the thing that really gets me about jack is being so desperate for connection but so afraid of commitment. the constant push and pull of i need to leave so i don’t get hurt and please don’t leave me i can’t take it. reaching into the past and holding tight to the memories of his family because at least they’re already gone, and nothing he does will make them want to leave. keeping those closest to him an arm’s length away at all times because he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop. every fiber of his being exists to give love, but he can’t receive it- because then it’s transactional, and the bank will run out eventually. having a string of heartbreaks caused by his inability to stay put with the constant gnawing desire to run clutching tight to his soul. a loverboy incapable of being loved. the responsibility of caring except everyone but himself and letting no one care for him. always running before he gets to close because it saves pain and heartbreak from himself and his partner.

thinking about jack who loves too big and loves too fast and loves too hard and who wears his heart on his sleeve but still can’t let anyone in. thinking about jack who falls head over ass in love with different people everyday- the girl on the street corner, the boy on the fire escape- but can’t fathom that someone would love him back. thinking about jack who has abandonment issues and is always waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for someone to leave, so despite all the love he has to give, he runs first. thinking about jack who aches every time he thinks about setting down and having a family because he wants it so bad he misses it already, but can’t let himself get attached because he’s damaged goods, he’s got too much baggage, he’ll hurt his partner or his children or his loved ones, he knows it, he can feel it in his bones, so he hides away. thinking about jack who hates himself for loving too much.

call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support

and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?
