do you have any bass tips? i can't seem to make it loud or impactful while not completely destroying my mixes

It's all about headroom. You gotta make sure there's enough room in the mix for your bass. In many cases, you might need to make room yourself!

Many non-bass sounds still contain low-end. When you layer many of these sounds on top of each other over an entire mix, you can get enough low-end to weaken or overpower the actual bass element of your track.

As an example, I have this percussion loop. Despite only hearing a snare, tom and hi-hat, there's a lot of low-end information here that I don't want or need. So, I can cut these frequencies with an EQ.

Suddenly I have more room to work a bass into my track. You can imagine if I have many sounds with similar needless-amounts of low-end, I'll be left with very little room for my actual bass. This often occurs on drums and percussion, but CAN happen on more sustained sounds too.

Some caveats: don't get too trigger-happy and cut every non-bass-related sound in your track. Beginners often go overboard with this. Your kicks, the transients of snares and toms, even pads - many of these sounds do rely on a good low-end to sound as punchy or as big/powerful as you might like. It'll be up to you to find compromises in your mix that you're willing to make, focusing on balancing out the important elements of your track, and cutting out the elements that aren't contributing to your overall desired sound. Don't cut everything, just look out for troublesome frequencies. Pretty much every mix is a series of compromises.

Green sea turtle no longer Endangered

These gentle, 400-pound giants are splashing back from the brink of extinction.

Green sea turtles have been an iconic endangered species since the 1980s, mostly due to bycatch in fishing nets and taking adults and eggs for food. I have core childhood memories of watching Steve Irwin talk about sea turtle conservation in front of a beach full of nesting green sea turtles.

After 45 years of conservation efforts, their population now meets the IUCN criteria for Least Concern rather than Endangered.

For a species with such a slow life history (it takes green sea turtles decades to reach sexual maturity) and a nearly global population, this is a Really Big Deal. This is the kind of long term conservation victory that many of the amazing humans who started working on green sea turtle conservation back in the 80s didn't live to see.

Just because something isn't fixed right away doesn't mean it won't ever be fixed. Just because the work is slow doesn't mean it isn't worth doing.
