A look back.
A large, easy-to-read cover. Pull out the record, drop the needle—and off we went. The technology may have had its quirks back then, but there was neither a blue screen displaying a 16-digit error code (because the thing didn’t have a screen at all), nor—at least in the technical sense—anything resembling digital rights management. And even during the breaks between tracks, you knew the thing was working—thanks to the crackling and popping.
Student House and Canteen (1960-62) of Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, by Walter Freiwald
This building,
which still looks modern today, with its open and spacious design, embodies what people—at least at that time—envisioned as the open-minded spirit of a university. Both qualities are rather rare to find today.

Monte Baldo near Avio (Lago di Garda North-East).
Here’s another example of how a black-and-white photo can convey a more realistic impression than even the best color shot.
Off-topic: if you’re not hiking or climbing but riding a motorcycle, take the Avio–SP208 to Lago di Pra da Stua and enjoy the little roads in that area. Or do both—no risk, no fun.
This is believed to be the Olivetti "divisumma 18" (1972)
A 4-function calculator (with memory). It is made of ABS plastic with rubber-coated keys. It has no display—but it does have a 12-digit thermal printer (more accurately, an "electro-sensitive printer" for metallized paper). The design, which is still appealing today, is by Mario Bellini and is on display at the Museum of Modern Art. An additional housing component (not shown) can be attached on the left, which serves as a power supply and charges the batteries (4.8 volts).
A fascinating era—the technology and the design.
