jog after Bucky. “Do you think I can join? Wait, does this mean we have to move again?” He begins to list off a series of questions as he saddles up to Bucky's side. The man simply ignores the other with a growing smirk on his face. But, to show he means no ill intent, Bucky does slip an arm around Peter's waist, pulling him close.
“I need a long nap,” he mumbles.
