they’re having a screaming contest
author:Alantis阿斯
This is the second doujinshi I've worked on with friends recently. This is the cover, but this time it's not related to the Christmas theme; it's actually a sequel.
Finally, happy Soratoday and Christmas everyone!
It's "I'm way too deep into (criticism of) the Chosen One trope" o'clock again and I simply couldn't stop thinking about the whole "Homeostasis scanned Hikari for her inherent potential and, by chance, scanned all the other children that were present at the time as well" scenario. Because I got too deep into character deep-dives for The Amazing Digital Circus and now my babies have to suffer again.
In accordance with the Digimon Adventure 1999 movie, we saw that there were WAY more than just 8 children present and... Considering how these exact 8 were the ones that moved away from Hikarigaoka and to (or around) Odaiba specifically...
How much have their lives been tampered with - without their knowledge?
I mean, we know the kiddos were basically chosen due to their inherent potential - the potential of the most promising traits in their hearts. Some that may already have been prominent - whereas others still had to be nurtured or, more accurately, be put to the test for the sake of growing even stronger.
There's Taichi's sense of pushing forward - handling with good intentions, oftentimes with the safety of his sister in mind, but without taking the circumstances into account, so it may come across as inconsiderate recklessness.
There's Yamato's protectiveness and care - which are also linked to his bond to his brother, but due to familial circumstances, he's not able to put those feelings into words or show them in healthy ways.
There's Sora's sense of taking care of others - while constantly being torn about whether her actions and affections are genuine, fueled by familial circumstances that leave her doubtful of her sense of self.
There's Koushirou's natural curiosity - but due to familial circumstances and insecurities, he buries himself in riddles too much, becoming ignorant of his surroundings (or his own needs/self-preservation) in the process.
There's Mimi being as genuine as she can be - which may make her butt heads with others for having other ideas and views.
There's Jyou's sense of responsibility - that comes with the inherent fear of being inadequate and not living up to expectations.
There's Takeru's childlike sense of wonder - which he has to preserve in the face of familial circumstances, the feeling of inadequacy and constantly having to face losses of varying degrees.
Last but not least there is Hikari's almost otherworldly empathy - one that doesn't just seem to impact her health, but also her sense of self(-preservation and -confidence).
I'm not just referring to how the series tackled the corruption of their respective Crest traits - but how these traits must have been nurtured and focused on by Homeostasis for years and years, so it could have been sure that THESE exact 8 (or rather 7) would end up at Summer Camp (or any other convenient place) to summon them into the Digital World. (I mean, technically, they didn't HAVE to be at the same place at the same time, but the idea that their lives were tampered with so their fates simply HAD to get intertwined, is pretty wild.)
I still maintain that the characters in Digimon are no caricatures - and that each and every one defies their typical tropes at some point of the series. In the end, you can view it from both sides: On one hand, thanks to their personalities, each and every one of them is vital at SOME point of the series, one way or another. But on the other hand - it really HAD to be these traits specifically, coming together in order to form a unity that would lead them to the success Homeostasis hoped for them to have. To bring order and balance.
There's something hopeful yet grim in this idea. Hopeful, because it highlights your best trait and honours you for nurturing it - grim, because you may have been "molded" to fit the criteria to "be useful". And maybe, just maybe, if you hadn't lived up to those external expectations you weren't even aware of, you may not have been chosen in the first place...
This is such an interesting thing.
What if the traits that Homeostasis scanned were the traits that Chosen had, but they were only they traits they were suppose to have when their young. As you grow up you change, not as much as people think, but you do change. What if Homeostasis made it so the Chosen didn't change, that the traits that they had when Homeostasis scanned them were still there when they got to the Digital World because those were the traits they needed.
What if after the Digital World, the Chosen are suppose to change, to grow up and become their own people outside just being a Chosen Child, but they hold onto the traits because it's what saved them. They're scared to let them go, even when maybe they should or at least grow to be more than them, but they can't or at least it takes time and healing because it's those traits are what saved if and what would happen to them if they don't have them? What are they without them? Who are they without them?
This also posses the same question for the 02 Chosen, who must have also been scanned by Homeostasis.
What if Homeostasis only chose them because it saw the others traits in them(courage and friendship for daisuke, love and purity for miyako, knowledge and sincerity for iori), as well as choosing Ken because they needed his Kindness for the new evil that appeared(or should i say old evil that came back again).
What if Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori, were meant to grow into their own people with their own traits, but Homeostasis made it so that they kept the traits of the original eight because they needed those powers again(for some reason) but couldn't get them from Taichi and the others for some reason(taichi and the others being too busy or their powers not strong enough for this new threat). Forcing Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori, to take up the traits of the previous chosen(some of them) because the Digital World needed those traits instead of letting them grow into their own people with their own traits(compassion for daisuke, passion for miyako, and integrity for iori, in my opinion). They do have the others traits in their hearts, but they are not copies of them and are their own people with their own traits in their hearts. Why Homeostasis would do this, I don't know, but I like the idea.
This allows them to save the Digital World, at least for a little, but they have to grow out of those traits and find their own, but because of Homeostasis a part of them will always just be successors to the powers of Courage, Friendship, Love, Purity, Knowledge, and Sincerity, even as they grown into their own people. Even as they find their own traits, break free and find their own promising traits and who they are. It doesn't exactly match the lore given in 02 for why they have the Digimental's, but even after the Digimental's they don't get Crests like the others do. Don't get me wrong, I love Jogress, but Homeostasis doesn't give the kids the traits strongest in their hearts for a reason. Only giving the powers of the ones that came before through the Digimental's, almost like it wants them to continue to use those traits even if it's not the strongest in their hearts.
Could Homeostasis also have pushed the 02 kids together?
Could have Homeostasis made Takeru's mother to want to move, putting him in the same school as Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori as well as closer to all of the others. Could it have made Takeru's mother working so she didn't walk him to school, allowing him to meet Miyako and Iori. Could it have made Miyako and Iori and friends just because they were going to fight on the same team one day. Could have it have made the soccer ball fly towards Takeru so he'd met Daisuke and Daisuke would met him, even if it's just for a second. Could it have put Daisuke and Hikari in the same class so they can see each other again. Could it have even made Daisuke a soccer player, so he and Ken could meet outside of the Digital World? Maybe Homeostasis even have a hand in causing Ken to become the Kaiser(i know very little about tag tamers so if i'm wrong i'm sorry, just ignore that last line). Making them all friends before the Digital World(expect ken) like it made all the others go to the same summer camp and be in the same cabin.
If this is true, it means Homeostasis can really pull the strings with the Chosen Children it picks, in and out of the Digital World. Making sure it has the perfect child soldiers to save both worlds. Toying with lives and changing the Chosen to be exactly what they need, which begs the question if what we see are the true characters or what Homeostasis made them to be. If so, it really shows the power Homeostasis has, but also how it is just a being that only cares about order and balance, not caring about the lives it harms or tampers with in the process. I mean, that is what homeostasis means.
This is really a bittersweet idea though, that nurturing your trait can bring power but your only powerful because of it. I feel like my addition of the 02 kids only makes it sadder, but I just had to add them to this because after reading this they were first thing I thought of because I always think about them.
The idea that Homeostasis only picked the 02 kids(minus ken) because they were like the older kids not because they were own is pretty sad I'm not sure if it makes sense, but I like it
You've used some splendid examples of how the lives of the 02 kids may have been messed with as well - and it's definitely the direction I've been thinking about myself as well!
Without letting this escalate again, the easiest way to influence kids at that stage of their lives would be to mess with their parents and families overall. Of course there is the technical side of things - maybe the rents in Odaiba were magically cheap around 1995, who knows? But then again... People were also forgetting what the events of 1995 had been about in the first place, mainly associating it with a terrorist attack because Gennai and the other agents were ordered to erase all traces. But that also means that memory manipulation might be an actual thing. And I mean... Vamdemon had the power to hypnotize adults and put them into a trance - while Ukkomon had the ability to get people to "like" Rui.
So who tells us that things weren't made "difficult" in order to nurture or challenge the particular Crest traits?
Hikari had been connected with Homeostasis ever since the scanning - so tampering with her health would naturally nurture Taichi's protectiveness, BUT also challenge his ability to be considerate. Feeding him with lots and lots of feelings of guilt once he couldn't protect her, once he may have done something to harm her, causing their parents to lash out at him too (while developing Hikari's codependency at the same time, FUN).
The Takaishida family getting ripped apart purposefully by whatever circumstances to make it harder for Takeru to maintain a hopeful attitude and a healthy relationship with his brother. Who also suffered from a lack of a healthy outlet due to the divorce, thus struggling with other kinds of social bonds.
Something similar can be said about Sora's family - keeping their parents apart, with her father being physically and her mother emotionally unavailable, while the latter may have been paranoid about her daughter's well-being. (Maybe the 1995 events had traumatized Toshiko more than she realized?)
Jyou's father putting unrealistic expectations on ALL his sons, but Jyou in particular, who would develop inferiority complexes by comparing himself too much. (Something similar may also apply to Miyako, growing up among several siblings and potentially feeling neglected and having to be competitive because of it.)
Mimi's parents ACTUALLY CODDLING and SPOILING her to the point of her having a hard time adapting to difficult circumstances and other people's priorities.
The worst possible way to influence children would possibly be the death of a family member - in terms of Osamu's death, we can assume that it wasn't Homeostasis that put Ken through that turmoil, but actually Vamdemon (if I remember correctly)... And Iori and Koushirou may have been spared the fate, because their parents had passed away before 1995 (at least I'm sure that was the case for Iori, but I'd have to check).
Long story short - there are so many potential scenarios to work with here!!!
What I find fascinating about all of this is where it's heading. I believe all of this is a precursor to one final battle- a crossroads to evolution of the human race.
Digimon and human in Harmony and balance bringing out the best of each other to drive out darkness and viral/bad data-
-How we saw it in 02: The Beginning...
...Except Homeostasis's painstaking plans were interfered with.
Homeostasis allowed Menoa Bellucci to preserve the Digidestined as children with their partners. If the children never grew up or just stayed kids Homeostasis would have an endless army.
But Taichi and Yamato and their Digimon stopped her which dealt a painful blow to her plans to increase her army.
Thankfully Homeostasis had a fail safe in place with Ruri and Ukomon. Should Homeostasis's future plans fail she would enact her Endless army plan to turn everyone into a Digidestined.
Homeostasis may have lost most of her original generals so to speak who ran out of potential but if everyone gets a Digimon then Homeostasis will overwhelm the enemy by numbers.
One problem with that...the fail safe, well, failed. Some overpowering darkness will step in because the world has lost its balance and will corrupt everything to itself.
The 02 Digidestined chose to eliminate the endless army before it could even exist thus sabotaging Homeostasis.
If they ever make a final movie it would be great if Homeostasis turned out to be the villain and was treating everyone like an experiment.
Now that the experiment failed Homeostasis will wipe the slate clean by destroying humanity. Perhaps they are unworthy despite the 'gifts' that were given.
And I believe that Takeru and Hikari will have to step in as intercessors because their crests act differently-giving light and life and effective against evil.
We'll see where this goes but I don't think Homeostasis will be treating them with kid gloves. More like she's going to give them verbal trauma.
And maybe even reactivate King Yggdrasil. -whatever the case Homeostasis will have to do something desperate to achieve balance.
Maybe a combined fusion? Perhaps a DNA Digivolution of the Digimon most effective at destroying viral types? And this Digimon can be used as an instrument of judgment.
Oh no, is Digimon going to become Raxephon? Or Evangelion? We really just need a last movie to tie everything together.

"We were all Chosen Children back in the day" [source by mxngy_]
It's a slow weekend so of course I was doom scrolling Toei's Weibo account 🫣
Though I can't read Chinese at all, I did try to use a translator to figure out some posts and what I understood was that Toei is doing some kind of large scale pop-up featuring some of it's popular titles (One Piece, DBZ, Digimon, Girls Band Cry etc) and as part of the store, they're also promoting it by these big LED screen displays
Both Digimon displays used here features art we've already seen, but I love how the first one looks on the big screen.
The Digimon promos for their upcoming stores/exhibitions/merch(?) was also posted on Toei's weibo page in hi-res
Again, art we've already seen but the quality of the image is so good, I had to share.
Most of the merch they're selling in these stores have all appeared in various pop-ups since last year but just one new thing caught my eye which is this new set of chibi plushies
Both the sets are SO CUTE!!
What I personally liked about the 2nd set tho is that Mimi's hair is more pinkish like in her Tri design, and Yamato's big spikes are hidden under the costume so he also resembles his Tri design more 😆
Anyway, I've never seen any of the merch sold in these limited edition pop-ups appear on Aliexpress :( So I doubt I'll ever be able to own these plushies since all other Chinese reseller websites are blocked in my country 😭
