In the 13th century the Livonian Crusade forcefully brought western Christianity to most of the Estonian people. This was not the case for the Seto people whose indigenous land, Setomaa, was located on the territory of the Novgorod Republic. The Seto were able to maintain their native Finnic religion for at least two centuries more, until Eastern Orthodox missionaries began their attempts at converting the locals. The majority of modern Setos now belong to the Russian Orthodox Church, but the remnants of their native faith are still very much alive within their culture and traditional beliefs.
