Happy 170th Birthday, John HenryĀ āDocā Holliday |Ā He was intelligent, educated, and always a caliber or two above most of the men around him, both with his mind and his six-shooter. (1851-1887)
OH YAY! Iām so glad. Iāve been waiting for an excuse to go into detail about this!
We all know Vessel and II are the composers on the all songs in studio. Basically, Vessel sends demos to II and II completes the songs with percussion. I think āEmergenceā is about just that: how they complete each other musically.
A word about my interpretations: I tend to focus on overall vibes and ideas vs. dissecting every specific word.
So, letās get into it!
Well, you were laid inverse
Living on a promised word
Well, I am the rose you relinquished again
You and I are down headfirst
In another world I heard
I really think this song was composed during the TMBTE era, when Sleep Token was blowing up and it was becoming more and more obvious that they would be able to stand on their own and make a living doing music.
I have a feeling we're close to the end
In another world, Vessel and II might have never met or might be wearing themselves out being session musicians or corporate workers despite āpromisesā that they were talented enough for the big time. But, Vessel now has a feeling theyāre close to the end of struggling, of having to supplement their income with side gigs.
So, come on, come on
Out from underneath, who you were
Come on, come on now
In short: youāre a fucking rockstar, II. Shine the way you were meant to.
You know that it's time to emerge
So go ahead and wrap your arms around me
Wrap your arms around me. Take my support. Lean on me. I will hold you up. Weāre a team.
Are you carbide on my nano, red glass on my lightbulb
These couplets are GOLD. Each one is basically describing two things that āwork better togetherā.
Dark light on my culture, sapphire on my white gold
Nano carbides, for example, are compounds of carbon and metal that are created because their high melting point and durability make them more useful than metals by themselves. Red glass changes the character of a bulbās light, making it unique, so it stands out. Bacterial cultures are most efficiently grown in a darkroom.
II is the carbide on his nano, Vessel says. The dark light on his culture. The thing that helps him grow and become more valuable.
(If this man didnāt study chemistry or biochemistry in some higher academic capacity, I will eat both of my feet.)
Burst out of my chest and hide out in the vents
My blood beats so alive
Keeps the science imagery going with the lenses of a microscope. Heās being studied. But heās not meant to be merely observed. He would leap out and destroy the microscope.
Might bite right through your lens
āBurst out of my chest and hide out in the ventsā is obviously an ALIEN reference because Vessel is a massive nerd, but it is also a powerful image of how someone can understand you so deeply it feels like theyāre in your actual chest, and then they jump out and go somewhere else as a sobering reminder that theyāre a separate person and not just an extension of your own self.
It's midnight in my mind's eye, drowning out the daylight
Godspeed to my enemies who be asking' for that call sign
You know the behaviour, canines of the saviour
Itās always midnight to Vessel because he wants to be making music in a shadow-like time when the real (boring, predictable) world doesnāt exist and it doesnāt matter who he is (vs. the enemies who want to know his ācall signā). āGlory to the legion / trauma for the neighboursā so clearly describes Vessel and IIās early jam sessions when they would play loud music into the wee hours of the morning and drive their neighbors crazy.
Glory to the legion, trauma for the neighbours
I've got solar flares for your dead gods, space dust for your fuel rods
Dark days for your Solstice, dancin' through the depths of
Hellfire, on the winds that started from within
I love the way these second verse has taken the energy from the āyouā (II) and deposited it onto the āIā (Vessel), who is saying he contains the fuel that will light up the spirit II thought may have perished in him (i.e., the desire to become recognized for his own work). My space dust will fuel our spaceship so it will catapult into the stratosphere! My solar flares will light you up the way you deserve! Itās a bunch of nerdy sci-fi metaphors for Vessel expressing his encouragement!
My blood beats so alive, might tear right through my skin
Also, the Summer Solstice is the brightest day of the year. Dark days are the opposite. They balance the light.
I also think itās cool that by this verse, Vessel is over being āstudiedā under a glass microscope like an experiment. Heās ready to become a āreal boyā by bursting out of his own skin!
So, tell me what you meant by living past your half-life
In lockstep with the universe, you're well-versed in the afterlife
You know that I'm sanctified by what's below
Mr. Vessel Token, you canāt sneak that āhalf-lifeā video game reference past me! Interestingly enough, the original Half-Life game was celebrated for immersing players in the mind of the main character instead of just having them āwatchā the action through cut scenes.
No matter what you do, no matter where you go
If anyone is in lock-step with the universe, itās II. I imagine he creates rhythms as he walks. He feels the beat of a bus when he rides it. He taps out rhythms on his thighs when the lights flicker.
And Vessel? Heās sanctified by whatās below. The drums are on the bottom end, often ignored or brushed aside, but not in this partnership. They give him energy, purpose, sanctity.
You might be the one to take away the pain
And let my mind go quiet
And nothing else is quite the same as how I feel when I'm at your side
āYou could be the one to make my mind go quietā¦ā Any creative angst that Vessel might have is assuaged because II understands his creative love language and allows him to put it on metaphorical paper, leaving his mind finally quiet.
And ānothing else is quite the same as how I feel when Iām at your sideā¦ā Theyāre not looking AT each other or facing off, theyāre standing side by side, facing the world TOGETHER, like fighters in arms!
In conclusion: II and his creative process are vital to bringing Sleep Tokenās music into the world. Vessel needs IIās symbiosis, his carbide compound, his encouraging dark light to make his ācultureā (music) and art thrive the way theyāre supposed to.
So, yes. Vessel and II are artistic life partners. They go together. Do not separate.
