Newsies Haunted House Headcanons

I went to a haunted house yesterday so I'm now going to try some head canons

~Ms.Medda (livesies) wont go into the haunted house with the Newsies, I stead she'll drop the children off and drive to a way scarier one with Hannah

~Davey uses the "friendly monster" passes (those things that most haunted house have if you don't want the actors to touch you)

~Race and Jojo will clutch each other if they can't see or if one of them gets touched

~Race and Jojo also walk very slow, basically shuffling like they're on their way to Mr.Snyder's class, and it annoys Spot so much

~Jack is the only one of the group to have ever had any issues in a haunted house. He had a panic attack once because something was grabbing his hair and it was so foggy he couldn't see Davey ahead of him and because of the sounds of people screaming around him

~Albert turns his hearing aids down in the haunted house because of the screaming but that also means he has less auditory cues for jump scares

~Ms.Medda (1992) hit an actor once (accidentally) when they scared her. She hasn't gone to a haunted house since then.

~Ms.Medda (both) when younger worked at a terrifying haunted asylum and they still reminisce the fun they had working there

~Specs (1992) works at the same one Medda worked at and sometimes Medda will pick him up and she's basically famous there

~The Newsies and the Brooklyn crew once made the mistake of going to Spec's haunted house. Specs told all the actors there that those were his friends and they had never been scared so badly in their life

~At that visit Specs grabbed Kid Blink and dragged him into one of the cells. It was the first time Blink had properly feared for his life. All the Newsies made fun of him for ages

~Davey (both) is very good at acting unfaded by the scaring as long as they don't touch him. His heart may be going a million miles and his legs may be shaking but you'll rarely hear him scream

~Most of Manhattan Newsies (livesies) try to make the actors break character.

~If Sarah is with them they'll be doubled over at her shenanigans.

~Sarah told a nurse, who was trying to scare her, that her outfot ate and that she should try for miss America. Katherine only eggs her on

~Mr.Pulitzer would never let Katherine go to a haunted house but Katherine's mom loves them and insists Katherine goes to them if invited.

~No one like inviting Hotshot because he'll scream as loud as he can immediately so actors will target their group. He likes being scared

My Extra Comments: This is probably my favorite fanfic ever, I’m not exaggerating. The tags may seem like a lot, but it’s literally just The Hunger Games. The plot is so well developed and I’ve read this ten times. The authors also done the second book and is currently working on the third. I very very very very very very very highly recommend this.

They had deep, beautiful brown eyes. They didn’t have a good living situation, if the dark brown spots that covered his back and slashes over his ribs were anything to go by. They were ambidextrous, and they had been cutting neat lines into their arms since Race was 14.

Spot Conlon had a soulmate.

They had bright blue eyes, never seemed to get hurt badly, and were perfect. In every way, Spot was convinced. They wouldn't want him. He was convinced of that too.

Larkin kids headcanons

Jack is the oldest

Then Spot

Then Race

Then Crutchie

Then Romeo

Then Smalls

Mike and Ike are the youngest

Smalls was Medda’s first kid

She took Smalls in after her mother (Medda’s sister) died in a car crash

Smalls was 2, so she’s basically lived with Medda her whole life

She calls Medda auntie, but she still considers the others to be her brothers

Medda adopted Romeo next

She and Smalls met him one day in the park

Where the orphanage had taken the kids to play at

Romeo had run right up to Medda and insisted that she take him home

And he had such a cute little face

And got along so well with Smalls

That Medda just couldn’t say no

Romeo called Medda auntie too for a while

Because Smalls did

But eventually starts calling her mama (mostly because the older kids start calling her mama)

Medda met Jack when he tried to pickpocket her

He was tiny, and skinny, and covered in bruises

She tried to offer to buy him lunch but he ran away before she could

She spent a month trying to track him down

She eventually finds him in the care of Snyder

He refuses to let her adopt him because he thinks she’ll take him away from his brothers

And of course when Medda sees two little blond boys that Jack insists are his brothers and that he won’t be separated from them she falls in love

So Medda takes all three

And of course since they had been in the system for a while before they landed with her

And because their last guardian had been Snyder

They come with a basketful of troubles

Jack doesn’t trust her

Race won’t talk to anyone except his brothers

And Crutchie refuses to be separated from Jack and Race for any amount of time

She tried to give them each separate rooms since they had all been sharing one tiny room at Snyder’s

But after a week of finding them all asleep in a pile on Jack’s small twin bed, Medda realizes that they sleep together by choice

So she buys a king sized bed for them

She leaves the other two rooms open, just in case any of them ever decide that they want space

People warn her that having children “as messed up as those three are” around her two small children wouldn’t be good

But Jack, Race, and Crutchie love Smalls and Romeo

They’re definitely more open to the kids than they are to Medda at first

The thing that worries Medda most about their quick bond with her first two kids are that they’re all so quick to take the blame whenever Smalls or Romeo do something

Like accidentally breaking a glass

Or eating the last cookie

Things like that

They’re worried that Medda would punish the smaller kids and are trying to take their place

Which of course Medda wouldn’t punish them, but they don’t really get that yet

And Medda isn’t sure how to get these kids to trust her

Until she finds Jack sketching

And Race watching So You Think You Can Dance

And Crutchie staring at her piano

She buys Jack art supplies

And asks Race if he wants to take dance classes

And asks Crutchie if he wants to take piano lessons

And of course the art supplies make Jack wary

And Race only tentively nods to the offer of dance lessons, not quite sure if the offer is genuine

But Crutchie very enthusiastically accepts the piano lessons

As long as one of his brothers is there too

So Medda hires a piano instructor to come over once a week and teach Crutchie

And Jack always sits next to the piano

And eventually painting once he realizes that the art supplies aren’t a trap

And Race still won’t talk to anyone

But he goes to dance lessons

And he loves it

He won’t talk to Medda or his teacher

But he meets Albert and Jojo in the class

They become the first people other than his brothers that he’ll talk to

Eventually he becomes comfortable enough to talk to Medda, Smalls, Romeo, and his teacher

And eventually he works his way up to talking to anyone

And it’s better after that

Not perfect

Jack still has trust issues

And Race is extremely self conscious

And Crutchie still refuses to be without Jack or Race for too long

But things are getting better

Race is the first one to call Medda mama

Right after he does he freezes

And so do Jack and Crutchie

But when all Medda does is smile

All three immediately take to calling her that all the time

It’s some time after this that Medda adopts Spot

Spot is the oldest kid to ever come to Medda

He’s already a teenager when he gets there

He’s brooding and standoffish

And he and Jack butt heads at every opportunity

Medda’s not sure how to get through to him until she realizes that he’s seeing how far he can push her before he gives up on him

But Medda refuses to give up on him

One day she finds him sitting peacefully in the living room

Just listening to Crutchie play piano

Or he’s sitting in the dance studio watching Race dance

Or he’s sitting with Jack while he paints

Or he’s playing dress up with Romeo

Or looking for frogs with Smalls

And she knows that she just needs to let him make himself comfortable

Then one day he’s just calling her mama and acting as if he’s always been a part of their family

He and Jack still butt heads

But that’s just brothers being brothers

There’s no malice there

Mike and Ike come along long after Spot did

Jack and Spot are already in college by the time Medda brings home the twins

She had found them asleep in an alley and couldn’t just leave them there

When it became apparent that they didn’t have parents she took them in herself

Medda had worried at first that her two oldests might feel replaced

But Jack and Spot are great with kids and are instantly taken with the newest editions to their family

Mike and Ike refuse to call anyone by their proper name until they can reliably tell the difference between them

They call Jack Spot and Spot Jack

Crutchie Race and Race Crutchie

Etc.

Smalls and Medda somehow just know

Race can tell by how they dress

Crutchie knows by how they act

And Jack has just resigned himself to being called Spot

Romeo just always offered them Reese’s because only Mike likes Reese’s

Spot avoids calling them by names and usually goes with “pipsqueak” or “squirt”

Mike is the token straight of the family

That ended up a lot longer than I thought it would
