The crazy thing about the Flashpoint timeline is that some of the stuff in it would've literally fix like 60% of my problems with Westallen: Barry and Iris were best friends in elementary school, he had a huge crush on her, and in the og timeline that lasts forever and they fall in love, get married, their families are besties, they're never away from each other for a whole day, Up! style romance, yadda yadda, but then Thawne comes in, wrecks a bunch of stuff, Barry's taken away by social services and they lose touch after elementary school, but he never, ever forgets her.

And THEN the show starts when they meet again as adult (maybe he even meets her as the Flash) and he realizes even after all these years she's still the one that got away, he still loves her the same, etc. - except oh no she has a boyfriend and oh no Barry works with him and Joe blahblahblah. No weird pseudo incest vibes, compelling, she's still his first and last and true love or whatever, the obstacles to them getting together right away are still there (boyfriend, she doesn't see Barry like that yet bc she only knew him as a little kid, he can't tell her he's the Flash, etc), and bonus point he's not being as big of a dick when he teams up with Joe to hide that he's the Flash from her for an entire year bc really they only just met again so why should he tell her his biggest secret?

Honestly the writing choices that went into Iris' character were questionable MOST of the time, but never more so than when Barry spent an entire YEAR running himself ragged trying to save her worthless life and then when he went into the Speed Force not only did Little Miss Self-Appointed Team Leader not try once to get him back, she was also mad when CISCO tried. And not for any 'worried about the fate of the world, integrity of the timeline' reasons oh no. Mrs. "We are the Flash, you're nothing without me Barry" over here was still pissed at him for 'leaving her alone' and that was her petty self telling him to stay there and rot

The funniest thing about the "yes, Iris and Barry grew up in the same house and were raised by the same man and he thinks of them both as his kids and vice versa BUT they were best friends BEFORE THAT so it's not weird" is that it completely falls apart the second you take the Flashpoint timeline into account.

If Barry and Iris aren't raised "kinda like brother and sister," Iris doesn't even remember his name.

Pls explain to me how Iris going from telling Eddie "screw destiny, I want to be with you" to her telling Caitlin "well dating is SO hard, and well, the universe wants me with Barry anyway and the Earth-2 version of us seems happy enough so like whatever man, I'm tired" is good and an upgrade and stan-worthy actually

i genuinely do just think it's transparently regressive in a weird turnaround way that the only way the people of this website enjoy a het ship is if the ENTIRE focus is on how awesome and hot and perfect and unstoppable a woman is and how the man is like there to make googly eyes at her and get like nonspecifically dommed-by-implication and we never get ANY thoughts about what she sees in him or what emotional needs are fulfilled for her besides the implication that what every woman wants is someone whos obsessed with her. you people love to find new creative ways to ignore womens interiority

Early S1 Barry is an okay character right up until you get him near Iris, and then he's just the archetype of the 'Nice Guy' who doesn't have the balls to tell his sister-friend that he's in love with her but is still gonna act like a little bitch whenever her boyfriend is around, like the vibes are truly rotten

I hate the trope of "oh we grew up together like siblings, but I have had a crush on you since childhood." Why. It gives me the ick. Also Iris treats Barry so badly in s1, going back and forth on her feelings for him. AND I really liked Iris with her fiance! And they killed him just to get her with Barry :(

To start, they were pretty much raised as siblings (they were literally foster siblings) and Barry sees iris's biological brother as a brother (not just brother in law) Additionally there are a lot of moments where iris just seemed to bull doze over Barry's feelings and kinda ignore what he was going through, they care about each other a lot and most of the scenes could be excusable if she was just a friend, but as his partner she does it way too often Their dynamic as a romantic couple was a lot less enjoyable idk, i just got so pissed at iris all the time and wished they broke up

A qpr for them would've been better

I was so caught up in the euphoria of the idea of a woman and man friend who cuddle in bed together and hold hands on the street that for a moment I lived in a world where this wasn't a mainstream movie from 1961. Also they don't have a romantic relationship in the book

hiiii I'm one of the submitters for Barry and Iris and I wanna add some more

so when Barry would have a reasonable (if potentially unhealthy) reaction to something bad happening Iris would often get unreasonably upset about it and honestly react really poorly

like it's not just "this is not a good way to respond let's work through it and help you figure out how to have a healthier response" it's "that's so terrible of you to have done, why did you do this, I can't believe you'd do something so stupid and bad"

for example, one time Barry sees Iris is going to die in the future so he obsesses over things he can change to prevent it, one detail he notices is she doesn't have an engagement ring, so he proposes, upon learning that it's the reason he proposed I remember her like blowing up and being very upset (I remember being upset at her for it but I admittedly haven't seen it in a while so whatever) and I get being marginally hurt because maybe you see it as your partner not actually wanting to marry you when you just thought they did 2 seconds ago but he was trying to save your life Iris omg

and another time their daughter from the future comes to the present and then eventually it's revealed she worked with Barry's archenemy who killed his mom

now obviously Barry absolutely despised this person (who wouldn't) and feels hurt and betrayed, needing space after such a big betrayal he sends his daughter back to the future

and then Iris gets upset he didn't consult her first... like Iris... he just learned your daughter worked with a man who has traveled time and space trying to kill Barry and who successfully killed his mom and orchestrated a bunch of other bad shit in his life... he didn't even hurt the girl just sent her away, potentially not even forever because you probably still have access to time travel.. why you mad

and again let me touch on the fact that Barry sees every member of Iris's family as his own family, and not through an "in-law" lens.. just as his family

Remember the episode where Barry was nervous to kiss Iris in front of Joe and stumbled over his words saying "Yeah, but he's our… your… he's Joe."

He was going to say OUR DAD. And that was before he and Iris were married so no father-in-law cop-out for the illiterates. Barry and Iris were just dating at the time, so the writers did know how nasty and inappropriate their relationship was, they were probably just getting a kick out of the sweet home Alabama vibe like the Hollywood freaks they are
