Lux took in the girl walking towards her, a small bounce in her step that reminded her of the cheerleaders in her old highschools, her ponytail swaying side to side with each light bounce. She was pretty, a kind smile etched onto her lips and dimples that gave the defined angles of her face some softness. Lux returned her smile with one of her own, nodding a little as she began to explain. “Great, thanks,” she says, before tilting her head some at her question. She gesture behind herself. “This cabin yeah? Demeter? Yeah, least that’s what my mom told me. You must be… Rae? I’m pretty sure that’s the name the tour guide said.”

“That’d be me!” Rae smiled again, bumping the cabin door open with her hip, “And you’re, Lux?” The two girls looked aesthetically opposite. That was the fun part about camp, all of the different personalities meshing together from their one common parent. Stepping inside, Rae glanced around the forested foyer full of twinkling fairy lights, searching for any sign of the other girl already having moved in. “Did you pick a room yet? Because you can pick whichever one you want, there’s only a couple of us here. Oh, and decorating it is totally up to you, too. It’s super fun, all of our rooms are so different.”

Hazel looks at the smoothie, raising an eyebrows at the color, before shrugging.  “Why not? Hopefully I won’t get poisoned.” She reaches towards Rae, taking the glass and taking a sip.  She pauses for a second, looking down at the glass before nodding and handing it back.  “Right, that one has my complete approval.”

A triumphant smirk graced Rae’s face as Hazel gave her nod of approval. “And, who was it who doubted my skills?” She leans in, as if trying to listen for an answer, “Oh, right, that’d be you.” With a wink she fetched her own cup and poured herself some of the smoothie. “Never doubt my skills, Hazel Mires, I’m queen of everything.”

“That sounds like a good idea.” The idea of new counselors was exciting to them– it meant people were still here. “It could be a chance for us to make sure that they comfortable with the position and we can show them the ropes.”

“Yeah! Considering like, me, you, Brent, and Hazel are the old grannies here.” She laughed. “We’ve been around too long.”

“Ah! That explains it all, I’ll have to try making a few flower crowns.” They listened intently– always somewhat interested in what the other counselors kept up to while not in meetings. Alex always felt that their own life was pretty boring so this was a highlight. “I’ve been okay, just trying to get back into the swing of things.” They nodded. “Yeah. I thought would have one soon, considering how much has changed.”

“Me too,” She nodded, “A bunch of the counselors have been switched around since the last one, so like, half of them haven’t even been to a meeting before. Chiron’s probalby just been too busy getting everything settled again.” Rae placed her hands on her hips, an idea forming. “Maybe we can do like, an unofficial one on our own or something if he keeps forgetting.”

Lux stood outside her cabin, having simply dropped her bags inside the front door before she walked back outside. Her hand came up to run through her icy blue hair while she took in her surroundings, amazed that the forest had given way to all of this. Her heart still felt as though it was pounding out of her chest, the image of the monster in the cop car still fresh in her mind and the worry for her mother still settled in the pit of her stomach. She needed to make sure she was okay. Biting her lip, she stepped forward to the camper walking by, holding up a hand to get their attention. “Hey, um, this might be dumb but I wasn’t really listening to the centaur dude. There’s wifi here right? Mind showing me the best place for it?” She asks, teeth biting at her lower lip as she gave the camper a nervous smile.

Rae had just been informed by Chiron that she was gaining a new member to her cabin, and assumed the blue haired girl hanging out outside was probably her. She was excited, Rae loved getting new siblings, especially now that there were so few of them. She gives a warm smile when the girl calls out to her and happily walks over, her ponytail swishing with each step. “Yeah, it reaches pretty much all over camp, just sometimes it gets a litle iffy in the woods. It’ll totally work just fine from inside the cabin though, I can give you the login stuff.” She pauses, just to be sure, “You are the new girl in my cabin, right?”

She sees Rae narrow her eyes and slowly bites into the honeydew, watching her best friend add the rest of her fruit medley.  “I’ve eaten enough of your cupcakes to know to never even suggest that. I’m just saying pinterest has even let you down.”

“Okay, but like eight times out of ten they don’t fail me. So I’d say that’s a pretty good track record—Hold on, this is gonna be loud for like, a few seconds.” Rae places the lid on the blender and holds it steady before turning it on, pausing her words until the smoothie is done. She smiles, triumphant with herself, before turning to Hazel again. “Wanna try it?”

“I usually avoid running in the forest. I don’t like disturbing the nymphs.” They stretch up a little. “How have you been, Rae? I haven’t seen you in a while.”

“They like when I make them flower crowns, so maybe that’s why they haven’t kicked me out yet.” She chuckled. “But I’ve been good! I don’t know if there’s much to report, just living life, staying busy. What about you?” Pocketing her phone, Rae shrugged, “We haven’t had a counselor meeting in, like, ages, so it feels like I never actually see everyone.”

They exhaled a loud breath as they came to a halt. It might not have been such a good idea to run as much as they had this early in the morning. Alex stretched up towards the sky and wiped sweat off their brow. Brown eyes moved around the field and they waved to another runner. “Great time for a run, wouldn’t you say?”

Rae looked over at Alex, pulling the headphones out of her ear and giving them a smile. “Yeah! I love running in the morning, it’s so peaceful around here. If you can avoid tripping on the tree roots, the woods is also a great place to run.”

Before Rae had a chance to throw it in, Hazel quickly stole a chunk of honeydew.  “Someone’s confident.  Do I need to remind you of the rainbow cake incident of 2014 again?”

“Hey, hey! That was not my fault. The recipe was shitty, my baking skills had nothing to do with it.” She points and Hazel and jokingly squints when she takes some fruit “This shit runs in my blood.”

“Oh please Rae, you’re only like 4 years older than me.”

“Hey, that’s still a lot.” She points, “You are a minor and I’m the adult.”

“Oh, Pinterest…” Vienna took a few steps closer, smiling with a nod as she does so. “I feel like everyone’s always telling me to get one, but I just never do,” She chuckles and looks down at the fruit again. “Maybe one day, though, because this looks seriously so tasty. What all are you putting in it?”

“It’s seriously addicting.” Rae looks down at the fruit as well, “Uh, kiwi, oranges, apples, spinach, and coconut water. I know it sounds gross, but I’m hoping it doesn’t taste gross.” She laughs.

Brent laughs as he pours himself a drink. “I’m sure you could find people who’d be willing to do it. Or just ask Chiron. The gods probably aren’t finished kissing our asses.”

Rae gives a snort of a laugh, piling the fruit into the blender. “True. I think my almost $700 ball dress says that much. I wonder what they’ll do next,” The slight sarcasm in her joking tone is obvious, “Maybe they’ll pay for us to actually go to college and get a real education. Do you think they’ll accept a list of the shit we’ve fought instead of a transcript? Because we’re almost 21 and I’ve only got an 11th grade education.”

She looks over at all the ingredients resting next to her on the counter, nodding her head slowly.  “That would definitely be interesting.  I’m pretty sure I couldn’t even get through half of the last time you had me try one of these things.  Plus you have a great track record with Pinterest so it might actually work.”

[raemccray]

“It’s called fighting through the gross for the sake of being healthy.” She chuckles, beginning to chop up the fruit and tossing it into the blender. “And, I am kind of the Pinterest queen. So I’m expecting it to work flawlessly.”

[brentvales]

“Pintrest? They never let you down,” Brent says jokingly, joining her at the counter with a glass and a carton of orange juice. “And you know, I didn’t think they’d say yes when I asked. But I’m glad I did.”

[raemccray]

“Well, Pinterest is better than those gross protein shakes your brother likes and is probably way better for you.” She shrugs, “I wish I thought of that idea, honestly. But, I at least don’t have a grass floor in my bedroom anymore, so I can’t really complain.”

“I just came for something to drink,” Vienna replied with her usual glee and walked around Rae and to the fridge; opening its door and fetching a bottle of water from one of the shelves. “I went swimming earlier and it’s funny how being in so much water can make you so thirsty,” She prattled on, lightly chuckling, and took a swig after unscrewing the cap. “–What’re you up to?” She asked, trying to peek at what fruit Rae was washing.

“Oh my god, I know, the hot tubs are even worse. I’m glad camp isn’t like, in the middle of a desert or something, we’d all be dehydrated.” She chuckles and looks down at the fruit when Vee asks. “Oh, I’m making a smoothie.” She chirps, “I’m a bit of a Pinterest freak, so when I see something I like, I have to try it.”

Ashton raised her eyebrows. “I’m not allowed to do both?”

“Absoluetly not.” She joked, “You have to respect your elders.”

Vienna strolled into the kitchens, finishing a text message before placing her phone back into her pocket. Looking up, she only took a few more steps and was alerted by a voice; causing her to startle a bit as well. “Hey–” She laughed too. “Sorry for that, that was the last thing I was trying to do.”

“Oh, it’s fine.” She smiles, waving her hand dismissively before moving to the sink and washing off the fruit she has on the counter, “No biggie. What are you up to?”
