WNM Blog #8: Sara reminded me I’m gay
I love women.
I like Sara much more than Cass. I’m probably being too familiar, but they’ll never read this, and thus, who cares? What matters here is my point: Sara Wachter-Boettcher is significantly more pleasing than Cass Sunstein – particularly when it comes to making holistic arguments. I say this because although both are white and – seemingly undeniably – upperclass, Sara manages to really capture the idea of inclusivity in tech, and the democracy that comes with it. A point that Cass Sunstein managed to miss throughout practically the entire book. This isn’t to say I didn’t agree with Sunstein just as much as I agree with Wachter-Boettcher, it’s to say that Sara’s arguments appeal to me even more because her points don’t forget I exist.
WNM BLog #7: Cass makes me frown
I don’t think I like Sunstein too much. I don’t know what it is. Every time I read this book I either feel nothing, or annoyed/angry. Maybe it’s because I often read this book at work where I’m being bombarded by lots of noise literally and figuratively – noise that often sets my nerves alight. It might also be that sometimes Sunstein says things that make me wanna throttle him… Maybe not throttle, just a little bit of stern talking to. Maybe I’m too sensitive and it’s his neutral approach that sets me on edge. I don’t know. Let’s get into this reading, though – unpack a bit (there’s gonna be a lot of hyphens here, I can feel it).
I’m going to pull a quote per chapter, they may or not anger me, or even link to each other; I didn’t plan this blog out ahead of time, so let’s find out together.
WNM Blog #6: e pluribus unum
“From many, one,” one of our country’s many mottos and governmental goals that should shape our societies [translated here from e pluribus unum, obvi] (Sunstein 51).
I’ve got some bones to pick with this motto and the way Sunstein is (and isn’t) portraying American society and government. Most of these bones come from an argument they make indirectly, a lot of our goals and the way the founders viewed things during the early days of the Constitution are outdated – and thus there should be room to make some changes and reach an ideal, potentially entering a direct democracy instead of clinging to republicanism or even finding a middle ground.
WNM Blog #5: Makmende
Makmende. That’s it, that’s the tweet.
WNM Blog #4: it is what it is
“Some people describe these shifts as a crisis in copyright and others a crisis in fair use. Fans defend perceived rights and practices that have been taken for granted for many years, such as the longstanding practice of creating “mix tapes” or other compilations of quoted material. Corporations, on the other hand, want to constrain behaviors they see as damaging and having a much larger impact in the digital era. Both sides accuse the other of exploiting the instability created by shifts in technology and media infrastructure” (Jenkins, Ford, and Green 71).
WNM Blog #3: the digital network gives you power, and y’all know it
I got so caught up in the opening line of chapter 8, I could barely focus. Rainie and Wellman mention that "[a]n old adage has it that you should never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. A new adage would be to never pick a fight with a networked individual with strong internet and mobile connections" (197). And if that ain't the truth, I don't know what is!
WNM Blog #2: Addresses, You’re not serious, are you?
Hi, y’all.
I liked this reading a lot – really I did! But I got to a part in chapter four that threw me four a loop. It threw me so hard I had to read it aloud to my roommates because … WHAT? Let me get specific here: on page 101 of Networked, Kris Thomas gives an anecdote in which he explains that a delivery man gave him and a friend his phone number when asked for his address. The delivery man did not understand why they would want a home address when they had his phone number right there (Rainie and Wellman). To some extent, I get this – we’ll get into that in a second – that’s not what threw me.
WNM Blog #1: and that’s fine
You know that feeling when you know something exists, you just don't know the terminology for it? It's similar to the "the word's on the tip of my tongue!" feeling, but not quite. It's just as frustrating though, when you're actively considering it and your Google searches turn out to be futile (5 pages deep into blog #3 later, the words still don't fit). Well, this week's reading eased one particular instance of my limited vocabulary, and provided me with citations for the next time someone tells me all that technology is why we millenials and Gen-Zers can't communicate.
