Inspired...
It’s been a sudden flush of ideas and writing today- and with time found to scribble and notate and save save save....
Two new sax pieces on the go and a beautiful orchestral piece underway too. Not sure what lead instrument I want for the orchestral piece. I can hear the backing clearly in the strings, but the melody.. my brain says clarinet or possibly oboe... but the my heart says thats a bit too reedy.

Creative Pact - Day 30
Another year and another creative pact month over. (I know technically there’s another day but tomorrow will be crazy busy again so I doubt I’ll get anything done to post).
It’s been an interesting pact this year - it was used as an excuse to get back into writing and it started really well, but with a lot of things teaching, home and everything else started to encroach in on it by the end.
I really enjoyed just giving myself the freedom to write what I feel like - but actually this pact month has shown me that I really do work better with goals and targets and deadlines.
Don’t get me wrong - it was lovely to have the freedom to do whatever but I think I had too much freedom and that that clear space was too easily taken up by ‘other things’.
Most of the pieces I wrote this month were educational ones - very easy to get a few moments at school between lessons to scribble and didn’t take too much concentration. But I’ve only got 8 bars left on the wind band piece to finish and there’s been good progress on some solo sax pieces I’ll be performing in Novemeber too.
So - all in all mixed feelings about this creative pact. Not sure I’ll call it a success but then I’m not sure it was a failure
Need to prioratise writing I think...
Creative Pact - Day 21 & 22
Hooray - I found the #sax melody that I was humming on day 20 *woop*
So - last couple of days in between balancing end of term crazyness and small person has been writing some new solo sax melodies. I’m not sure if they all belong together in one long piece or whether I’ve written a couple of small pieces and mashed them together... Will need to let them marinate for a bit to see if I can find what’s missing.
Task for this afternoon is to do a bit of work on the grade 8 composition exam - one step closer to diploma and then Masters :)

Drat - have been humming a new sax piece idea around this morning. Time to sit and scribble and I forget it... typical!
Creative Pact - Day 19
Today has been educational music writing. Some new piano duets and a couple of easy solo piano pieces. Also been writing some composition homework sheets for half term. Love hearing when students write songs for me! So far theres been lots of educational bits this month. Maybe tomorrow I need to write something more for me...
Creative Pact - Day 18
I've been writing a song about a dinosaur called laurence today for the mini maestro. Has helped illustrate how I suck at writing rhymes off the cuff. Next year maybe my creative pact should be a lyric writing one.
Creative Pact - Day 13/14/15/16
Bleh.
Sicky mini maestro and a cold has ruined this week a bit blog and composing wise. Quite manic with new students and balancing that and a crabby little one has been difficult.
There’s been some small successes - another call for scores sent off, happy with the new alterations, and some educational bits and pieces written.
The windband piece is an ongoing vexing thing - I know I said I’d leave it but its annoying me in its unsort-out-ableness.
Hopefully with a bit more sleep my brain can get back on to writing things (in all senses)
Focus for the next few weeks - I have a solo sax gig coming up next month and I’d like to play some more of my solo sax pieces. So - time to get them all dug out and brushed off - and hopefully something new written for it too!
Creative Pact - Day 10 / 11 / 12?
Id like to say that the last few days were spent on lots of birthday things but to be honest I don't know where the time went at all! There was bits of music. Bit of piano and lots of excerpt humming of ideas. Ending of the wind band still has been annoying but I got a call for scores done and was tweaking another to go. Its almost time to get some festive pieces sorted for my students. This year is just zooming by! Zoom
Creative Pact - Day 9
Happy birthday to me!
Not much time for composing today due to getting older issues (and by issues I mean presents, food and soon some yummy wine!)
But still had some time to get on with the windband piece - it has become such a slow burner project - which isn’t like me at all. It’s nice to work at a slower pace while I’m adding newer sounds to an older piece, but its a bit frustrating as I usually go blllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeerggggggggggh (in a music sense) and the piece is written!
Couple of little bits and bobs written for some students today and will be sending of a call for works couple of scores later - so not bad for birthday and working really!
Now ... about that birthday cake....
Creative Pact - Day 8
It’s been a windband working day today for the #creativepact. Happy that I’ve finally finished off the first of the newer section now - but typically it’s now altered my perception of the bit that follows it... So that’s a bit of extra changes needed!
Oh well! It’s shaping up now - just the dreaded almost the ending new section before I can have fun with the extended ending ending.
Also - eight days in and still getting something done every day which is lovely *insert mini woop here*
Creative Pact - Day 7
Another pretty frantic teaching day, but also pleased with getting some composing time in. Again it was quite easy and fun to get some educational pieces written - couple of piano duets nearly finished off.
But for a bit of fun I started a jazzy piece for clarinet. Loving the piano part - lots of major 7th and 9th chords... mmm schmoooth!
I got stuck on the windband piece, so will be going over it again tonight - might settle for finishing off the articulation that I can while the new section harmonies are still proving tricky. Not long to go as its final Bake off night tho!

Creative Pact - Day 6
Bit of a whirlwind day today, but really happy I still got some composing time in (and yay a blog post too!).
I got a lovely educational piece finished off and found a load of bits I scribbled at school (chords and melody snippets) yesterday that I’d forgotten about.
Other than that I’ve been reworking the windband piece - really do need to get it finished off this week and printed out for a rehearsal coming up. I just can’t quite find the harmonies for the new section I’ve added.. hopefully they’ll appear before Friday!
Creative Pact - Day 3/4/5
This weekend has been a bit of crazy family time - always difficult getting a bit of quiet time with family and zooming round, but it has been a good one in other ways. Lots of plotting for some Samba classes for @roorecordsmusic and more importantly lots of listening.
Thinking time for work and future projects has been helped by some listening to other works - catching up with some music loved CD’s I’ve forgotten about.
But listening has also been of a different nature with having time to sit still and hear whatever’s around me. Got a brilliant rhythmic extract this morning listening to the photocopier whirring away in the staff room! Lots of bits to scribble and deal with tomorrow!

Creative Pact - Day 2
Bit of early morning composition this morning - everyones gone back so sleep so I thought I’d use the time for a hot cup of tea (don’t often get one of those with a little one around the house now) and a bit of composing time.
I’m working on the grade 8 composition exam arrangement today - always seem to pick writing for cello at the moment, so perhaps I should write for something different in the own piece section... but then I do love the cello - so versatile!
Depending how long everyone keeps zzz for I might also try work on the fragment my mini maestro bashed on the piano yesterday.
Weekend is fast approaching - lets see how much composing I can get done then... hopefully I’ll get something

Creative Pact - Day 1
Starting as I mean to go on today - priority is for some music and it’s been easier than I thought to get some in today!
I’ve written some ukulele music for roorecordsmusic and I’ve started an arrangement for my grade 8 composition exam. A bit like the creative pact - I enjoy doing the graded exams for a bit of focus and something fun to do (plus the certificates look lovely). I would loooooooooove to do my masters in composition but time and finances won’t stretch to that at the moment, so the grades also fill in the education itch too!
My mini maestro has also been helping the composition today - he was having a good bash on the piano (can I call that practise too?) He’s a fan of the cluster chords (obviously as hes 8 months old!) and there was something funky in the recording I took. If I’ve got time later I’ll post what he played - hopefully will use an element of his playing to write something over the weekend.

Creative Pact - October
Right - it’s time for a compositional kick up the bum.
Due to life getting really complicated my compositing time has been squashed to a minimal amount of time and I’m finding the inclination has been waning as well.
So - time to get busy composing with a Creative Pact month.
My pledge is to basically just get back into composing and writing again. Nothing planned really - just exploring and playing around and seeing where the music takes me. Would be nice to get a couple of projects finished off but then again there’s plenty more on the wishlist.
Just a bit of composition time every day ... and we’ll go from there!
