Yearly appointments might not be necessary for every case. If you can, by all means take your pet to a trusted, well-regarded vet! A year for a dog or cat is like five years for a human. A lot can happen in a year.

Annual checkups are highly recommended, even if you as a pet owner think your pet is healthy. I see so many pets, usually on emergency shifts but sometimes in general practice, where the animal is in a sorry state and the owner says “But he/she’s always been healthy!”

And I look at its severe dental disease, skin disease, heart murmur or tumors and think to myself that no way has this animal ‘always been healthy’, the owner was just not looking. And if you’re not trained in how to examine an animal, you don’t know how to look properly. Or sometimes we’ll note a 20% change in body weight and discover the animal is actually sick, or it’s going to be if the owner’s management doesn’t change.

So I will always recommend a yearly checkup for dogs and cats, or as close as you can. Pets with chronic illnesses generally need to be seen every 6 months at least.

We don’t have to vaccinate for everything every year, but those checkups are still very important. I’ve posted some recent, in depth discussion on vaccines and whether we’re overvaccinating here and here, but in short:

Puppy and kitten vaccinations are vitally important and should not be skimped on.

Adult vaccination schedules may vary with lifestyle risk factors

FIV vaccinations must be every 12 months or you’ll have a lapse in immunity and are wasting your time.

We get that not everybody has a comfortable easy cash flow, younger vets who are still paying off their student loans and university debt will definitely sympathize with you there. We do by and large live in the real world. But there is value in a regular checkup. Anti-vet fear mongering helps nobody, especially the pets.

Better to prevent an emergency than treat one if you can. My least favorite cases to see are the poor cats that came in as kittens for vaccines and desexing, only for us to not see for 10-15 years ‘because they’re healthy’ only to find they have skin/dental/heart/joint disease or hyperthyroidism or something, then to be told the owner doesn’t want to treat/test ‘because it’s old now’. These cases break my heart.

And in regard to reviews - call the clinic and ask your own questions. Lots of people leave scathing reviews on vet clinics because they dare to charge at all even if those fees are reasonable.

 If you own a pet you are essentially their carer and protector, and although it’s not the same as having children it’s not dissimilar: their health and well-being is your priority and they rely on you. Of course we all have those unexpected costs that come up with pets, and I’m not saying unless you’re completely financially stable you should never have one, but please please make sure you’re aware of the financial aspects so you appropriately care for your pet even outside of vaccination and so on.

 It’s very true that a year is a long time and a lot can happen, for us we found out that our late cat had kidney disease (like her sister, though we knew what to look out for). Had we not taken her for just-in-case check-ups we would have lost her much sooner. It cost us about £600 and those were all essentially care bills, not just from vet check-up but from the various food and medication.

One of the last times we spoke, you said we were forever linked , and now the truth of that means more to me than ever. Since nearly the beginning of my career, starting with All My Children when I was 16 years old you paved the way for me. You showed me how to be better, honor purpose, and create legacy. And whether you’ve known it or not…I’ve been watching, learning and constantly motivated by your greatness.

Everything you’ve given the world … the legends and heroes that you’ve shown us we are … will live on forever. But the thing that hurts the most is that I now understand how much of a legend and hero YOU are. Through it all, you never lost sight of what you loved most. You cared about your family , your friends, your craft, your spirit. You cared about the kids, the community, our culture and humanity. You cared about me.
