When I was searching for Fakir screenshots for that shitpost I was once again reminded of just how badly he sucks in season one. Once again clarifying that Fakir is my blorbo and I love him dearly (also I ended up typing shit about Rue and I hope it's obvious from the fact my blog is Rue themed 80% of the time that I love her deeply) but.. It drives me completely mad the sheer severity of how he treats Mytho. And how little the show cares to explore Mytho's feelings on the matter. Like Fakir is constantly doing things to strip Mytho of his agency, calling Mytho useless, getting physical, shutting Mytho down when he tries to explore his feelings or talk about shit, etc. A thousand big and little things that would build up and do a huge number on a person's psyche given just how long this shit has been going on. (Rue isn't innocent either, even though a lot of the bad shit/some of the worst shit she does is in the role of Kraehe that's still her and there are still things she does as Rue aren't good even if she's "less bad" than Fakir (it doesn't really matter because it would all still build up for him anyway, one being "worse" would not erase the impact of the other). She calls him a dummy and also insists that he has no need for a heart and denies him the ability to explore his feelings.)
And the fact he was emotionless for a good chunk of that time doesn't matter, the show itself will suggest that Mytho is afraid of Fakir and has internalized at least some of what Fakir has told him about his uselessness and dependency on him. Or at the very least feels the need to say things to placate Fakir when the bitch is mad that suggest that he feels that way, though given him saying he spends time with Fakir and Rue "because they're the only people who tell him what to do" I'm more inclined to believe it's a more genuine sense of helplessness even if he only had one heart shard when he said that line specifically. (See the later: "I'm sorry. Don't be mad, Fakir. I'll do as you say. Without you, Fakir, I..." delivered in the same episode as Fakir essentially trying to guilt Mytho into obedience by reminding him he gave him the name Mytho and that he was "the one who saved you." (i.e. Be grateful to me/You owe me your obedience) Which is def one the most fucked up things Fakir has done.) (Mytho also implies at least some degree of distrust in Rue that we aren't allowed to examine either.) But even beyond that people having traumatic shit happen to them and not being able to fully process it or not feeling the full emotional impact of it until later is just. A thing that can happen to people in real life. Just because the circumstances are magical doesn't mean the feelings wouldn't be similar. Like, when I engage with a work of fiction I don't care how magical or abstract the rules of world are but I do ask that the emotional realities of the characters make sense and are believable for what they've been through. And the show goes to great lengths to examine how trauma impacts Fakir and Rue, and I can buy into their emotional realities, but it's unwilling to do the same for their victim.
But Fakir is our shoujo bad boy love interest (and Rue our tragic dark magical girl), and the show staff can't let us stay mad at him forever (Rue is framed as sympathetic from the outset and I get the feeling the show takes her mistreatment of Mytho less seriously comparatively. Let's just say that if their genders were switched people would have had much stronger feelings about the time she laid with him naked in a comatose state where he was unable to give consent.), so to soften the blow of his actions for the audience Mytho effectively stops acting like an abuse victim entirely part way through season one and we get exactly one line that alludes to a lack of trust in Fakir and Rue in the season 2 opener (to Duck: "You're the only friend I have that I can tell everything to." Said in front of Fakir's face and implicitly suggests he doesn't feel that way about Rue.) and then Mytho is banished to the land of no agency (Raven's Blood) where we can't explore any feelings he may have on the way he's been treated for years.
While you are absolutely right about how shit Fakir treats Mytho, I do find something interesting in the talk about agency. Because Mytho? Doesn't have any at all.
At the start, anyway. He literally can't have any agency; he is a fictional character created in universe by D.D. Drosselmeyer. There's no chance for him to have any agency at all until his heart starts coming back, and that's through the context of 1. Drosselmeyer dying without finishing his story and 2. the fact that these events are happening in Goldkrone, a place that in universe is part of the real world that's affected by Drosselmeyer's stories.
Yes, Mytho is able to act without his heart, but it's never with any sort of forethought. He compulsively goes to rescue things in life or death situations. That is the one vestige of his character as written by Drosselmeyer left, the tragic self-sacrifice of a Prince Who Loves All and is Loved by All.
And when he does start getting his heart back, the first feelings he gets are bitter disappointment, loneliness, and sorrow, all of which tie into the grief of realizing your trust is betrayed, that someone who has claimed to take care of you was hurting you instead. When he has the Raven's blood in him, he behaves as one who wants revenge but on a wide scope. It isn't just x or y person who has wronged them, it is the entire world for not intervening. (And there ARE people who could have intervened. Charon? Raetsel?? Even Mr. Cat!) And now it's time for Mytho to wallow in doing that, in taking what he deserves from the world.
I think the feelings are there. I mean, the entire show is about Mytho's feelings in a sense. And now I'm thinking more about what it means for a character when you say they are a character. Because when writing a story, yeah, that's what they're there for. In that sense, Drosselmeyer is using his characters correctly: they are there to tell his stories. The reason it becomes a problem is that Goldkrone is supposed to be characters who are actually people, meaning they ARE supposed to have agency. So what happens when you literally make a character a person?
everyone has a ship thats just: theyre perfect. they hate each other. theyre married. they havent spoken in 15 years. they have date nights three times a week. theyre divorced. theyre pining, its unrequited. its requited. theyre starcrossed. theyre meant to be. theyre doomed by the narrative. they love each other. theyve never held hands. they wont stop making out at parties. they cant look each other in the eye
Based on my obsession with the concept of The Narrative I think we should invent a new kind of tumblr/twitter discourse where we argue that it’s inherently immoral to write fiction because its prevents characters from exercising free will
