He paused, a moment of consideration clear, before continuing. It was an odd feeling, joy in a place such as this, but then again he was an odd boy!

Holding onto a stuffed rabbit, he swung the ears in every possible direction. They flopped around, occasionally winding back to gently smack against the boy’s paper bag. He only giggled, thoroughly amused by his own antics.

“Lookie.”

he   is   strange ,   isn’t   she  ?   though   she’s   not   exactly   ordinary   herself  ...   and   their   circumstances   are   the   furthest   thing   from   mundane ,   to   put   it   mildly  .   

his   earnest   enthusiasm   for   the   small   rays   of   hope   and   participation   in   childish ,   carefree   antics   when   the   rare   opportunities   arise   is   nothing   short   of   infectious  .   the   ghost   of   a   small ,   sweet   smile   crosses   her   pallid   visage   briefly ,   a   light   huff   of   amusement   rattling   from   her   chest  .   the   duck   quacks   complacently   as   she   squeezes   it  .

“   c’mon  ...   shouldn’t   be   screwing   around  ...   ”   

the   sentiment   is   halfhearted ,   her   grip   on   the   dumb   toy   unrelenting ,   and   the   fond   glint   in   her   eyes   mercifully   hidden   behind   thick ,   choppy   bangs   is   ever   present   in   his   company  .   it’s   kinda   her   fault   anyway ,   right  ?   she   started   it ,   anyway ,   handling   these   old   playthings   all   wistful - like  .   

“   ------   they’re   like   helicopter   blades  .   ”   a   soft   bout   of   snickers   bubble   from   her   lips   as   the   rabbit’s   ears   whirl   around   wildly  .   “   oh ,   hey ,   we   should---   let’s   go   take   their   skeleton   pictures  !   with   the   machine   in   the   other   room  .   it’ll   be   fun  !   ”

familiar   voice   calling   out   tips   her   head   upward   almost   instinctively ,   attention   reluctantly   torn   from   the   duck   toy   clasped   between   her   starved   fingers  ;   hoarse ,   gruff   acknowledgement   is   soon   uttered   thereafter ,   tone   softened   by   fondness   most   unbecoming   of   such   an   inherently   distrustful   girl  ...   “   ---------   psssst ,   hey  !   you   okay  ??   ”

six   is   quite   a   reserved ,   withdrawn   girl   at   the   best   of   times  .   if   she   has   something   to   say   she   says   it   without   hesitation ,   blunt   and   to   the   point  .   but   if   she   doesn’t ,   she’s   simply   quiet  !   you   ask   her   if   she   talks   and   she   looks   you   dead   in   the   eye   and   goes   “   i   have   absolutely   nothing   to   say   to   you  .   ”
