Hello, this is a blog celebrating and defending Disney Princesses labeled as “quirky” and “adorkable.” These include Rapunzel from “Tangled”, Anna from “Frozen”, Moana, Mirabel from “Encanto”, and Asha from “Wish”.

Not saying all Disney Princesses should have the same personality, but I can’t help but have an itching feeling that a lot of the pushback against “quirky” and “adorkable” princesses is rooted in at least some form of misogyny. I mean, what? Girls can’t be socially awkward? Is that what you’re saying?

YES THANK YOU!! that criticism has always rubbed me the wrong way. it feels ableist too. most of the time when people make fun of people for being “quirky” they’re making fun of neurodivergent traits which is so gross

Yes the ableism is also something I’ve noticed. In fact, you could interpret a lot of the modern Disney Princess stories as having to deal with some sort of disability and/or people’s perception of such disability.

Being the artsy one of the group, Rapunzel likes to set up arts and crafts with the other quirky Disney Princesses. She and Asha especially get along since they both like to sketch.

Imagine if the Quirky Disney Princesses liked to get together for potluck dinners and each princess brings a dish for everyone to try.

I like to imagine all the quirky Disney Princesses getting together to play video games like Stardew Valley or Princess Peach Showtime.

I've never heard Moana was called quirky until now! But yeah, thanks for this blog! Another thing I feel that needs to be understood is, especially in the case of Rapunzel, is that some of these princesses were sheltered; Rapunzel is obvious enough, Gothel—for as horrible as she was—had also given her no reason to not trust her until after she figured out she was the lost princess. With a relatively happy childhood, but only one person to talk to, of course she'd be a little awkward.

Anna is another one, being isolated from her own sister as well as being left to mourn their parents on her own... meaning her chipper attitude could very well (at least in part) have been a coping mechanism. Again, like Rapunzel, it makes sense why she might be a little awkward.

Mirabel felt insecure within her own family and was clearly trying to cope with it the best way she could (hell, the movie is literally all about toxic positivity), Moana I really don't recall having that many quirky moments so I can't comment, and as for Asha, she literally had a job interview with her country's ruler and then spent the rest of the film trying to avoid him!

Also, all of them are either still teens or just about to become adults when we meet them. And hey, some people are just awkward because they're awkward and that's okay!

No you’re okay. And I agree with a lot of what you just said. Also I think Moana is just included in the “adorkable” category cause “Disney”.

Disney has had adorkable characters for ages, I really don't see why this is a problem now. No joke, TV Trope has an entire page for the term dedicated to them alone. Which makes me wonder if it's not necessarily just a misogyny thing, but an old vs. new thing too, because I don't remember ever seeing, say, Ariel, Mulan or Lilo get hated for this specifically, or at the very least, it's not widespread like it is for the modern girls.
