It’s a blow he’s not willing to show, but the secrecy hurt. Did he ever hide things from her? He’s not sure whether or not he can even remember, but now he kind of wants to. “Well, I hope whoever it is, they aren’t a bad person.”

Leo runs he hands through his hair when she’s not looking, now stressed as he thinks back to when they started drifting apart. Was it something he did? When she’s facing him again, he can’t stop himself from reassuring her he’ll always be here, “Just… promise me you won’t hide like Tsura did if anything happens? I can’t be a proper brother if we hide things from each other.”

Ariella hated making him feel like this. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust him, she trusted him more than any other soul on this planet. She didn’t want to disappoint him. Staring at him, she tries to come up with something to say that doesn’t sound like a blatant lie. 

“Leo, I…” And then it’s all she can think about, the way Tsura and Vinny hurt each other. But Vinny was different now, and he loved her. Not Tsura. She swallows thickly. “Yeah, I promise.” Smiling at him one last time, she digs into her sandwich.

[ Ari could never tell him, not after what Vinny had done to Tsura. Though Tsura wasn’t entirely innocent either. She smiles at him, tight and forced. ]

     "Not for awhile if I can help it.“

[ She steps away from her brother, moving to the fridge to find something for lunch. Leo wouldn’t understand how Vinny had changed, how Ari had brought out the good in him. Vinny was never a bad person, he just never had a chance. She takes out one of the sandwiches her mami must have left in fridge for them this morning, and then returns to the counter. ]

A laugh escapes her, not mocking, but genuinely surprised. “A mate? Heavens, papa, no.” She sits back and shakes her head at him. “No, they’re just… nontraditional.” That’s one way to put it.

She is excited to talk to him now, wiggling in her seat a bit. “The alpha, his name is Wolf but he’s passed the torch to his daughter. So technically she’s the alpha now, and there’s other humans. There was a vampire once, and witches. Papa, it’s perfect for me.” She’d never felt like she’d belonged anywhere before this. Taking a calming breath, she tries to settle down a bit. She’d missed talking to him like this but he was always so calm and collected. She felt silly bouncing around like a child.

“That’s very nontraditional.” Leo smirks and spins a little in the chair he occupied, “That sounds wonderful, sweetheart. The world needs more of that, peaceful coexistence.” He missed this, being able to talk to her about anything and everything going on with her day. Leo is done fighting with her or lecturing her about anything because she’s been an adult for years now, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing that drives her away. He tries to stay on topic, keep it where she wants it instead of moving toward something... difficult.

He quirks an eyebrow, just now realizing she said the alpha’s name was Wolf. He laughs belatedly and sets his cup down, “Wait you said his name is Wolf?” How fitting for a werewolf to be named wolf, kind of weird though. It’s be like naming a vampire ‘Vampire’, but at least Wolf is actually a name. “Please tell me it’s short for something, do they make fun of him for it?”

Mina feels her muscles ease, the tension slowly leaking out of her. Who was this man? She stares at him for a moment before slowly sitting in her chair. Suddenly she wants to tell him everything. And that feeling made her fingers tremble. She curls them in, holding her hands in delicate fists on her lap. 

“They’re my pack now,” she says, still a bit nervous. “They’re good people. A little… crazy… but good.” She looks into his eyes briefly, she really did look so much like him. “I haven’t seen Kurt in awhile, he’s got a new litter.” Sometimes Mina wondered if Kurt was just building a pack of his own. Wasn’t this Riley’s third or fourth litter now? She shakes her head to focus on her father again.

“Dad,” she says quietly. “I’d come home if I could, you know that right?” 

Leo can’t keep his eyebrows from raising in surprise. “You’re part of a pack?” That was a little strange because as far as he knew, wolves didn’t have packs with humans or witches in them unless they were mates. He is almost afraid to ask, but he is curious if she found someone to spend the rest of her life with. He doesn’t say anything else about Kurt, the guy is already ten light years out of his mind because of her next statement.

Leo doesn’t want to talk about it, but he has to reassure her that she’s not hurting him. Or at least make it seem like this doesn’t hurt. “Oh I know, I just worry is all. I want to see that you’re doing okay.” he waves his hand and turns to look at the rain again.

“So did you… like Ariella… find a mate?” It’s strange to call them that, but that’s what wolves find. Mate or soulmate. Basically the same thing right?

“No one in particular,” she lies through her teeth, and expertly so. Mina doesn’t know when the lying started, the constant hiding. Leo wasn’t a particularly bad father, sure he’d made mistakes but what father didn’t? It’s not like he had a great role model, someone to teach him to be a dad. But she loathes him sometimes, loathes the father she knows he could have been. Loathes that there were nights she was desperate to be sung to sleep by him but he was half a world away.

Stirring a cube of sugar into his cup, she stares at her painted fingernails on the spoon. Looking at him proved harder every time they were together. “Well…” she hesitates. “A couple of…wolves.” She braces herself for his chastising. Wolves were untrustworthy, reckless. The only wolves she should trust were the ones in her family. Sometimes she wondered if he was just bitter that he kept losing the women he loved to them.

The thought is spiteful and she feel guilty for it every time it crosses her mind. Taking a depp breath, she sets his cup on the control dash in front of him. “A pack, actually.”

“A whole pack of wolves?” The news isn’t surprising really. Leo had accepted the fact that Mina would always attract wolves. It wasn’t really Kurt’s fault or even her uncle Vincent’s. Leo was icy toward both of them earlier in their lives, but after all these years he realized a good person can be any species. “Were they good ones or bad ones?” he assumed so because she’s still alive, but at the same time she’s strong enough to take some out. 

For some reason, a memory of Kurt answering the door in sunglasses crops up and Leo tries not to laugh. At the time it was annoying, but now it’s funny thinking about those days. Mina loved him then, she talked to him then. “Did you meet them through Kurt?”

There wasn’t a particular reason she felt uneasy around her father. There were many. Everytime she looked at him, her own pain reflected back into her eyes. Their mutual loss. He never moved on, and neither did she. Then there was the blame. All her father ever did was blame himself, for everything. For a man who appeared so cold, he was raging with fire inside. And it was swallowing him whole.

She couldn’t become that.

“Not today, Dad.” Mina doesn’t want to scare him off, she missed him horribly. She was just afraid of the way their energy buzzed once in contact with the other’s. “I’m tired.” She gives him a weak smile before getting up to move into the kitchenette. “Would you like a cuppa?”

A little glimmer of hope, something for him to grab on to. Leo nods and ruffles his hair again, “Yeah, ‘course.” Maybe this would be better, just the two of them alone watching the rain together. They’d be able to catch up with each other, it wasn’t like they never called or talked on the phone. He just wanted to be in her presence, the buzz of her energy felt more like home to him than anywhere he laid his head at night.

Leo watches her as she moves around her small kitchen and wonders if they’d still be this way had her mother died of old age instead. Would they still be this broken inside? Living in what ifs, Leo needed to learn to stop regretting everything but the longer he lived the more he wanted to trade places with the dead.

Tearing himself away from his thoughts, he decides to open up a conversation so he’s not drowning in his sorrows again and again. “Meet anyone interesting on your travels? I’ve just been swamped trying to help your aunt Ari.”

Water beats down onto her shuttle, and she watches it cascade down the window like a waterfall. It doesn’t cover up the rustle of clothing behind her of course. Besides, she felt his energy signal a mile away.

“Dad,” she says shortly. She doesn’t mean to be so curt with him, but she knows what he’s going to say. That she needs to come home, her place was with her family. A Mariga. All she wanted to do was run away and see the stars. Forget she even had a family. “I’m just waiting out the storm, is all.”

It was pouring outside but he didn’t give a shit about his wet suit or his designer shoes, his daughter was here and he wanted to see her. Leo shot straight out of the building and ran as fast as he could, so afraid she would disappear again. They should be together, or at least have some semblance of a good relationship. He’d went wrong somewhere over the years and he missed her, he just wanted her to come home.

Leo’s face fell, of course she wasn’t here to see him. He takes a seat in her co-pilot’s chair and ruffles his hair just a bit to try and dry it. He sighs and looks over the buttons on her console before he turns to her, “Why don’t you stay for dinner? I know this isn’t home, but most of the people are nice here. They’ve got great food...”

Just finishing a couple hours of playing games, Kurt puts Mina to sleep and heads downstairs to reheat the morning coffee and finish his news paper. He’s on the last page when he senses someone approaching the front door. He wasn’t expecting anyone by, at least Lisbeth hadn’t mentioned any visitors. Still wearing his costume from playing secrect agents with Mina he stands up and walks over to the peek hole, waiting for said person to knock.

He could smell him before he even looked through the peep hole, it was Mina’s biological father Leo. He opens the door and says, “Sup brah? Lisbeth didn’t say you were coming by today, and I just put Mina down for her nap”.

When Kurt opened the door, Leo had to keep from rolling his eyes. That was a little annoying, Lisbeth forgetting to tell Kurt he came on the same day at the same time every day to pick up Mina. Of course, this could just be Kurt trying to get a rise out of him. Stepping closer towards the door, he smiled and replied simply, "Ah, I'm sure it just slipped her mind. I can just wait for my daughter to wake up."

Maybe it was rude to invite himself in and maybe it was highly unnecessary since he lived right down the street, but Leo didn't care. He refused to feel like he was being robbed of his time with Mina. Waiting there for Kurt to move, he decided he'd push past the taller man if he had to. Wolf or not, Leo could care less.

“What did you expect, Leo?” The silence in the house is deafening. Kurt had taken Mina out for the day, like he usually did while Lisbeth was at work. She hadn’t even had the chance to take her shoes off before Leo was knocking at the door.

Swallowing hard, she didn’t dare make her way past him. Not because she was afraid of him, that would be insane. He would never do a thing to hurt her, not physically. No, she was just afraid of herself. Afraid of what she would do if she got too close. She loved Kurt, dearly, but Leo was like a drug. Just the mention of him had her longing. “I love him,” she says firmly, despite how weak she is inside.

Standing there staring at the ceiling, he could feel the heat bubbling up under his skin. It took him years to master this, to get it under control, yet still it crackled in his finger tips. The silence was shattered when he looked down at her and shouted, "I don't know!"

Were his eyes on fire too? He wanted to let the flames engulf him, tear a hole through her roof, and fly off to anywhere else. Why was this happening? Why couldn't she just be happy with things the way they were? No matter how hard he tried not to be, he was his father's son. Running away from affection must have been in the family. "Love?" he scoffed, "You always have, haven’t you?"

He was naive to think she wouldn’t find someone else, but it’s not like this wasn’t his own fault. Leo was a book filled with failed romances and now he had to see one move on without him. After knocking on the door to her apartment, he waited dreading the possibility of someone other than his daughter answering it.

Unlucky, he squared his shoulders and stood as tall as he could before the door opened. “Hey, I’m here to pick up Mina.”

Mina likes it here, even if she wished Dad still lived with her and Mom. She liked visiting Dad’s house and seeing all his weapons, especially since Mom didn’t allow any in the house. Peeking through the bag he has left open on the kitchen table this morning, she chews loudly on her cereal.

“That would probably hurt,” she whispers with a stuffed mouth, looking at a particularly sharp set of knives. They had hooks on the end, and she wondered if the people her Daddy stuck with them felt like fish. When she sees him peer over, she straightens up like she wasn’t looking and flashes him a milky smile.

Weapons were mounted on his wall and stored in glass cases along the hall. They were on display not just for the aesthetics, but also because if anyone were to threaten him in his own home, he’d be ready for them. His spoon was halfway to his mouth when he caught her checking out his current arsenal.

Laughing, he returned her silly sweet smile. He loved her more than anything in this world, and he would tear out his own heart if she’d asked for it. Sometimes, he thought he was doing the right thing for Lisbeth and her, his name was marked for death and they didn’t deserve that. “Sweetheart, your mum’s gonna kill me if she knows I let you look at that. If you keep it a secret, maybe I’ll let you hold one of the milder ones.” Maybe she was interested, but would her mother rip him in half? Most definitely.

It takes Lisbeth a moment to realize the change in his demeanor. She found it hard, to recognize what someone is feeling as they speak to her. She knew it was a part of her… defect. “Oh.”

Gingerly, she touches her bruised cheek and traces it as if doing it for him. Delightful. He found her face delightful. Now she was all black and blue and red. Her fingers tremble as she pushes her hair behind her ear, eyes on his shoes now. “I just- Th- Thank you.” This must be such a hard time for him, these people were his family. Her only family lived back in the states, and her father was safe and sound. “I’m sorry,” she says suddenly, like she just realized what was appropriate to say. “You shouldn’t have to clean up this mess. I can help.”

It wasn’t her fault, it was normal for people to express condolences but he didn’t want them. He nodded his thanks and looked away for a moment at the rubble.

“I’m just looking for anything that I recognize in the mess.”  Keeping busy was only keeping Leo sane. For once, he didn’t want to be around his family because they would only remind him of the fallen. At least he was just standing in a pile of destruction and not the bodies of his family, those were taken care of by others. “Umm...” he smiled at her as if he just remembered she was standing there, “but you can join me of course. Anything interesting just toss it over.”

Gem notices when the temperature in the room literally skyrockets. Sweat beads on her lower back, and she wonders if everyone else can feel it because they suddenly become very quiet. She avoids his glittering eyes for a couple seconds, trying to catch her breath in the stifling fog.

He hadn’t made her feel bad for her admittedly uncivilized behavior, he hadn’t even made her upset. Just… Hot. She shifts uncomfortably, barely looking up at him through her thick lashes. Seriously, she probably had three rows of black yarn strands for eyelashes. It made her feel like a camel. “I…” Another struggle of a breath, shifting from one foot to the other. She’s sure he can see it now, the way her clothes clung a little tighter to her waif like body.

“I didn’t- Fuck.” Backing away, stumbling into another soldier behind her who quickly catches her by the shoulders. Now she’s the one with all eyes on her, which is oddly like being in one of the pornos she favourited and Nico found on her computer by accident. God, she’s so embarrassed. Why did she always do this? Why did she take every little thing and blow it so far out of proportion? Why couldn’t she behave like a normal person?

Now she finally meets his eyes like he can help her, like she hadn’t just tried to ridicule him in front of all his men. It was his heat that suffocated her, and yet she knew he would rescue her from the fire. It burned when her eyes filled with salt, the way it did whenever she got herself into these situations. Tough little Gem, without a parent or guardian to care for her, mouthing off to people three times her size. It was survival, if your bark was big enough; maybe you wouldn’t be bitten.

It was all getting to be too much. Everything he just said definitely wasn’t helping defuse the bomb, and now he was stuck with a decision to make. Should he protect himself? It’s not like she’d be able to find out who he really was, right? It was the Hopkins in him telling him to run, or maybe the Mariga. It was hard for him to tell which one gave him the need to duck away from reality, “Alright everyone, the shows over. Now get back to work before your boss sees you dicking around.”

It was only a small favor, at least they’d quit staring like this was a soap opera or high school brawl. They had no choice now that he gave an order, but Leo definitely wasn’t going to stick around either. He already felt like he’d sucked up all the oxygen in the room, soon he’d burst into flames and there would be no station left.

“Nice meeting you.” he said automatically before he stalked off toward Ari’s ship. Hopefully this would be the last time he had to spend more than five minutes in the same room as that girl because if this happened every time, he’d likely lose control like the old days.

And just like that, Gem no longer felt weak. Was this guy…peacocking? She huffs out a laugh, more like a guffaw, and looks around to see if anyone else is catching this. This is Grade A comedy right here.

“Oh, yeah? Yeah, are ya just burning up? Wanna tell me who is the most important man in the room?” She’s not even trying to hide the fact that she’s ready to basically destroy his life right now. This is what she lives for. Looking around again, she points to a few other soldiers whose attention she’s caught. “You maybe? How about you?” A couple start grinning until they catch the look on Leo’s face and sober up. That tells her enough, and when she returns her gaze to his she’s sort of impressed.

Sighing, she shrugs as if she gives up. “Alright then, whip it out dude. Show me the proverbial statuesque penis you’re sporting, because I have to understand this.” Now there’s an outbreak of chuckles that the soldiers surrounding them couldn’t conceivably contain. She looks mighty damn pleased with herself. Turqouise eyes shining under the dull light, pouty lips quirked in amusement. She looks like a sprite from a children’s story book.

The realization hit him and his eyes darted around the soldiers. He didn’t want to draw attention to himself, but he had some how mucked that up royally as he did everything in life. Hopefully none of them gave her the impression he was actually important, but they failed him by locking away quickly and he swore he saw one in the back almost salute him. Why did everyone have to be looking at them? Why was everyone amused by the way she was making him feel? The fire inside him hadn’t crept out uncontrolled in a long time, but if he stayed here any longer with all of these eyes on him he might burst.

No matter how strange it looked to anyone around, he had to close his eyes. Leo breathed in through his nose like a dragon setting up to breath fire, but he held the breath in for several moments to calm himself. One. Two. Three. Breathe out. Despite the effort, he couldn’t keep everything under wraps. When he opened his eyes they had shifted from a deep brown to a bright gold color. Why did he let her rile him up so quickly? All he had to do was keep his mouth shut, shrug, and go about his day.

After picking his words carefully he muttered quietly to her only, “I was just minding my own business when you called me out. I wasn’t trying to impress or even talk to you. In fact, I don’t know if I was even looking at you. I apologize for... you know whatever’s gotten over me, but I’m not in the mood for this.”

Leo glanced at his watch as if it would offer him a way out, but he wasn’t due anywhere for another hour. Irritated, he took a step away from her and shoved his other hand through his curls.
