Story Summary: A snowstorm leaves Siegfried and Audrey alone at Skeldale--Tristan is with Charlotte planning their wedding; James is with Helen and the children at Heston--and, with his health compromised, Siegfried must decide whether to accept the love Audrey could offer or return to a solitary life.
Chapter Summary: Feeling rejected, Siegfried avoids Audrey, until she no longer lets him.
“Your last call today were half-past four. That’s according to your own diary.”
“There were—with all the melting snow, the roads have been flooded. I was forced to divert.”
“To where? The next county?”
Good Lord, somehow his tie had gotten tighter, more noose than accessory. Raising his chin, he tugged the knot loose but kept it intact, then unfastened the top button of his shirt.
The truth was, if he’d had enough petrol he would have gone to the next county. To avoid Mrs Hall, certainly, but also to outrun the shame and self-loathing that followed him like a second shadow. He had misstepped. Badly. How could he face Mrs Hall when he had very likely made her uncomfortable. So uncomfortable, perhaps, that she would resign. Leave him. He had endured it once. He lacked the faith that he could survive it again.
