tugging lightly on the red-dyed tip of his hair, you leaned in closer to rengoku, brushing your nose against his cheek gently. rengoku’s laughter was warm, but everything about him seemed to be—the way his body seemed to radiate it in his sleep, the softness in his smile when he looked at you.
“hello, my darling,” his lips ghosted along the tip of your nose, “have you missed me?”
your hand skated along the curves of his face, thumb misplacing his lower lashes as it swept along his under eye. “of course. i find myself missing you as you turn your back to me.”
his smile was something you could have painted, just to try and capture the sunshine of it. to try and keep even a fraction of its beauty just for yourself, safe from the world and from harm.
“don’t be so sad,” he murmured softly, and you closed your eyes to savor the feeling of his breath fanning across your cheek, “for i loathe to see you cry.”
you huffed as you pressed as close to him as humanly possible, “how can i not?”
your hand pushed into the wild mane of his hair, the feeling of it silky, but not quite right. pressing the fine hairs between your thumb and your pointer finger, you could see where your dream started and the reality faded. despite your best efforts to memorize him, to perfect the picture of him you’d created in your memory, there were things time seemed to always chip away at.
“because i fought fearlessly,” the words offered no comfort for the grief settling into your chest, but you didn’t speak a word, afraid of forgetting the meter of his voice, “and my life did not end in vain, my love.”
“my life will not end with yours,” you whispered as the edges of your consciousness attempted to pull you away from your dream, light flooding the edges of the mirage of your lost lover, “but my warmth, my light, that has disappeared. i worry i will not be the same.”
“no matter what,” his voice began to mix with the sounds of laughter, idle chatter of people whose days had already begun, “you are the one i love. the one i thought of as my days came to an end.”
your chest squeezed tightly at the thought.
