Thank you @herebelife it has just been a stressful day with increased responsibilities at work (which triggered the anxiety) and my brother going to hospital (he is fine!) so my nerves have just been up high all day. It was so good to see this page mentioned by @fightingsail as it made me feel super happy that we’re still in peoples thoughts even though we’re fairly quiet at the moment. Love to the dogblr downunders <3 because you’re all such a super cool bunch! Seriously :D

Oh my gosh. Quinn and I were just invited to try out for a therapy dog team. Even though we can’t do it this year I’m so beyond happy about getting the invite! 

Deaf dogs really can do anything guys!

Recently my dog has been showing signs of going deaf with age. It's not so much a problem on training, when I first got her I was 10 and we taught with hand signs along with a vocal commands. But I am slightly worried that I won't be good for her, so I was wondering what advice would you have for things like... like getting her attention when she's not 4 feet away from me and what sort of transition period should I be prepared for? Obvs I'm researching like crazy but I'm still worried yknow?

I’m so sorry you’re beloved friend is going deaf due to age. 

I feel like this is a really interesting situation, as when I got Quinn my then partner’s dog was going through this. She was 14 and a beautiful dog but over 6 months she went completely deaf and blind. In all honesty, her deafness was easier to handle then Quinn’s. Quinn, being a deaf puppy, requires a lot of work. That includes teaching him to check in constantly, dealing with the freak outs if he doesn’t see us leave, etc. Where as this old girl, Jez, was already trained and familiar. She was already loyal and didn’t wander far, she already knew to check in, she already didn’t care if you left the house. She transitioned into deafness with so much ease that you barely noticed her deafness (unlike Quinn, who you notice very quickly is deaf). 

While it’s certainly sad watching anyone you love showing signs of old age, I think a lot of your worry would be from that - the unknown, and the aging. It will certainly take some time getting used to it, moreso for you than for you doggo. Don’t push her, let her be where she is comfortable. Take her to familiar places rather than exploring new lands, but I think she will surprise you. 

I’m sure you have been excellent to her all these years, and you will continue to do the best you can for her as she transitions into this new period in her life.
