‘Tis the season for Christmas In July menu planning!

I’m looking forward to rolling this out. I’m thinking about snow cone men and a “polar bear plunge” iced drink. I’m not sure what it would be made of, I just thought the name was cute.

Santa Claus would be too hot in his coat, wouldn’t he? What would he look like in swim shorts and sunglasses? That is a little scary to think about, actually. Have you seen his beard? I’m scared of what his back would be like. I’ll figure something out soon; something less disturbing.

Fritz’s Confession || Raeger and Fritz

A kiss was all Fritz could really think of to prove Raeger’s love for him and vice versa. Maybe it was a childish thought, but he had always felt that kisses were full of such hidden meanings. A mother’s kiss held warmth and affection usually, for example. A girl’s kiss on the cheek could either be a way of her saying she likes you or a cold rejection to your advances. Whatever the case, Fritz was sure he’d learn something from Raeger’s lips on his. And that’s what he wanted, if Raeger was willing to give it.

“O-on the lips. If that’s okay, I mean!”

Raeger was admittedly a rookie at kissing. He had never even kissed his parents or grandfather very much as a child. His mother and father used to kiss him before bed and before school, but when they divorced, these shows of parental affection all but disappeared, even more so when it was decided his grandfather would prove a better guardian.

He wondered if kissing his boyfriend would be like a new start for displays of affection. He had done intimate practices before in his life, but never like this. It was both exciting and a little scary.

“You sure?” Raeger eased into a comfortable position for a kiss. He decided it would be good to start with something simple, at least until he knew how Fritz liked kisses. Following a deep breath to ease his excited nerves, Raeger went right in for a smooch.

Fritz nodded eagerly. There really were food places all over, even if Raeger did make the best food. It would be okay for him to take more breaks, especially on holidays. At least, that’s what Fritz thought. He just wanted the best for Raeger. He was his best friend, after all. And… well, Fritz liked Raeger. A lot.

He shoved his hands in his pants pockets, grinning widely at the idea of cooking Raeger’s favorite dish for him. Or even with him. “Of course I want to! If it makes you happy, I’d be more than happy to learn how to do it with you. Or for you. Or whatever.” Now Fritz could have a way to make even the tiniest and least important of days special for Raeger, and that sounded pretty awesome to him.

Raeger smiled and led Fritz to the kitchen. It was a little messy, but it was obvious which counters were used to prepare food, since those were spotless for health and sanitary reasons.

“Sorry for the mess, by the way, I can promise I do my best to tidy up most of the time.” Most of the time was maybe an overstatement, but Raeger was a chef, and not a janitor. “I can also assure you everything is up to fire safety code. My grandfather would have been really angry if it wasn’t.” He rummaged through the cabinets to grab all the cooking supplies they would need.

“Hey, Fritz? Could you grab the ingredients on this list, please?” Raeger pulled out a slip of paper with the recipe and its needed materials from one of the drawers. “If the handwriting is hard to read, I put down the page number it’s on in my cookbook. I just keep these papers around for convenience’s sake.”

Frey finds his whole sleepiness amusing. He really must have had little to no sleep. A part of Frey reconsiders eating here and giving the man work in his drowsy state, but since he mentioned why he stayed up, Frey couldn’t find it in her to waste his efforts. “You must be really committed to your work if you’ll sacrifice sleep.” 

And to his offer, Frey of course agrees. “I’d like that special breakfast platter then, please~♫ I wouldn’t want to waste the time you spent studying up on it.” 

Raeger jotted down the order like it was no problem, even though there was no such thing on the menu, or even in his head.

“You got it! One Baccano, I mean, breakfast platter coming up!” He silently prayed the title slip wasn’t recognized by his customer. Anime wasn’t a typical interest for the everyday chef, he presumed, and he was already labeled “weird” for a lot of other reasons already.

A few steps toward the kitchen set off his brain finally registering he was going to be in big trouble if he didn’t think of something fast. Breakfast was such a broad topic, ideas were just flying around in his head while he was still frozen in his tracks.

“Shoot.” He couldn’t help but utter out loud. “This is not good.”

Flowers For My Beloved || Fritz & Raeger

Fritz knew Raeger worked that day, but he was so excited he couldn’t help himself. After picking out a pretty bouquet for his new boyfriend, he headed straight over to his cafe and practically slid in the door, trying to look cool. All composure of cool faded when he saw his cute boyfriend working and he bounded over to him like a puppy, looking rather proud of himself. With a flourish, he presented his bouquet, consisting of red roses, pink peonies, and red tulips.

“For you, Raeger~!” he sing-songed.

Raeger was a little startled by his boyfriend’s sudden appearance at his workplace, but he couldn’t be happier to see him. He was planning to pick up flowers for Fritz after work, but it looked like Fritz was an early bird getting the worm for that one.

“Oh my gosh! Thank you so much, Fritz!” He accepted the bouquet and planted a light kiss on his boyfriend’s cheek. “They’re beautiful!” He looked around for a minute. “Hm, I think there’s a vase perfect for these in the back. You don’t mind if I go grab it for a second, do you?”

Diary Entry || 6/10/17

The shaved ice machine is already broken :(

I tried so hard to keep it in order, but it just doesn’t want to work. I was really looking forward to making treats for this weekend’s beach day in Leuda, but I guess it was just not meant to be. Besides, now that I think about it, I don’t think it would be fair to Leuda’s restaurants if I advertised all day, and shaved ice is already so popular, someone might already want to do it. I’m glad it’s not ice cream, too, or that would be even more of a problem. Having to eat all that leftover ice cream before it goes to waste, all while being lactose intolerant sounds like a bad idea.

Maybe I can make some shaved ice for Fritz, though? I’m sure he would love it! The best part is we can share!

He nodded when asked if being able to set his own schedule was convenient. It was. He could spend his days however he pleased, be it fishing, foraging, playing with his dog and Carl’s cat, or just plain hanging out. It was a nice way to live, and he honestly felt kind of bad for those who couldn’t live life like he did. But everyone had to pay their bills somehow, he realized. Not all could be as free as him. 

Plus, he had also started part-time work at Georgia’s farm. He wasn’t as free as he was before, but that shouldn’t be too big of a problem.

“Yeah, it’s pretty awesome. You’ve got to take care of yourself, though, Raeger. No one’s gonna blame you if you take holidays off.” Still, he wasn’t sure what he’d like to cook. Believe it or not, he’d already memorized how to make mitten crab soup and that was his favorite. Then he had an idea that might get him closer to Raeger. “What’s your favorite thing to eat? We could start with that?”

Fritz’s recommendation of taking care of himself reminded Raeger of his own suggestion to his grandfather when he was young. He could vividly remember begging for the restaurant to close after his grandfather injured his back, a part of his body that had already given him troubles countless times before. It would disappoint his grandfather a lot, Raeger thought, if he were to ignore the advice that left his own mouth.

“I guess you’re right, Fritz.” Raeger hoped he wasn’t getting too lazy in accepting this idea. “After all, there are usually food stalls all over, aren’t there?” First considering time off and now cooking his favorite dish, it almost felt like these activities would be specially reserved for days like Raeger’s birthday, it was maybe even sinful, in the back of his conscience, but it was too hard to resist. “If you really want to, I love sea urchin bowls. They’ve been my favorite since I was a kid, but I only really eat them on special days usually.”

He nodded eagerly when Raeger finally started to understand just what Fritz was trying to say. About time, he thought. But it was better late than never. Not that Fritz really knew how to confess his love to anyone. Raeger was his first love, so he’d never really had the chance to confess to anyone else, even as practice.

“I really do,” he said with a huge grin. He laughed when he heard what the other said next. “You could kiss me?” he suggested.

The suggestion of a kiss was much simpler, and purer, than Raeger expected, but his original hunch was only from years of more intimate first interactions. A kiss was a welcome change in atmosphere, a sure sign this was more serious than his many past flings. That considered, his excitement and slight anxiety made it a little hard to get his body and lips to move without a little nudge, best given as a suggestion of where to kiss.

“That sounds good,” he smiled, “now: cheek or lips?”

Frey slept pretty early the previous night, and of course that meant for an early wake-up call. As early as early can be for a person that usually sleeps in. 9am was definitely much earlier compared to waking up at noon. It felt like such a loss if she were to go back to sleep now and waste a few more hours snoozing, so she decides to start it right away even if today was a rest day for all of her jobs.

She went for a jog at first, not at all minding it would have been a little sunny by now. The only downside of jogging in the heat was that it made her tire easily and soon enough she finds herself slowing down right in front of Konohana Restaurant. Unlike in Leuda, she doesn’t have access to free food from the hotel here in Arcadia. 

“Might as well.” Frey says to herself and fixes up her twin ponytails before entering the place. It was a good thing she brought her wallet. 

“Good morning to you, too. Had a late night?” She greets back at the employee, a small smile present on her face. “I was hoping for some breakfast. Something heavy and kick start my day!”

The speed of being asked about his late night was enough to embarrass Raeger. He wanted to defend himself in the politest way possible, but was interrupted by a yawn coming out of his mouth first.

“I am so sorry,” he apologized, “but yes, I did have a late night.” As for why, he didn’t think a little white lie would hurt. “I spent the night studying up on my,” he paused, the request for breakfast fresh in his mind’s queue, “special breakfast platter. Might I suggest that?”

Beach Party Attire || Closed

Raeger had a secret fondness for sailor patterns, so after seeing this pair of swim shorts, he just had to have them. They squeezed his behind a little, but that was okay for him. He had read somewhere that the style was called something like “thick” but with two c’s, which he didn’t really understand, but as long as he was fitting in with the latest trends, something he knew Leuda was very good at, he was happy.

Maybe, he considered, Fritz might see him. If he did, Raeger couldn’t wait to see the look on his adorable boyfriend’s face; he had to refrain from making any external signs of excitement, since that could interfere with potential restaurant customer considerations, given how embarrassing it might be. For now, though, he had to learn how to keep the shorts from giving him a wedgie.

Diary Entry || 4/29/17

“April showers bring May flowers.”

That’s the saying, right? I think I might have an idea for next month’s menu! I recently ordered some flower-based icing tools, so I’m thinking cakes and pastries. The cream-based treats might be a problem, if I want to ensure the perfect flavor for the season, but I don’t think Fritz would mind taste testing duty for those. I don’t have enough experience with dairy sweets anyway, since they hurt my stomach, so bringing in someone who does sounds like a good idea, in my opinion.

But for now I’m torn when it comes to icing colors: darker greens and rose pink or pastel greens and pinks? Lavender sounds aesthetically pleasing, too, so I should keep note of that.

The Drowsy Chef || Open

Opening up for the day, Raeger was immediately hit with regretting staying up until four in the morning watching the entirety of an anime series he was hardly awake enough to remember the title of. It was something about high school students in their everyday lives, which narrowed it down to just about every high school themed anime available for streaming. The theme song he knew was catchy, since he found himself sleepily humming a tune he vaguely remembered as being from the show.

To call the state he was in “sorry” would be an understatement. He was more sorry for the poor customers who would have to deal with him before the fog would be clearing from his brain at around noon if he was lucky. It was a weekend, so he expected more people to sleep in, and had little concern that a customer would walk in at a time not fit for service.

But to shrug that possibility was a mistake. It was a very big mistake. And he only finally realized that when the first customer of the day walked in.

“Good morning,” his words were a little slurred, punctuated by a yawn “how may I help you?”

Cookin’ By The Book || Georgia & Raeger

[🐎] — At his question, her expression brightens as only one food immediately comes to mind. “Oh, well–” But then another idea pops into her head, and the rancher cuts herself off as stops to consider it. While it would be nice to be able to make fried rice – only her most favorite food in the world – whenever she wanted, making that would be even better… especially when she thought of what sort of expression that silly rival of hers would make when she showcased her awesome new cooking skills to him. “–Curry. Curry would be a good start, I think.”

“’Course, it doesn’t have to be my choice or anythin’.” She adds sheepishly. He may have asked her, but she didn’t want to force anything on the guy, especially when he was already being kind enough to take some time out for her, a strange girl he barely even knew. “We can do whatever works for you!”

Raeger waves his hand briefly. It was no trouble at all cooking someone else’s suggestion. As a chef, he did that all the time.

“Don’t worry about that.” He assured. “Curry sounds like a good idea, too, so I don’t mind. Besides, isn’t it better to cook something you like when starting out? Always good to be interested in what you’re learning, my Grandpa used to say.” Raeger’s grandfather was a source of a lot of Raeger’s views of the culinary arts, but that wasn’t to say he didn’t genuinely believe them. He has some worries he might eventually bother Georgia, or come off insincere from all the times he mentioned his grandfather, but he just bites his tongue and prays he never comes off that way.

“Do you like your curry spicy or with more of a mild taste, by the way? I don’t mind making either, but an outline for the flavor we want can be beneficial.”

“Really?” Fritz asked, eyes wide. 

He would have sworn that Raeger knew everything about cooking. But if he wasn’t even close to his grandfather’s level, then his grandfather must have been a cooking god. Fritz could only imagine how good Raeger’s grandfather’s cooking must have been

He blinked when Raeger asked if he planned his days off, then explained why he was asking. Fritz nodded. 

“Yeah,” he said. “I’ve got whenever off, so just let me know when you’re free.” He’d love to spend more time with the chef anyways.

“Yeah!” Raeger affirmed. “I don’t see why not.”

Raeger envied being self employed a little. Even though he was so by any other name, but he still very closely followed everything from his grandfather’s recipes to his grandfather’s policies to his grandfather’s hours. Very little in running the restaurant was his own, and sometimes he thought of changing that, but he saw no reason to change what has worked so well for as long as he could remember.

“That sounds convenient, is it? I wish I could do that, but I’m lucky if I can close the restaurant for even holidays.” He sighed, then shook his head to not sound too self-pitiful. “So what’s something you’d like to cook, Fritz?”

Fritz smiled awkwardly as he waited for an answer, but what he heard was hardly what he wanted to hear. Raeger had completely misunderstood him.

“N-no, you’ve got it all wrong, Raeger. I don’t just like you’re cooking. I like you. I like the way you smile, the way you talk, the way you’re totally misunderstanding me right now- Well, maybe not that. But I like you. I want to be your boyfriend because I like you, Raeger, the person, not your cooking.”

Wait. That came out a little wrong.

“N-not that I don’t like your cooking. I do. I just like you more.”

Raeger still had trouble wrapping his head around it. The truth was, he had never had a real boyfriend before. The men in his romantic timeline were purely no-strings-attached, much to his disappointment, but there was a mutual understanding that couldn’t really be blamed on anyone but Raeger for not actively searching for the relationship half. He didn’t know the first thing about dating another man, let alone what was and wasn’t a confession, and now he was regretting that knowledge.

“You,” he cleared his throat, “you really feel that way?” Raeger wasn’t sure what to say at that very moment. Saying merely “yes” sounded too informal, and he didn’t want to be so formal it caused discomfort. All he could answer with was: “How do I say ‘yes’?”

Diary Entry || 4/14/17

So. Many. Eggs.

There are too many eggs! I’m regretting my decision to hold a colored egg special this weekend. I still need to paint the bunnies on the sign soon enough for it to dry before Sunday. I’m not a very good painter, though, so maybe I should ask for help.

I’m not sure what kind of bunnies either. Cartoon bunnies or realistic bunnies. I secretly want to go with anime bunnies, but would customers be drawn in by them?

Grandpa, I wish you were here. You knew more about marketing than I ever could.

Cookin’ By The Book || Georgia & Raeger

[🐎] — When it seemed like the guy wouldn’t be too upset with her, Georgia perks back up and crosses her arms across her chest, snowflakes falling from her hair as she nods vigorously. “Mmhm! Darn straight. People had a lot of great things to say about ya when I was asking around.”

Georgia can’t help the delighted gasp that escapes her when he agrees to help her out, and she moves forward to shake both of his hands. “Really?! Thanks so much, you don’t know how much of an honor this is– oh!” She lets go of his hands and laughs sheepishly. 

“Inside voices. Right. And my name, ah… it’s Georgia. Very nice to meet you, um… Raeger, right? Pretty sure that’s what I was told.”

Raeger can’t help but let his mind go straight to the comments he suspected to come from the decent amount of men he had spent time with in the past. He has to get his mind out of that gutter before his face can become red enough for this woman to notice. Cooking-related, he has to remember it was almost surely cooking-related.

When Georgia lets go of his hands, his arms feel a little wobbly and tired from the shaking, but Raeger considers this a flattering gesture of the eagerness to work hard.

“Yes, that’s right. It’s nice to meet you, too, Georgia,” he nods, “I hope I can meet your expectations in teaching you. Is there something specific you have interest in making first?”
