Mariah Carey is a New 'American Idol' Judge
The Television Associated Press announced today in Loas Angeles that Mariah Carey will join the judges of American Idol. "As a singer, songwriter and producer, it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with American Idol," said Carey. "I can't wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon." - Rolling Stone She is the first new judge announced since Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez left the show. It was rumored that Aretha Franklin and Charlie Sheen were considered for the part. I would have been happy to see Aretha Franklin join the judges table with her vast knowledge and experience in the music world. I would have been greatly disappointed if it was Charlie Sheen became a judge. It would have been a very sad attempt at a ratings boost. Let us know what you think of the decision to add Mariah Carey to the American Idol judges table.
Born This Way Ball
Some conservative groups in South Korea have complained about the upcoming tour. They are banning any person under 18 from attending the concert because the officials believe that some of her lyrics and costumes are too sexually provocative.
Gaga will also perform in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Taipei, Manila and Bangkok, but a senior official in Indonesia's top Islamic authority has reportedly urged fans in that country to shun Lady Gaga, saying her show is "intended to destroy the nation's morality."
This urging has not stifled ticket sales in any of the countries. In Indonesia 25,000 tickets were sold in the first two hours of being on sale. Lady Gaga's enthusiasm has not diminished on this tour despite the controversy. She is very excited to be on tour and her only complaint thus far is a case of jet-lag.
Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used to Know' Claims the Top Spot On Billboard's Hot 100
On April 10th Glee performed a version of 'Somebody That I Used to Know' and on April 14th, Goyte performed on SNL. According to the Nielsen SoundScan his song was downloaded 542,000 from April 9 - 15. Goyte ranks #4 on the all-time most downloads in a single week since SoundScan started tracking digital downloads in 2003. Across all format the song's popularity is up an amazing 19% in one week.
As "Somebody" and "Young" have also both topped the Alternative Songs chart, two Alternative Songs leaders have crowned the Hot 100 consecutively for the first time dating to the former list's Sept. 10, 1988, launch.
Niki Minaj's 'Roman' Tops The UK Charts
Carly Rae Jepsen managed to score the number 2 spot with "Call Me Maybe."
Sean Paul's "She Doesn't Mind" stands at No. 2 for a third week on the new U.K. singles survey, with 2012's bestselling single to date, Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know," featuring Kimbra, rebounded 5-3. Minaj's "Starships" fell 3-4 and last week's No. 1, Chris Brown's "Turn Up The Music," fell to No. 5.
Madonna's MDNA dropped from number 1 to number 7 this week.
Let's Big Happy
The new series is sponsored by Taco Bell and is also available on a number of different video down load sites.
Roger Mincheff, President of MySpace Entertainment, said the show embodies everything MySpace stands for – a platform for the creative community to be “discovered” and a welcome substitute to the big label-driven music industry.
Speaking of hungry, the final episode cements the indie bands-meets-corporate America relationship – Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Tacos (the taco shell is a Dorito, no seriously), which launched in-store this month, will star alongside the actors and bands.
Let's check it out. It is an interesting concept and well when was the last time you were on myspace?
Lisa Marie Presley: Storm & Grace
Lisa Marie Presley spoke to Rolling Stone about recording this album in England despite it being a very American style. She said that her reason for recording in England was because she was running low on creativity. She wanted to go some place where she could feel inspired and create an amazing record.
To read more visit the Rolling Stone website. We at Rack Off And Rage are excited to hear this new album and start playing it at your wedding reception.
Media Blackout: Lady Gaga
The pop diva announced a total media blackout that she already has embarked on. In the prerecorded interview she stated, "I do not intend to talk to anyone for a very long time," (Rolling Stone). She is cutting out everything going as far to say as "If my mom calls and says 'Did you hear about?'... I shut it all off."
She concluded the interview by talking about wanting to settle down and start a family. Specifically she said she wants, "a soccer team."
March Music Madness: Round 2
After looking at the results of round one you can see that Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears make half of the of the Sweet 16. Eminem also squeaked out the closest victory of the competition so far.
Go out and vote for you favorite songs. On Tuesday billboard will release the top 8. On March 30th they will crown the champion of this contest.
The Music of The Hunger Games
Taylor Swift wrote two of the songs an the sound track "Safe and Sound" and "Eyes Open." She reflects of the writing experience comparing it to what she has normally written in the past. "It's pretty intense writing about my own life, my own struggles. It was almost like a vacation to get to write from someone else's perspective," (Taylor Swift via rollingstone.com). Not only was Swift asked to write original songs for the sound track, but also Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, Miranda Lambert, Maroon 5, Kid Cudi, and Neko Case. All of whom performed and/or original songs for the movie.
More information can be found at the Rolling Stone website. We here at Rack Off And Rage are excited for this movie to come out and look forward to hearing the music in the movie. Producer Greg Wells wants the music to feel, "big in a darker, intense way, more like a threatening way rather than a Celine Dion way," (via Rolling Stone).
March Music Madness: Round 1
Above is the graphic on the billboard website. As you can see they pit 32 songs against each other dating all they way back to March 2010. The voting started yesterday morning. The list is very hard to determine who you want advancing from each bracket. This should make for an interesting March Madness. I have voted and I hope you do to. On Friday, March 16th, billboard will release the winners from the first round and begin the second round of voting. With the way this plays out Katy Perry could end up facing herself in the championship or so could Rihanna. So get out and vote and make it a good time.
Since this is the Rack Off And Rage company blog I'd like to inform you that we have all these artists and songs available for you to listen to at your next even. Hope to hear from you soon!
Top Money Makers in 2012
At the bottom of the list just making the cut is Linkin Park with a meager $5.2 million. The group did this by touring Australia, Europe, Asia, and the US. These guys worked hard for the money...so hard for the money. Sadly they are at the bottom of the top forty at #40.
After separating in June 1994 New Kids On the Block reunited in 2008. Four years later they managed to make the top 40 list at #36 with making $5.5 million last year while touring with Backstreet Boys.
Speaking of the Backstreet Boys they also made the list at 33 toping the co-headliner NKOTB. Backstreet Boys managed to edge out NKOTB by $0.2 million. For those of you who have a hard time with math the total would be $5.7 million.
No surprise here when rush made the list at #32. Now I am a pretty big Rush fan and after proudly going to the added date of the Time Machine Tour at the United Center in Chicago last April I can see why these guys made the list. The concert was 3 solid hours of Rush with no warmup band. From that hard rocking band from the mid 70's earned a total of $5.8 million.
At #25 is Paul McCartney. Former Beatle and 1 of 2 surviving members toured last year and this earned him $6.72 million.
Edging out Sir Paul was his former band the Beatles at #24 with $6.74 million. Now for those of you who know about Apple and iTunes not having the Beatles available to download until last year this isn't that big of a surprise. Obviously the Beatles are not touring and that money was made from all the iTunes purchase made last year.
At #15 Toby Keith made $10.4 million. He released one of my new favorite songs last year Red Solo Cup on the album Clancy's Tavern. I'm not a big country fan but after listening to this song I don't know why there hasn't been a song sooner about red solo cups. Those cups are a staple to any college student dining set.
Coming in at #10 was Adele making $13.1 million last year. Due to the surgery she had last year on her throat most of this money was made from here excellent album 21. I personally love this album and is definitely in my collection.
At #1 making a whopping $35.7 million is none other than the pop-country superstar Taylor Swift. After touring the world last year promoting her album Speak Now. She also earned large portion from song writer royalties because she wrote the album by herself
Well that rounds out the outstanding, amazing, and unusual people on the top 40 list of money makers.
