Final Week TO Response
The last few classes were very fun and relaxing. After finishing my final project I was very relieved to be able to relax a bit and continue on with class without a large project looming. We had a couple sessions where we acted out the characters that we most wanted to be when we were children and the characters that we didn't want to be. The scenes that we played out for the characters we didn't want to be was actually a bit terrible. I didn't enjoy seeing the characters that people didn't want to be. We also played some games of slow motion race that were intended to allow the person to be aware of their body and their repetitive motor functions. Not only did it do that for me I was also hyper aware of my competitive nature and jealousy of those who could move even slower than me. Some people were innovative by rolling on the ground or taking extra time between steps. It was frustrating that there is reason even to be competitive when the purpose is to be the last one done. It's quite contrary and my frustration won over in the end when I felt as though I was better off losing than being a part of my own frustration any more. I wonder how many people in oppressive situations feel that way. That if they take matters into their own hands it is better than what ever other consequences might befall them at the hands of others.
This will be my last post for this class! I am very sad to be ending my class work with this talented beautiful group of people but I am excited for the semester to be over and to take what I have learned in this class and to apply it in other parts of my life. Hurray Theater of the Oppressed, I hope to be able to practice this theater further and I hope that I can be strong enough to let it become a part of my life no matter what field I end up in. I have grown more in this class than I think I have in the past year all together. I think in an entirely different way about oppression and communication now and that will be with me forever. Thank you Suzanne and all my class mates. Cheers to TO and winter break. :)
