“It was under this tree on the first of January in 1863 that thousands of people that lived in this area learned that they had been freed by Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and that was a turning point in the war because the war now became one of freedom as opposed to just trying to keep the Union together.” - Robert Watson, Hampton University
Emancipation Oak is designated one of the 10 Great Trees of the World by the National Geographic Society. Check out @goodstuffshow‘s look into the history of the Abolitionist Movement.
My family is from this town and I’ve never even heard of this tree. My relatives there still refer to the Civil War as the war of northern aggression, so I can’t say I’m surprised, but I am sad that my Dad never thought to mention it to me.
This type of history erasure is what makes videos like this so important. So thank you PBS. Definitely going to see that tree the next time I’m down south.
Me too.

Watch: Stevie Wonder takes an awesome stand for accessibility at the Grammys
The GIFs show Stevie Wonder presenting an award with three captions:
Y’all can’t read this, huh?
You can’t read it! You can’t read braille! Na na na na!
Wee need to make every single thing accessible to every single person with a disability.
(Thanks to @leatherjacketsknitsweaters)

Woah this is brilliant.
This 11-year-old understands more about the importance of representation than all of the adults at Fox News combined.
A whole new generation believing in themselves not allowing any supremacy standing in their way
